I'm pretty sure the hybrid is only for the top end model.

It sounds like there is going to be a turbo 4 base model also

This car is built on the z5 platform. MSRP for a new z4 is 49k. Is it really outrageous to think that Toyota offer more tame variant for a little less?

I don't know where you keep pulling the 80k number from. Maybe that's how much they will be after dealer mark ups. Like I said, this is a Toyota not a Lexus.

The RCF starts at 64k.
>>
>>16001980

They're probably FR-S owners that are scared a turbo 4 cylnder supra would render their car line obsolete.

BMW's rwd turbo 4 coupe (230i) msrp is $32k, there's no reason why toyota can't sell a base supra for around that price.

Yeah so do turbos but I've never heard of anyone bitching about adding those on. Plus you can literally put the "heavy" lithium packs in the trunk.

A hybrid powertrain could be the best thing for autosport. We constantly lament turbo lag and trading low end torque for high rev power but with electric power we have the low end solved. If they don't fuck it up this could be awesome.
>>
>>16005239

> buy a fun car

>>16005208

actually you can use the extra weight to balance the car out. The batteries can also be placed very low like in the tesla for lower cog.

And with the electric drivetrain you can also do some interesting torque vectoring stuff to improve handling

Rumor has it, and this seems more likely than some of the shit I'm seeing here, the Supra is going to be around 400 HP and primarily compete with the Corvette. Engine could be fucking anything, probably will have different engine options: I4, I6, V6, Hybrid, who knows. I'd say it would fall in around the $40k to $50k mark for the base car. Trim levels and other shit would obviously jack the price up.

I'd prefer hybrid with a rotary. It's a shame Mazda are being so gutless with the new RX.

Electric for more torque down low in a rotary makes more sense than with an i-6. And i-6 is already so big and heavy.

You already have this long ass i-6 motor AND you're going to put an electric motor behind it? I guess maybe it'll be transaxle with the electric motor in the back, but still.

New Supra sounds like it'll be nice to me. Though I don't know how they're going to make it competitive in the segment if it's a $60k+ car. I'd expect closer to $45k for the base model.
>>
Is it me or does the new Supra seem really tiny? It looks like it might even be smaller than a FR-S
>>
>>16007647
Yep. Looks really small cabin wise, but longer hood. I bet it'll still weigh more than 3200lb, though.
>>
>>16005312
That's not how it works, faggot. The batteries are on the floor and inside all the wheels, this is extremely good for handling
It also has independent all wheel drive with full torque vectoring.

>>
>>16007715
Yeah the Tesla handles okay-ish. It has good CG and other things, but it wasn't made to be a top tier handling car. It was just made to be a "sporty" large sedan.

It needs a stiffer suspension and bigger wheels, but those aren't too hard to fix. The stock wheels are too skinny and made for lower rolling resistance, and can't handle the weight in corners. People do AutoX their Teslas. The problem is that they go into limp-mode REALLY quick.

But hybrid can be the best of both worlds and absurdly good performance, like the P1.

Son, the FT-HS concept car was unveiled back in 2006. People have been speculating that the next Supra would be hybrid ever since you were still in grade school. Even a Toyota exec hinted at it back in 2008:
http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1025004_toyota-exec-says-ft-hs-could-be-supra-of-the-future

..You're way behind the power curve to the tune of some eight years if you thought a hybrid Supra is a new idea, kiddo.

Holy shit how are people so clueless as to how bad car chasis were until basically 2005 when computer aided design could more properly test them?
I thought this was common knowledge for the past 10 years, but some people still don't get it.
Why do you think the ND chassis weighs less than the NA, while having 3 times the stiffness?

I bet the RX-8 chassis at 30,000nm/deg torsional rigidity is three times that of the JZA80, despite weighing far less.
I can't find a cited, reliable number, but I'm hearing it's only 8,000nm/deg for the Supra. Holy shit.
The FD was regarded as one of the best, or the best, chassis of its day. It had 15,000nm/def of stiffneess.

Most modern 4 door sedans have over double the stiffness in their chassis than the Supra does. What is wrong with you?

You're literally better off taking a Corolla, rwd swapping a better engine in it, and fabbing a custom suspension set up than doing anything with a Supra and its shit JZA80 chassis. God damn so many people on /o/ are blinded by nostalgia and have no clue how bad most older cars are.

no one is going to buy a $85-115k toyota
>>
>>16008384
Every single LF-A made sold out before they were even built.

Toyota is damned if they do, damned if they don't.

If they sell them for 45k, and take a loss for brand image or something, they'd still probably only sell about 2,500 per year in the USA, or 7,500 per year world wide.

If they sell them for 85k, they might only sell 500-1000 per year, but at least they'll probably break even on them.

As for more US sales, look at the 4C. It only sold like 600 per year. 3500 Caymans per year. 7,000 370zs. 10,000 Miatas. 1,000 GT-Rs. The one outlier is the Corvette, which sold 33,000 last year.

Think of that. The Miata is a car that's sold 1 million over less than 25 years. Yet they only sell 10,000 per year now days, despite the new one being cheaper and an amazing car.

People just don't buy two seaters anymore.

Its gonna be a V6 turbo Hybrid AWD with 2 electric motors and 4 speed trans + CVT (like the LC500). No stick.

You will stay mad.

467 hp to the Cayman GTS's 340hp and a 0.2s slower 0-60. That's hilarious.

a limited run 10 cylinder supercar that will appreciate in value is not the same as a $100k toyota supra.
>>
>>16007647
Judging by this pic, this cant fit a BMW inline 6 under the hood. The hood slopes down too quickly. It must be the turbo 4 cylinder. But remember this car will probably weight around 1300kg or even less, so it will be enough for sporty driving.
>>
>>16008071
Big car "faces" are the new thing now. Big features (grill, lights) to grab more attention and to make the design more emotive. But I agree I don't like the philosophy behind it, but when you see one in person you do look at it, at least when it's new and rare.
>>
>>16007647
It's slightly bigger than the FRS. Someone has a scaled picture of the two cars.

The dimensions are very similar to the last supra
>>
>>16009370
Uhhh it's like 10 inches longer than the FR-S. 177" long. And more of it is hood. It also is likely angled to one side.

What a stupid conjecture. Like the same people saying the RX-Vision looks like it could fit an I-12 when the hood is only like 24 inches deep and i-4 engines are commonly at least 30 inches tall.

>What is aftermarket chassis re-knitting

You fail to understand that several cunts who have 500 grand supras have gone to this extreme.

For it's time period, it was an amazing chassis. With a ton of money and modern technology they can literally recraft the entire car out of carbon fibre, titanium and graphene.

If you love the car enough, you can bring it into the 21st century. There are some fucking mental cars out there owned by people with a lot of love and deep pockets.
>>
>>16014618
There's actually a guy near me who's supra is like this.

I was passenger in my mate's 800hp car and it just walked us like we were standing still.

The thing appeared to be made of CF, had no paint. God knows how light it was since he's obviously not bound by safety regulations. Most likely under a tonne if he had the entire chassis redone.

And that thing screamed, i know supras make big power but dear god, it was like we were standing still.
>>
>>16010744
Why do you assume the bottom of the engine is mounted above the front axle?

The cross member won't be that high.
>>
>>16014548
It's not that long. It's just very low and looks long. The hood is like 24" tall. Room in the front for oil cooler, radiator, intercooler, pedestrian safety, blah blah. It'll probably be slightly shorter, but it's still going to look long like the FD's looks long because it's not a 5 seat car. It's just a bit longer than the MX-5 hood.
>>
>>16014532
People used to buy them, it's just that fashion left it behind. Point is people will pay a lot for a Toyota badged vehicle.
>>
>>16014618
>>16014624
Or you could do that to a car with a twice as better chassis, like the FD.

Why do you think 90% of the top 3 finishes for the past 10 years in SSM/SM2 are FDs? It's not like you can't get a non-turbo Supra for cheap and do those swaps and modifications within the rules. The rules let you weld the frame better than factory spot welding and so on, just so long as you don't cut it.
350whp 2 rotor FDs destroying 500hp 911s, among other things, and there's 3rotors as well.
The FD is just pretty much the best platform for a 2000lb car. Not your claimed 2000lb 500grand Supra.
>>
>>16014719
Actually, you are talking about motorsport, with regulations.

He is talking about no rules on the street. a 2000lbs monster with shit tons of downforce (the supra has fucktons, it's like a japanese viper, you seen those hips?) for stupid roll races.

The supra excels at that.

I find it believable, people adore supras. The miata only has it's light weight going for it, but virtually no downforce to speak of when you're getting into 1500hp territory. Go watch videos on how stable supras are, it's fucking mind bending. And those are non hardened chassis ones.

One done up with modern tech would be mental.
>>
>>16014719
He is talking about literally replacing the chassis with a CF monocoque like a fucking konegseigg.

Which, while uncommon, does get done to a few old cars and is fucking brutal. Drags them kicking and screaming into the modern era, to destroy nearly anything they come up against.
>>
>>16014719
I was referring to the step above re-welding. Nothing remains of the original car except the shape. Modern materials make it stupid strong, it keeps it's absurd downforce (with small tweaks).

It's the kind of shit only ever done to a car you love, that is dying from rust or one you want to make stupid mental.

SM2 has very lose rules, dude. Engine has to be from the same manufacturer. Has to be over 1978lbs. That's basically it.

Nice job with the bullshit excuses about aero and shit. SM2 allows aero. It allows basically anything except swapping in another manufacturers engine and cutting the chassis. But of course you don't know shit about that since you don't know what you're talking about.

>>16014767
>He is talking about literally replacing the chassis with a CF monocoque like a fucking konegseigg.
Then it's not a JZA80 chassis anymore, dumbass. It's just body panels that resemble an older car on a custom frame.
>>
>>16014795
>Muh miata is better than a supra

I'm not sure if you are actually this fucking retarded. Pour 400k into a supra and it will be far superior to a 800k miata.

You are attacking the original bloke who made a very valid point. The supra's chassis is not shit at all. For it's time period, it was fucking amazing.

Yes, there are better cars now, but a supra can be brought up to par with them (provided enough money).

I'm not actually sure what you're getting at, because everything he said is factually correct.

And no, a miata is not better. It may be light, but it's wheelbase is fucking shit. It was never designed for regular pulls above 300km/h, while the supra happily will sit there on a highway.

The supra is simply a more stable car.

Which has a bit more hp, 350. But damn.

That's pathetic, Lexus.
And the Lexus costs almost twice as much. It cost as much as a GT-R.

It's a real shame because the LC500 has one of the nicest interiors. But it's performance and exterior are terrible.
