Okay /o/, ive made a mistake. I bought a 2000 Mustang fron Craigslist in California. The car runs very well, but will not pass a smog test. Research on the error codes suggest that it's about 1k in parts away from passing.
In California, you cannot transfer a title unless it passes smog. This means i can't even sell the vehicle at this point.(unless i sell it to a junk yard)
I bought the car originally for< 2k so I'm not sure it makes sense to fix the emissions. I should note the car has 156k miles.
What would you do? Pic is not the car but similar.
Spend the 1k and get it passing if it runs nice. Ideally spend more and make it last to 200k!
Don't you have a mechanic 'friend' or a crooked mechanic who will pass it for cash ?
Thats how we do it up here in Canada.

Hrm, I guess 3k is still pretty cheap for 50k miles out of a car...

Sadly no. I've heard that some smog test places will do it for money but i don't want to risk it.

Pic is not mine.
I bought the Mustang because it was the best deal for a manual car and i wanted to practice.
But since i can't register it i really shouldn't be driving it :(

you have 3 options
Spend the 1k to fix it, if you feel like the car is good enough to last to like 200k and like it
go to a crooked mechanic and have him pass it for cash
Sell it to the mexicans, down in Mexico they dont have smog tests so they will buy it, might even pay the 2k for it

Or, move out of Commiefornia into one of 49 other states that don't have nazi tier smog tests

I just moved to seattle.
Washington has smog tests.
I miss the south.

When I was in Texas, they had vehicle inspections.
Had to have working lights, windshield wipers, seatbelts etc- but no emission test.
