Just what is wrong with VW? I've been on /o/ few times, but there is always VW bashing, among Ford vs GM shitflinging.

I'll need an econobox by next year, due to moving and I was looking for hatchbacks, and liked the non-GTI Golf.

So, do they break apart, are expensive to maintain, what makes them shit, compared to other econoboxes?

The alternatives I was contemplating were the mazda3, but looks too long, and weird in the back, and the focus, but I think it goes hand in hand with VW in reliability according to the few threads on /o/ I've seen.

There were serious transmission issues with the last generation Golf. They seem resolved, but the spectre of it still hangs. Also just generally european cars are more sensitive to neglect and require more long term maintenance, ie more than just regular oil changes.

Have had mine for a bit over a year and the 2016 gti is pretty solid. There were blown turbos in the 2015 build dates, but these seem to be resolved. The ea888 motor is damn good.
