is that a lada?
>>
>>15983098
I mean if you want to spend $4,000 on a lada, not that hard.
>>
>>15983106
Lada is Vaz. Lada is its international name
>>
Wondering the same. I've got family in Europe so they can easily buy it for me. But how do I ship it to the USA and how do I register it to make it road legal?
>>
>>15983098
you cant, the feds will be up your ass
>>
>>15983172
I think Lada is models 08-099 or something like that, but in the west the name is used on all cars made by VAZ.
>>
>>15985243
YOu can register it if it's older than 25 y.o, right? So just ask them to drive it to port and ship it in a general-purpose container.
>>
Hey this is pretty relevant to my shit.

Grew up in Ukraine, Crimea specifically(now Russia). Now living in freedom land. Great grandpa passed a couple of years ago and left his pea-soup green VAZ 2101 with only a few thousand km's on it behind, the thing is in pristine "survivor" condition. I can get the car for free, it's in storage in Crimea

Anyone know how difficult it is to import from Russia? I assume it can't be more than a grand or two for shipping which really isn't a bad price to have a very cool and unique "classic". I'm going to college right now and living in an apt with no garage, so I'll probably have to wait until I have the means to store it and care for it properly, but it's an idea that's been at the back of my mind for a while. Grandpa who is alive has a pristine Moskvitch and the Soviet copy of the Vespa whatever those were called. He's pretty old too so maybe in a few years I can import myself a nice little USSR collection lol

>>
>>15985873
Fiat sold their designs all over the eastern bloc, from these to the polish FSO.
It had a lot to do with many workers at the time being communists, though we're not sure if it stemed from their pressure or if it was a political move to try and calm them down (it's pretty sure at this point that the Red Brigades for instance recieved more or less direct suggestions of action from Moscow, so giving the USSR what they needed to start producing personnal cars might have eased the tensions between Italy and the soviets)

>Anyone know how difficult it is to import from Russia?

Importing a 25+ year old car from Russia isn't too difficult as long as you can physically go there, although I'd get the car to an EU port for shipping instead of trying to ship it directly from Russia.
However, first you'll need proper documents for the car, and that can be tricky - if it's an almost-never-driven 2101 from Crimea, it's probably got a Soviet type certificate and Ukrainian registration.

>>15986450
interesting, it's funny looking back on it, but where I grew up was more akin to Mediterranean cities than rural shitvillages, it was where wealthy Russians would vacation. But for most of the year when only locals were around it would look like something straight out of 1980's Italy with everyone buzzing around in "Fiat 124's" and "Vespas". Nobody really drove Ladas or anything, mostly 2101's and older Moskvitches. pic related

>>15986653
Yeah I'd definitely pick it up and arrange shipping myself and deliver it to the port or whatever, the issue with licensing is valid to bring up, I wonder how that would go, probably would need the Soviet "title" translated and notarized to prove ownership, can't be too hard to title it in the US after that.

The VAZ has been sitting for a couple of years, but my living grandfather's Moskvitch is started up and driven around weekly and has 8000km on it. I have romantic ideas of road tripping across Europe or some shit in it if I were to pick it up, would be pretty cool unless I died in Eastern Europe. Maybe load up the trunk with spares after doing some preventative maintenance, but if it broke a hammer and some electrician's tape would take care of it.

Getting a classic Soviet car is going to get increasingly difficult as they're falling out of favor here, back when I came in 2005 more than half the road vehicles were still Ladas and shit, but now that the economy is slowly recovering they're actually a rarity, and you only see them from dedicated owners who own show pieces like pic related. Otherwise they'll just be run-down, heavily modded pieces of junk owned by local rednecks.

Loads of people used their Ladas and Moskvichs for trips across the USSR, and mind you that they had zero dealerships/service facilities at the time, private car owners were expected to do all repairs by themselves.

lol that wasn't me that responded, I agree with you for the most part, by no means is a moskvitch a comfortable cruiser, but I've taken enough shitbox roadtrips that I don't really mind

To me it's truly a piece history among the cheapest mass produced "peoples' cars" like the Beetle or 2CV

pic unrelated, it's a Fiat
>>
>>15983098
You'll need to get it repaired eventually, especially if it doesn't pass US safety and emission inspections. Where in the US can you get parts for it?
>>
>>15988499
This is the catch right here. I posted a link earlier to Alpha Cars or whatever, they say they have a parts catalogue but I gaurentee it's going to be very expensive.
I drooled over a vehicle website in the Czech Republic called Mortar Investments for years, they sell lots of Soviet/Warsaw Pact vehicles, even tanks and APC's. They supply parts but it's not going to be cheap getting them into the US.

If you've got money, time, and a garage, it'd be a great project. I watched a series on YouTube of a guy in the US restoring a GAZ-69, he didn't seem to have much trouble working on the engine but I'm pretty sure he had to source his parts from guys in various European countries online. What a headache. He posted a lot on the RussianMilitaryTrucks forum. Unfortunately the fucker deleted his YouTube account some years back and the videos are gone.

Great car just fuckin horrible trying to drive anywhere requiring above city speeds. Just geared wrong. Also parts were hard to come by cause i dont speak dirty slav

There are actually a lot of Russians and Eastern Europeans living near me, and plenty that come to work in the summer. I wonder if I could actually get connections through them or if they'll warn me away from the death Lada.

But imagine, Russian waifu and owning a Lada, life would be great.

Economy in 2005 were much better due to high oil prices plus stagnating protectionism policies were only starting to take their toll. Driving a Russian car was always a sign of being poor though, more and more people tried to get rid of theirs over the years and more and more got decommissioned. You can buy one for a $300 now.

>>
>>15983098
They were sold in Canada, though I doubt many survive today. But if so it shouldn't be hard to import one that way. A neighbor of mine had small Lada dealership for a while in the 90's and always had a couple of these and a Niva around.

From what I remember they really didn't survive all the salt that was used in the winters around here too well.
>>
>>15986405
The us auto industry is dying because they didn't have enough protectionism. Other than the "chicken tax" on light trucks there are no tarrifs or taxes placed on imported cars into the US.
The import laws which stop you from getting that tyte Skyline in the US apply to cars that were never sold in the US market and weren't tested to US emission and safety standards

>The us auto industry is dying because they didn't have enough protectionism.
Protectionism is a road to nowhere, it only hurts the customer (you). As a Russian I'm telling you, buying in a protectionist contry sucks. You can't really do business by importing foreign shit either. The overblown inflation hurts your ability to save up money and we're gonna get progressively more limited in the ability to exchange money for the sake of protectionism. It kind of makes it not worth it to work harder than you need, since you won't be able to buy foreign luxuries unless you get straight up rich. Russia only had legitimately developing economy in the 90s when nothing was forbidden. In the 90s, people were actually able to import JDM cars with no extra taxes. 2000s were carried by oil prices, from 2010 it started stagnating.

haha I just pulled those photos from the internet, they're not of the actual cars. However those are the colors of the actual cars and they're both in perfect shape so might as well be pics of them

I really like the use of the grille surround to square off the large round lights on the Moskvitch, it's interesting how they tried to make the best of the surely limited aesthetic options they had when designing an anti-capitalist car for the people, and those fins tho
