Despite the memes, I don't think it's the MR2. They should handle well to begin with so you would have to push it hard to get out of control anyway.

The real answer is this >>15997303 or something like this >>15997265 A powerful RWD car with borderline track tires will fuck you up really quick if you don't push it just right.

Might buy an AW11, don't want to die just yet. How should you handle it?

Snap oversteer occurs when you overcorrect for lift-off oversteer, right?

Just don't correct too much when you encounter lift-off oversteer, and don't let off the accelerator midway through a turn?

Nope, you have to handle them well, if you hit the gas hard on a corner at low speed then you're in for a spin-out. Toyota had to change the suspension and tyre spec of later second gen MR2s so that they were more """user friendly""". MR-S is the way to go if you don't have experience with MR cars.

Don't let off the accelerator mid turn.

If you do, keep your front tires pointed to where you want to go and let the rear do what it will.

I did this in a parking lot in the rain after getting my aw11. You end up doing a really shitty drift. The goal with any drift is always to have your front tires pointing where you want to go because the rear tires have very little grip. Just get it in a parking lot and get it to snap oversteer so you know how to handle it.

I have an extremely wealthy friend that is a race car driver. His dad owns one of these. About 7 years ago we were all at his mansion in Lake Arrowhead and i got to ride in it as he drove "spiritedly" through the mountains.

Keep in mind me and said friend are both 16 years old. On one turn he came in way too hot and the rear broke loose. He completely lost control but the sticky tires managed to pull us back onto the road at the last second. Holy shit we came so close to flying off the mountain.

The MR2 is significantly worst than the Cayman/Boxster for snap oversteer despite nearly identical weight distributions. It's all the more embarrassing because the MR2 is far less powerful. The MR2 is just a poor example of a mid-engine car.

copy pasta from a google search

The Toyota Tacoma Pikes Peak can hit 60 MPH in 1.6 seconds thanks to a 1,000 HP 2.1-liter engine. But it's only geared to do 132 MPH.

The "truck" was built and driven by New Zealander Rod Millen (Rhys's dad) for the 1998 Pikes Peak Hillclimb. The vehicle has nothing in common with the Tacoma and is, in fact, built on a chrome-molly tubular space frame chassis covered in a carbon fiber body. Power is generated by a 2.1-liter, four-cylinder, turbocharged and intercooled engine pumping out something in the neighborhood of 1,000 HP. It can hit 125 MPH in 4.9 seconds. With this "truck" Millen won the Pikes Peak Unlimited class in both 1998 and 1999.

>>
>>16006278
Probably because their limit is so much higher, you feel like you have infinite grip and then as soon as you go over that limit, *SNAP*. And because their limit is so high, this won't happen at 50 like on a regular tire. It'll happen at 100 and things will suddenly go very very sideways.

To stop being a dickheaded troll and be perfectly honest, I'm not entirely sure. I'm sure there's some sort of reaction taking place (some sort of hydroplaning, for instance, we deal with it a lot in the aviation industry where I work).

I would imagine that because sport/track tires are have such a tremendous amount of grip, that there's no real telltale sign that they're about to break free before it just happens.

In a traditional commuter tire, you tend to hear groaning/squealing and such audio cues, and a definitive difference in handling characteristics before it lets go.

That's my experience, and .02, anyway.
>>
>>15997692

>>
>>16006351

I don't think I can explain it very well within one post so go read and get learned:

http://racingcardynamics.com/racing-tires-lateral-force/

I'll try to TL;DR though.

The answer is that "street" tires reach their grip friction peak at a higher angle of deflection (how hard you are turning & deforming the tire with cornering force) and "race" tires peak at a lower angle of deflection. So, while the race tires have a much higher level of grip friction, they peak & then start to lose their grip during a much less aggressive deflection maneuver than a street tire would.
>>
>>16006415

Crappy troll here. Makes sense; especially given that the contact area decreases when the vehicle performs turns and other maneuvers that take the wheel out of a balanced, straight line.

think of it like a rubber band.

A weaker rubber band will only hold so much force (stretch so far) before it snaps back

A stronger rubber band will hold more force (further stretch) before it snaps back, with more power

So to make race tires lose traction, you gotta be really fuckin slinging it, and if they lose traction, the slide is gonna be that much more dangerous than if you were in normie tires.

It's not really "more sudden", it's that you're going much, much faster when it actually does let go.

This is part of the reason why some people love the FRS/BRZ so much; on those skinny Prius tires made for economy and not grip, you can slide it at 25 mph. Thus, if you spin, you travel 10 yds instead of 2 miles before you come to a stop.
>>
>>16008691
That's not a drift.
All drifting requires is oversteer. My maxima has oversteer, but I only drift for stability while flying down twisty hills. In FWD cars you can always align your wheels straight and accelerate out of a drift/oversteer/understeer situation as long as you have grip to the front wheels. They even do it automatically to an extent which is why they suck for drifting.

It has to do with how tires work, and tread blocks.

Lets talk tires.

First tire compound. People talk about summer tires winter tires etc. It's just a simpleton way to understand what tires you need.

In reality, different temperatures, affect different compounds of tires differently. Winter tires, are designed to be soft and supple in cold weather. All seasons, in semi cold to warm, and summer tires moderate to hot.

Winter tires will grease in hot heat, and you will lose traction. Hot tires will be too hard in cold weather.

Tread design is very complex, but it's designed to be a point that channels water away, and help increase traction on the tread blocks.

Tire width doesn't necessarily increase traction. It just increases the chance that you will gain traction. If you are on a road, and your car puts out X torque, The tire width just increase the chance of find a traction point that can hold X torque.

He's right. Think of what happens on a car with multiple tread patches vs one.

On a car with multiple tread patches, and you're cornering, You'll have traction of the outer tread patch, Then it slips, then it goes to the next inner tread patch, then that slips and goes to the next one. On slicks, when this slipping, and angle deflection happens, there's not multiple tread patches to play backup. once it's gone it's gone, but the grip is phenomenal up to that point.

It's why many performance cars use low profile tires. The less sidewall, the less the tire can create an angle of deflection .

My friend did, up until he flipped off a mustang driver and the driver side swiped him into a ditch breaking several bones.

I hope the same happens to every bikey boy.

>not being able to drive a car with very good balance, handling, and power to suit its potential

Cars don't make great drivers, practice and patience makes great drivers.

I have the Naderdized version and it is pretty good, probably going to SBC or rotary swap it. RR, air-cooled, and turbocharged. Handles pretty well and is rather light for a 60's American car.

I threw my first car off a cliff and split the front end on a tree on the way down.

While listening to Janet Jackson's If.

Because I was A RALLY DRIVER.

To be fair S2k's are prone to snap oversteer. If you don't have good reflexes and know how to correct it you gonna spin son

I refuse to let anybody but the guy who helped me build it drive this thing. It's basically just asking for it.
