1998 Corolla VE. Transmission never gets out of second gear and shifts hard, engine idles roughly but runs smooth when it's going.

Roof cloth is coming down, passenger back seat window handle is broken, both outside handles are broken. Tires were changes as were the battery terminals.

She's still fun as fuck to drive despite all of this.

If I knew how to drive a stick, her tranny issues would be fixed by now. My grandfather had this car since 2000, got the motor replaced during hurricane Katrina so it's sitting at about 75,000. Tranny was never serviced though and the last person I took it to wants 1500 for a rebuild. Might just say fuck it and put fluid in there and hope for the best. Got it back in 2011. Was already 10 years old then.
Pretty fun car to drive (75hp), and very cheap to run (insurance, consumption, parts).

Great for a first car (which was my case), but now I'm really looking forward to the day I'll have the money to get something much more comfy and suited for long distance trips.
It's so noisy on the highway I think I suffer some permanent hear loss because of it.
Also, last time I buy a Renault. Unreliable as fuck.

Yeah, sentra. Mine's an '89, so B12 chassis. Just had to put a new alternator in mine, Autozone gave me one with a pulley that was too small so it shit itself in like a week. Need to do tie rods and CV axles now.

Needed a car for courier work, bought it for $2500 in January, and have put 60,000km on it since then. Just hit 230,000, and it just keeps going. Had to replace pretty much the entire front suspension, steering rack, CV axles, and alternator, all the original parts crapped out just over the 200k mark.

Really gonna miss it when it's time to buy something new.

Handling is debatable - depends on what you're looking for. the 924S has excellent weight distribution, larger brakes, but softer stock suspension. A little lower limits but more forgiving when pushing them IMHO.

I dunno, the FC has perfect 50/50 weight and 4 piston brakes in the front. It's a lot more controllable as a car in general, something akin to the E30 man-machine vibe you get from the car.

Ya, there's that - not sure how the 924's specs stack up. basing that 'outperforms' on me driving the FC and 924 down the same roads - can take off/stop faster, hold more speed in the corners, generally feel more confident in the 924. I'll admit I'm biased in that I'm still driving the 924,but had totaled the FC on one of those roads a few years back.

This 924's got that same vibe, maybe a lil more refined/solid feel to it..? my FC had 160k on the clock, was always wondering if the rotary was going to shell out. Also random elec. issues

Nah was a highway accelerated fairly quick to 180km/h then not so fast to 200km/h and used the rest of the stretch to reach 210km/h before I had to slow down because the road no longer qualified as a highway and had sharp turns coming inn. Best thing is it did not even redline :D so with more road could probably have done 230km/h
It was a very well maintained 306 I, remember so well a glorious evening when this guy in a red 67 mustang pulls up to the side of me on a 4lane road and signals to race, and I won :D Poor guy probably thought I would not stand a chance cause I was a bit slow in the start and he seemed unwilling to go double the speed limit which is what I was doing when I overtook him :P

I've been considering that option, but all the XU engines we have are strapped on our rallycross cars. The 1.6 Tu5JP is also pretty tunable, there are a few 130-170hp ones driving around. Getting the TU5JP4 head on the block is on my list, it's just a hassle with the extra idle roller and water channels needing some lining up.

Nice wonderful cars.
Just look out for the ones with the ABR system as it has a tendency to fail. Can be switched out with a master brake cylinder from a non ABR car, just need some new brake lines. Fairly easy job. This system was only on the Phase 1 cars
Also check for rust the following places
Boot where the inner wheel arch meets the boot floor
Sills specially where they meet the rear wheel arch and on the end of the driver side.
Firewall where it meets the cabin floor on the driver side
Around rear lights
Most of the 405s leak water in around the rear lights due to dried out gaskets. Gaskets can not be bought separately but lights can be bought.
Hope this is of some help for you and happy hunting :)
If there is anything you wonder about just ask and I'll try to answer I've gotten some experience with the 405s now :)
