This advice is misleading.
Don't redline when it's cold, but ALWAYS redline when it's not.

Also a rotary's mpg doesnt care if you redline or not, it'll be about the same whether your romping it or not

I bought my 05 for $1000 with a blown motor.
$1500 for an entire drivetrain from an 01 camaro. is a ls1 with 243 heads and a small cam and a rebuilt 4l60e and full wiring harness.

I have about $1000 in the other odds and ends right now, kmember, wiring shit, etc. Probably another $500 in nickel/dime crap and it'll be together by spring. $4000-6000 basically I expect and it'll be a nice unique car that handles good and makes good power to have fun with.

Imo rx8 is a great car with a motor made to blow up so we can buy them cheap and put better stuff in.

Didn't really go wrong. They're pretty cheap and sexy as fuck, compared to cars like the BRZ.

As long as you aren't retarded, the special snowflake engine isn't hard to care for.

I think they look good. I love that they're roomy for a "sports car". They have great suspension options.

I'm finishing the swap over this winter. The car I got the swap out of made 422whp. I'm leaving it this way. I'm running the 4l60e until it grenades or I come across a great deal on a t56. It will eventually get the t56 but for all I got for $1500 it was cheap to just use this whole drivetrain since its a built 4l60e with a 4000 stall already.

Otherwise over this summer I've been converting the harness, running wiring for my custom gauges. At the moment I'm finishing up my 8.8" rear. Driveshaft should be finished next week.

I've been working on it off and on since I got the car in Spring.
I've been busy with work and buying my house that it has been a second priority otherwise it could of been done in a month or two. Now that i have my own garage to work in Im sure i'll have the car done and going in December/January.

Engine belonged in a <2700lb car and didn't have much tuning potential to fix that.
Same story as the FR-S. They have a similar power:weight ratio. At least the FR-S engine will take boost even if the rest of the car won't.

You could DD it if you get a 2006+ one, as long as you don't mind the poor gas mileage.

The RX-8s are not unreliable like FDs. "Unreliable" isn't the right word for them. You can rely on the FD for 75k miles per engine rebuild perfectly fine. Even more with mods that improve the engine's lifetime.
With the RX-8, at least if it's a 2006+ model and it got the scheduled oil changes, you can rely on it being perfectly fine for 150k-200k+ miles.

Unreliable means something else.

Also it has amazing handling, albeit on the heavier side.

But its major drawback is that it had effectively the best and worst rotary.
Best because it made amazing power for what it was, and incredibly effecient for being a 2 rotor. No previous rotary could match its power per displacement. It had a much better flow and cycle due to cleverly designed intake and exauhst ports.

But it was also unreliable, believe it or not previous rotaries were a lot more reliable than people give them credit for. This car is the reason rotary memes exist and well are true.(80k rebuilds)

Rx8 is the most reliable rotary apart from old na 12as and 13bs
It will go over 200k with nothing but oil and spark plug changes. The fd is lucky to get past 80k with equal level of maintenance

I'd consider the 2.3 DISI Turbo from the Mazdaspeed instead. Keeping it in the family, Mazda has actually used it in some prototypes contemporary to the RX-8. Also, new Mustang and Focus RS has proven that the 2.3 can take upwards of 300hp reliably.

An FD will get to 125k easily if you premix, or do some reliability mods including water/alch injection.
Still not nearly as good as what an RX-8 gets with just changing oil and spark plugs as adviced to, though.

The mazda dealership here has burned up my clutch, miss-diagnosed broken control arms, completely failed to trouble shoot bad coils, and couldn't tell that my cat had loose parts inside needing replacement when the car went RATTLE RATTLE RATTLE.

Also, Black Halo doesn't make spark plugs, they make coils. They are easily the bust mod for the car without doing serious work. That alone I would have probably bought the car.
