Why do we have such shitty trucks? I wonder if I can seize the engine by noon.

I fucking hate truck driving

I don't know how people stay awake for as many hours as they do driving. I start to nod off at the wheel

Seriously. I could call and ask them to bring me a new tractor but it would probably take 2hrs so I'm just gonna drive the thing and see how it goes. I'd rather go back early in a tow truck

I was talking to a recruiter and he said his drivers have a uniform. I was like, whatever, uniform, no big deal. But they also have dress code, and have to stay clean shaven. What the hell? The only reason I got into trucking was for the beard. Is this grooming standard thing common?

Diesels have a lot of oil in them to spare, just check it every other stop or three.

Ex. International vt365 is something like 15 - 16 quarts
>>
>>15992329

The VT365 is just International's version of the Ford 6.0 motor which is a huge pile of shit and isn't even a Class 8 truck motor.

It had oil, but like I mentioned earlier it almost seems watered down instead of the normal thick black. Idk what is habbenin.

These CATs love to blow head gaskets but they normally run kinda rough when that happens and this think seems to run fine aside from the low pressure. I have such a fucked up route today and stuff just keeps going wrong on top of it so I hope this thing blows up within the next hour. With my luck tho, I will be out here til 4pm and then it will die and I will be waiting for a tow until 7pm.

I drove an International school bus with the VT365. Fucking thing couldn't even get out of its own way it was so slow.

Whoever had the idea of putting the VT365 in a MDT chassis should be taken out back and shot.

I thought trucks and bay trailers were assigned to individual routes?

When I worked at Dr Pepper they would always keep the tractors and trailers hooked up unless they were getting serviced.

>run out of hours

>>
>>15992486
I have the same trailer 98% of the time. Sometimes they will get switched around if people are getting back late and the warehouse just starts loading them as soon as they get to the yard.

And each trailer is supposed to have an assigned tractor. Or at least the newer trailers are supposed to go to guys based on seniority and where their route is. But it hasn't been enforced in forever. I kinda want to send an email to HR or something about it, but I would have to do it anonymously because once you start complaining too much they will just find a way to get rid of you.

I'm just checking out for the day at this point. I have had problems at basically every stop so I'm at the point where I can bust my ass and try to get it all done by 4pm, or I can take my time and bring a stop or two back at 4pm. I ain't working hard. Between the computers going out two weeks ago and the hurricane last week, I haven't had a real weekend in 3 weeks and I'm fucking beat.

Your engine is full of diesel. It'll pull all the oil off the bearings and it'll lock up eventually, but not today.

>>15992103
Sleep 10 hours a night.

>>15992328
Usually only for daycab cucks.

>>15992579

>>
>>15992802
It's not a bad idea. Freight is slow January-April for doorswingers, but instruction on snow and ice will get you the experience you need in time for the November-December rush with minimal rookie fuckups.
>>
>>15992870
>full of diesel
How does that happen? Makes sense. I should fill this thing with off-road diesel and see if it turns red.
>>
>>15992870
>>15992974
And why would the oil pressure be so low? Seems like it drops when I hit the brakes and I can get up to 40psi accelerating
>>
>>15993127
Usually an injector issue. Oil analysis will confirm it, don't think you'd be able to see red dye. It'll tase more like diesel, though.

>>15993140
Lower viscosity = lower pressure. It should be around 45-65psi.
>>
I spend way too much on food. Microwave dinners are shit and you gotta make 4 of them just to feel full. What kind of stuff can I buy to cook regular food on the road. Are electric grills good? Want to buy some meat, eggs, etc.

>>

Hazmat, at least like that, is over 1000lbs anyway.

Truckerfag,

Is Michigan a good state to live in for a flatbed driver, in terms of inbound and outbound freight? I know Detroit is, but what about the rest of the state. I've been wanting to move there because of all the /out/ stuff I can do and the low cost of living, but ever since I've been planning on becoming an o/o I've been picky about where to move.

Wew lad. My 5th wheel is freshly rebuilt so it gets bound on newer kingpins, but even them I'm in and out in an hour.

>>15996072
Both bottom corners are great for flatbed O/O's. Your money markets will be Grand Rapids, Chicago, Elkhart, Ft Wayne, Butler, Toledo, and Cleveland. If you want to branch out you've got Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and St Louis for 2 day trips. I moved from southwest Michigan to Toledo, and kind of wish I'd stayed in Michigan, but I'm still doing fine and the snow isn't as bad.

>>
>>15998051
Probably some Type A waste.

No big deal.
>>
>>15998203
Except that container isn't properly secured. Straps are only acceptable if it's empty. If there's anything in the container, it has to be secured with four chains, one at each corner.
>>
>>15998218
Or with twisty locks
>>

Very highly unlikely. The Great Lakes ate the honeypot for spot market freight.

>>15998218

Fucking greenhorns don't know how to knuckle. 2 chains, 2 binders, 2 straps. 4 binders would be direct securement and adds nothing to securement rating over chaining indirect with 2 chains.

They actually changed the injectors out this morning. I should've checked the dip stick though because I'm not sure they changed the oil.

He says injectors have been going bad on a lot of trucks recently and thinks we are getting bad diesel from Port.
>>
>>15997990
yeah there are 2 dispatchers working here. hopefully me and then there is the other guy that works nights. I'd love to switch positions with him
>>
>>15998777
Might be, but you'd have filter and pump issues before injector issues with bad fuel. Sitting for more than a few weeks at a time will wreck O-rings, so long OOS periods might be to blame.

>>15998758

I know in Ontario MTO wants bins secured with min 3 straps empty or 4 chains, and they either go to the top or the bottom holes, no mixing, and zero overhang on whatever your using to move it. They're pretty fucking retarded with bins.
>>
>>16000331
Being an Ontario-fag, I can confirm that they're retarded on a whole of issues.
Ex- the moment you clear the pillbox at the border and enter Ontario, the road/highway begins. Soon after, there's a scale which tickets drivers for not pulling over on the side of the road and changing your status from "on dirty" to "driving" for paper log drivers
>>
>>16000933

Oh boy, if you want retarded look no further then the boys at the MTO. Each and every single officer has their own interpretation of what load securement is. Some get pissy with ratchet binders, some get pissy with break over binders. Some with 2/32 tire life is fine, some think 4/32 is out of service.

And if you really don't want to deal with their bullshit, just wrap a towel around your head and threaten to call your lawyer and sue for discrimination. Seriously.

I can't stand a company where people in the office don't know what the fuck they are doing. I got a new dispatcher a few months ago and he would always blame me for shit that is his fault, booking me on loads after I told him I can't do because of hours, then getting mad when he has to reschedule. I told him to settle his $14/hour ass down and learn how to manage a fucking driver before you get your shit rekt. I record every phone call with the company so try some shit. I wish my old dispatcher didn't leave. Now the company is hiring all these college graduates who got worthless degrees and desperate for a job, and don't know how to manage their own daily schedule yet alone 20-30 drivers.

At this point the aftermarket has put a lot of r&d into addressing the trials and tribulations of it, so finding one that has all of the correct fixes done isn't exactly hard.

Btw international developed it but Ford had it engineered further to their specs.
Aka international motor with ford badging not the other way around.
>>15992426
What does it take to make it a reliable motor?
Pro tip - The metallurgy of the heads is garbage.
>>15992476
The motor uses a variable vane turbo actuated by a solenoid to control boost. Sounds like the vanes are stuck open. That would normally point to a bad solenoid or a turbo in bad need of being inspected, cleaned, and resealed.

Courier delivers important paperwork, delivery driver delivers packages
>>
>>16003297
Basically Express for courior and Ground/Home Delivery for delivery driver. More but smaller packages vs. Less but larger packages. The most important I think you need to ask is whether you'll be working for FedEx or a contracted service provider. Pay and benefits vary because of this.
>>
>>16004032
I was considering courier because delivery drivers typically work 12+ hour days, whereas couriers work a lot less. I was able to speak to a courier on plebbit and he said he usually leaves around 8-8:30AM and is done by noon on most days, but he works for a contractor, not FedEx.

Because of how the new healthcare laws work and CSP's being stingy asshats, the smaller ones would rather hire more part time drivers. Many of the home delivery drivers in my building are actually part time, so look there aswell if that interests you. Note that some contractor's pay per stop and others are salary. Things to consider are how densely populated the area you'd be covering and how far from the station it is. I.e. If you get farm country with 80 stops, you'll be there till 8pm and good luck finding the adresses of those that don't want to be found. Vs. City in the vicinity of the station and 80 stops you'll be done way sooner

As a disclaimer I'm not a driver but serve a couple years as a package handler and you'll learn quite a bit.

I was a courier for about 3 yrs. I enjoyed it but I had a night route that nobody wanted so the bosses were all gone and they knew nobody would take it if I left. I left home about 1230 am and got home around 630-7. They tried to add an addition stop that would have put me out another hr and half for no pay. I refused. I ended up just leaving their deliveries at the warehouse. 3 days of that and boss called me during the day and said I either take the new stop or not show up. Said I wont be there then. Guess who was calling me frantically at 130 am. I guess they went 6 months before they found a replacement driver. Just using subs in the meantime or the boss ran it.

Aww yisss. Sweet organization. I screwed the bottom of the box to the frame as well, so it no longer sags. 3 plates and 12 screws should hold me over until I can get it into the shop to get the corners welded back together. Me? It pretty much goes with most blue collar jobs in the US unless you get in a really good union, but skilled labor isn't appreciated anymore and big companies would rather hire, train, and fire 100 new guys who have no clue what they are doing than pay one competent worker what they are worth.

And the fact that the rest of the economy is so fukt in so many ways that people are willing to live in a truck for next to nothing and undercutting the people trying to earn a real wage. Welcome to the future.
>>
>>16007591
Large turn around?
>>
>>16007622
You me turnover? And yes.

My boss said our location has like 70% turnover for our bay drivers. It's a strange metric, but I think that is measured in a year, so out of every ~40 people hired for this job, about 12 of them will be with the company for a least a year.

He said a lot of locations in the SE are over 100%. So if they have 40 positions for bay drivers, they hire and lose over 40 people per year. And that is fucked up for a $50k/yr job.

That happens everywhere. There aren't more women because while they're better at learning to drive and driving forward than men overall in a semi, they're absolutely abysmal at backing for some reason. Most women you see on the roads are husband/wife teams, and she'll always wake up the husband to park. It's ridiculous how common that arrangement is.

Go OTR and sleep in a truck fot a few years until you either buy your own truck and make good money or get a local gig. Or bust ass at a place like Pepsi for a couple years and sleep in your own bed and eventually move to an easier local job.

See if you can get a grant. Some CDL schools are <$2000 and have payment plans. Mine was flexible. $1900 total, need $500 to put down, and then pay whatever you can whenever as long as you pay it all by the time you get your license. And you work at your own pace so you can get it within a month if you are there 8hrs a day or go a few hours a week and take a year to get it.

Otherwise if you really can't do that, sign a contract and get stuck at a shitty company for a year or two.

Look at Roehl. I didn't get my CDL through them but I know they offer it. I work there and everything is pretty ok except the pay, but for a first job I think it's probably a much better company than swift or c.r. England. I drive regional for them and next year plan on going national then the year after maybe leasing a truck. It isn't perfect by any stretch but so far they haven't fucked me over and I'm not upset about working there. A few other people here work/have worked there, maybe they can tell you more about getting a CDL through them.
>>
>>16013589

I went through my local community college....2 grand up front, 2 grand when I graduated (4k total). My advice is to do the same.

Dont get cucked by the megas. They pay like ass and treat you like one.

If you can, get into a tanker, flatbed, or linehaul division. They get paid more than them lazy dry van steering wheel holders

> Trucker Approached By Armed Man In Parking Lot

> The attempted robbery happened around 3 p.m. in Penn Hills, Pennsylvania. A Werner truck driver was resting in the secluded parking lot of the East Hills Shopping Center in preparation for making a delivery in Harrisburg later that evening.

> The driver said that an armed man approached his truck and attempted to rob him. When the trucker told the would-be robber that he had no money, the man fired a shot through the driver’s side window and then fled the scene.

> The bullet grazed the trucker’s head. He was later taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay.

> Witness Reports Lead To Two Hour SWAT Standoff
Witnesses claimed that they saw the shooter take off toward a nearby neighborhood, so a K-9 unit was called in to investigate. The dog tracked the shooter’s scent to a home on Bracey Drive, in East Hills. Police believed that the suspect had barricaded himself inside the home and called in a SWAT team.

> After a two hour stand off, the SWAT team was able to apprehend two individuals. They were taken to the Penn Hills Police Department for questioning. After speaking with the two individuals, police determined that they had nothing to do with the trucker’s shooting and released them.

> The shooter is described as a black male, 5’6″, with dreadlocks with blond tips wearing all black.

Kind of the response I figured I'd get. I'm 41, worked a union job for the past 11 years as industrial maintenance. I make 29 bucks an hour, almost free bennies, and a shitty pension. I am fucking bored of life. In 5 years my youngest kid will be 19, and my wife and I are free. I just don't know what to do. My job is basically meaningless, at least to me. I work on the same shit my grandfather worked on in the mill. Nothing ever changes. My dream is to escape this mess, make 50k a year, and live in the northern Nevada desert in a fucking trailer, while driving local or regional, or at most, the western states. I wish guys like you and I could switch jobs for a week or two. Yeah, I sit on my nuts most of the day, but when I do get called to do something, it's filthy and dangerous. Even though I'm 22 I look 18 so that's probably the main reason.

oh well I didn't really want it that much anyway.

they probably forgot. i had a manager that would rarely remember to call applicants back even though we were desperately needing drivers.

try finding some private bus companies, I think charter work is way better than school bus routes anyway.

Somehow got a brand new International today. 10k miles on it and drivers already fucked up the steps on the passenget side and the fender on the drivers side.

Depends on the lengths you go to, and the amount of safety.

Being slightly more careful isn't a lot of effort, and can save your life.
The same with basic safety gear. I ran my foot over with a dolly last week, and would have broken toes if my toecaps hadn't stopped it. Killed the boot, though.

Corn silage. They are going to harvest the whole plant stalk and all and then wrap it/cover it to let it ferment. It needs to have a low moisture content for this so they let it dry out.

So I was thinking about trucking.

I "regularly" drive from Connecticut to Iowa and vice versa to and from college. its about 1k miles.

I literally got my license then left and drove 1000 miles the next day.

Last time I did the drive (3 weeks ago) I was able to do it without getting tired or having to stop and rest. Also without wanting to kill myself. I think it was about 18 hours.

Do I have what it takes? Is it worth it?

>>
>>16035974

Aye. I get 15 an hour after the first two hours. So if they detain me 2 hours I sit and pray they detain me the rest of the day. What chaps my ass is when I have a bunch of short runs in a day and each load and unload takes almost exactly two hours of my day. Nigga don't get paid to spend two hours loading, driving 15 miles and spend two hours unloading

Are you crazy?

Denver is booming hard and frieght comes in like mad but not much leaves besides coors

I would have hundreds of lamia babies with Miia any day...

Fucking senior management showed up wednesday and decided that my job was inefficient. So they moved a bunch of other jobs out into my warehouse to put a different one done by complaining women into the well-lit room with heating.
So now I'm working with three guys in what was formerly a nice quiet warehouse, working near-constantly instead of having time to slack off occasionally.
And they've got their own set of speakers, to play shitty rap music on.
And I've lost any privacy for singing along to my music.

On the upside, I now have company and I'm not constantly juggling four jobs because the other guys take care of a couple. Soon as I've trained them, they'll even do it properly.

Also, I have learned never to correct a rapper's grammar. One of the guys IS a rapper on the side when not working retail, but his grammar is awful.
If I hear him massacre the english language again, I'm challenging him to a rap battle, because I can string rhymes together all day.

I drive flatbed and I'm leased on to a company with my own truck. I'm driving mostly 1.80-2.20/mile full truck loads. They don't offer any LTL? What are the typical rates on LTL loads and is the volume there to drive 2000-2500 miles a week or do you sit a lot waiting for loads to set up in the same lane? Is 2500 miles a week at 3/mile minimum realistic?

Thanks
>>
so nearby my house I noticed there's an area where there's always trucks parked. It's off the major highway and in a business park. No businesses right there at the area they park in front of. It's a street, and I see cops go through a lot but never bother them

Anyways is it normal for you guys to just dip out and park somewhere to nap or relax? Does it really matter where you stop?
>>
>>16041165
Looks to me like the cops are treating it as containment. Trucks park somewhere relatively safe, cops buzz through to give a Visible Police Presence to reassure truckers, word gets around that it's a safe place to stop for the night.
>>
>>16041165
Even if it's not technically legal, cops usually don't give a fuck if nobody complains.
Unless you're on the east coast. Everybody hates trucks with a passion and will go far out of their way to harass truck drivers.
>>
>>16041165

Most of the time cops are just glad that they aren't running out of hours or parking in an area that will generate complaints from people.
