So I got this 2003 subaru legacy 2 months ago and all was fine until today. I was driving like normal when the engine started making a grinding noise. the noise is rev dependant and when I press the gas there is no resonse and then something catches and the noise goes away. Can someone tell me what this means. Thanks for reading

Does it happen if you rev in park or neutral? If it's only when in gear, your have a tranny problem, not an engine problem. That's what it sounds more like to me based on the very limited info you have us.

>he fell for the shitbaru meme

I haven't tried it in neutral yet but I know it happens when it's in drive starting from 0

Auto or standard trans?

I assume it's autotragic. First thing you should do is check your AT fluid. Ever had it flushed?

>flushed
He's looking to fix his car, not destroy it.

Auto
And I changed the engine oil last sunday
>>15989942
Wasn't suggesting it. I was curious because if he had it flushed recently, that could have a lot to do with the problem.
Op, check the tranny fluid level. Even if it's at a good level look to see if it's discolored or smells wrong. It should be red.

Ok I'll check it then
yeah I tested the oils, all of the levels are fine, the engine oil smelld kind of burnt, the tranny oil smelled kind of like fish oil. Also I tried to reverse and it would not go. This pic is the tranny oil

Well, it's supposed to be red.
>>15990078
Well I didn't change it so it must have came like that

I can't really tell from the image, but if it's black, expect transmission damage.
>>15990106
It looks greenish brown to me
>>15990114
Transmission damage for sure.
>>15990075
That's definitely not right. If your engine runs in neutral, then it is 100% transmission damage causing the problem.
>>15990136
Well if that's the case I'm going to see if I could still return it to the dealer

You're fucked. You bought the car as is. Why wouldn't you check the trans fluid and all the others before you bought it?
