Is there any point of running say 245 on the front and 225 in the rear on a track oriented FF setup? I don't understand why you wouldn't just opt for 245 in the rear as well. Bigger is better, right?

Anyway, post track oriented FF's

weight is a factor for a time attack cars

So smaller rear wheels means less weight? Not that much weight I'd think. Maybe 10 lbs?

I've noticed a lot of cars on hot version exhibit a reversed stagger setup as well

Does your dick grow if you drive your FWD car in reverse?

Main reason why they run wider tires up front is to mitigate understeer on ff cars

What if I have a rwd car and a fwd car?

>Bigger is better, right?

Not always, there is a point of diminishing returns. Mainly it comes down to the common misconception of

>Wider tyres = bigger contact patch

Which is not true, according to the laws of physics, of pressure over an area. If the load is the same (same weight, same bar/psi, etc.), the contact patch doesn't increase, just changes shape, in this case wider but shorter, which increases lateral grip, but hurts linear grip.
Also keep in mind wider tyres by themselves increase drag, and potential of tramlining, aquaplaning, etc.

>But wait, there's more

What wider, larger tyres actually do, is handle temperature variations better. Optimal working temperature, next to the compound used, matter way more than width itself, provided of course, the car can strain them enough to reach that temperature. There are quite a few cases, especially in lower classes in racing, where you get better times with narrower tyres, simply because the drivers can't get wider ones to optimal temps.

>tl, dr: width by itself doesn't do much, it's all about temperature and compound

First smart post I have ever read on /o/.

>Smart post

I only have a basic understanding of how things work. It does help though that I prefer to read trackday and physics forums rather than the regular car enthusiast ones. Still, a lot of my thought process comes from logic alone.
For instance the op question, I can't tell the actual reason. I do know however, that front tyres on fwd's are stressed way more than rear ones, so what I know about temperature could be playing a factor there - possibly help reach optimal temp more easily on the rear tyres
