FAQ:
can I fit?
>if you're under ~6'2" (188 cm) and aren't overweight you can fit without modification

can I daily drive one?
>yes most people can daily drive a miata no problem. I have commuted in various miatas for 3 years now

even in the snow?
>yes miatas can drive well in the snow, even better with LSD (with four snow tires)
>>

alright, i'm sold on a Miats. They sound like reliable little cuties that are very fun to drive and not retarded hard to work on when necessary. I just want something I can throw a LSD at and beat to shit on a $5-7k budget.

However, I'm in Canada and I'm concerned about rust raping them, along with a potentially significantly higher cost in general. I've learned a small amount about how/where to look for rust, as well as those shit short nose crankshafts. Any CA bros here care to chime in about buying/owning/loving a Miata? How popular are they in Ontario (or anywhere here) and how many rustbuckets will I have to sift through to find a decent one?
>>
>>15979353

>>
>>15979455
>LSD

so I can do sik skidz into traffic man. I have a DD right now but with how reliable I'm reading these things to be I want to look at converting to a Miata in the future. I wouldn't be burning through a set of tires every weekend or something that intense, but more of a dailydrift type thing.

Admittedly I am unsure about having it for the winter. I would rather not rust it out, depending on how bad that is in Canada. I didn't grow up driving or owning a vehicle in snowy weather so I'm a scrub like that, and am curious about others' experiences with the Miata up here.
>>
>>15979541
I have never lived in Canada but I did daily drive a miata in northern Idaho for one winter.

I had a set of Blizzaks in 175/65R14 and also a torsen differential. I was at stock ride height however I had a GV rep lip aka snow plow. Was a pretty good setup, as long as the snow wasn't too deep.

Miatas handle fantastically in the snow. Easy to kick the tail out and maintain control if you want, but you didn't have to slide. It was good up even steep hills.

I can't really give much input about the rust aspect. I didn't really care if it rusted a little, it was a rebuilt-title shitbox. But I'm sure if you spray down the undercarriage once or twice a week you should be ok.

How much do you have to spend on the swap?

If I were to do a swap I'd probably do either a J35 or K24.
>>
>>15981810
thats interesting, theres a shop near me that specialises in swapping these cuck engines, are they actually any good beside being able to rev them really high?
>>15981820
what type of LS fits and wouldnt it make the car imbalanced? rest of the engines dont really have that much documentation about swapping
>>
>>15981831
LS swap is a massive undertaking, it requires a different transmission, differential, drive shaft, half shafts, etc.

K20/24 and J35 swaps utilize the original transmission and drive line
>>
>>15981848
Yeah i figured the LS would be more difficult.

Didnt know those 2 actually used the same transmission, good to know
>>
>>15981831
>thats interesting, theres a shop near me that specialises in swapping these cuck engines, are they actually any good beside being able to rev them really high?

well, let's see
>reliable for DD
>relatively cheap to swap
>~200hp stock which is already enough with potential for more
>can use original miata gearbox
>fits nicely
>despite being designed for transverse configuration it works longitudinal no problemo
>better than s2000 F20

>>
>>15982152
Why would you? The benefit of the K swap is that it uses the Miata transmission, and the K24 will make more power NA than the Miata 6MT will handle.
>>
>>15981824
>>15981848
J35 swap lowers the steering rack by 3/4", which causes massive bump steer issues in a car that's already susceptible to bump steer when lowered even slightly. Also, the oil pan is the lowest part of the car, which means you're going to have a bad day if you ever bottom out.

I was considering Tein, but them I went with Meister R and I'm very happy with them. They offer softer springs than most, let's you adjust height without preload, can ride with better comfort than stock Bilsteins on soft settings and try to find a single bad comment about them on the internet.
>>
>>15983340
I'm almost certain if you look through the thread people have already answered this but it just really comes down to torso length vs leg length. I myself also am about 6'1 and 195lbs. I FIT, but it's not comfortable in a stock setup. The stock steering wheel is too big and my knees constantly hit it. I have maybe 1-1.5 inches of headroom. It looks a little clausrophobic in a hard top NA but it's doable.

>>15987038
Zeta-S. From what I understand the ZetaCRD is just a upgraded version. If the spring rates are the same it's 6kg front and 5kg rear. Zeta-R, now called ZetaCRD+ had 10kg front and 6kg rear, also it doesn't have rubber top mounts in the front so they are probably a lot less street oriented.
The adjustable rebound range is very wide, so they are super comfy at the softest setting, much better than the stock Bilsteins that have way too much rebound.

I also have stiffer swaybars on mine. Went with H&R as they were easier to buy here in europoor. Really ruins ride comfort but makes the car way more planted and responsive. I'm kind of split on the question, sometimes I want my car to feel like a real racer and others I want it to be comfortable. Try running without swaybars before installing the new ones, it's a pretty nice experience.

quick /mg/ only a few hours left
http://www.ebay.com/itm/201684542845?item=201684542845&viewitem=&vxp=mtr

i need a replacement trunk (current one has a dent in the back preventing it from fully sealing) and this one's paint is in excellent shape aside from the paint accent, no rust either

i'm not a fan of the accent but it wouldn't look too bad on an NB i think

i'm going to be getting a fastback hardtop eventually anyway.

should i cop it? i won't be paying any more than like $125 or $150

fucking black NB trunks are so hard to find for some reason

ok nevermind, just did some online shipping quotes and them some big fuckin' numbers
assuming its a package about 45" by 40" by 8" and weighs 30 pounds, going from Missouri to Massachusetts

usps wants $120
ups wants $200
greyound wants $70 but there isn't a greyhound terminal within 50 miles of the guy

i really have no idea from what hole he pulled a $12 shipping estimate

a friend gave me a lift in his TF when I owned a NB. our cars were about the same age, same color, both 1.8s. when i got in i thought "wow this is nice" with his leather seats and CD player while I had to make do with cloth seats and a tapedeck in my miats, despite it costing twice as much as the MG.

halfway home, the tire blew out and left us stranded in the rain trying to work out how to get the spare out of the frunk. it just wouldn't come off, and i ended up taking the bus the rest of the way home. my friend later said he had to call out an emergency tire repair guy who had to use a sledgehammer to get the wheel out as the whole thing had corroded to the chassis.

there's a reason why TFs are dirt cheap compared to the equivalent miats despite being better spec'd. MG - never again

Sure the build quality was sketchy but you've got to give credit to a 10+ year old car with a 20+ year old engine that can still outpace a brand new car with a (bigger) modern engine.

I thought about gold, but I kind of have mixed feelings about gold wheels on red cars. I like white, but I feel like they would be a pain in the ass to keep clean. That's why I'm leaning towards the current color, or a few shades darker. Either way, I still want to keep the glitter that they have in them though.

Looking to do a full header back exhaust on my '01 NB. Limit of 1k, don't need them all the match brands, so headers can be different from cat/midpipe and the rest of the exhaust. Only rule is I still need a cat because I have to pass emissions.
>>
>>16001585
If it were me I'd probably get the racing beat full exhaust, headers and all. I wouldn't expect any huge gains from any exhaust, but at least racing beat has dyno proven results and lots of r&d behind their products. I wouldn't expect more than a 10 hp gain tho. Imo there are better ways to increase the performance of a miata for 1k

Got GS frame rails at Miata at Mazda Raceway for cheaper than original price+shipping.

Flying Miata does have a better hardware kit, instructions, and the provisions for upgrading to butterfly brace. It was more expensive when I was buying though.

I don't know if I'll ever go with the butterfly brace though, new frame rails alone improve the stiffness significantly.

Only problem so far is a bit of a 'clacking' noise when accelerating in 1st or second at low speeds. Anyone have any suggestions of what to check? I also notice some movement in the shifter when accelerating so I was thinking maybe the trans mount is loose/ worn out.

Soooo i've got a question

I've got a nb8a
People have said the nb8b is better overall
But i've been looking at statistics from both and apparently the nb8a can reach 100km/h in .4 less of a second than the 8b

Also, fuel econemy seems slightly better in the nb8a and i've also been told if you plan to go forced induction the nb8a is better in most cases

My NB 6 speed is probably the hardest stock car I've ever driven. The ND is much easier to drive. The clutch is lighter and does not judder and the stick is more slick.
>>16010269
I would go for the Yokohama AD08R 205/45R16
>>16010411
Either the numbers are shit or it's because that you have to shift one more time to hit 100kmh. I think the gearing is too wide on the 6 speed, can't imagine how slow a 5 speed must feel.
>>
>>16010475
Personally, although i wouldn't say im all that experienced, the 5 speed shift isn't slow at all.
I can hit 100km/h just before shifting into third and third gear can easily take me to 140-150 with a bit of zip

Usually i drive in 5th gear wherever possible to save fuel but the 5 speed makes it easy to knock back a gear or two if i wanna speed up

actually yeah clutch shudder getting into first is an annoying common issue with the 6 speeds. It's almost always fixed by some kind of aftermarket clutch and flywheel, the flyin miata happy meal is a must

>>16010729
already rev matching but i need to slow then do the rev match then continue slowing, not quite able to do it all in one motion

flying miata sells a little accelerator pedal widening extension thing that makes it way easier
>>
>>16010759
Oh you don't need that extension man

Just practice and git good. Try rev matching with your right foot barely on the brake, and focus on applying steady brake pressure as you kick the gas with your heel/side of foot. Remember to let the clutch out at just the right time for a smooth shift
>>
>>16010816
but muh big feet :(
i find it much more comfortable to roll right with the end of your foot sort of half off the brake
>>
>>16010727
I want to swap in a 4.78 final drive for my 6speed so there's always a gear that's in the high revs. So boring now when I exit a roundabout in 2nd at about 3-4k rpm and there's no power to be found. A shorter final gear would keep me in the power band and give more torque.
>>16010759
I went with a cheaper and lighter setup. I bought ilmotorsports 1.6 lightweight flywheel and their uprated 1.6 clutch. Will be installing in during the winter and I expect to shave quite a lot of weight. The flywheel is less than 9lbs and the clutch is smaller so it has both less material and inertia. Will be interesting.
>>
>>16010862
I get sad just reading about that
On some round abouts i get to slip back into 1st gear for a quicker boost and usually i'm in the 4-5rpm range in 2nd gear if 1st isnt an option

The whole drive line is mounted only with the engine bushings and differential bushings. Stock engine bushings are so soft that the whole drive train will roll when you push the gas hard. And it's not impossible that yours are worn or broken either. Consider buying stiffer ones.

Someone is parting out this Miata, and I want to buy the rear bumper cover off it. Does it look like it's just bad oxidation on the back? If it is, is that something that can be brought back to life with some cutting compound and polish?

Is $3750 too much for a 91 Miata with a hardtop and 180k miles? I understand the hardtop is pretty valuable but its a grand more than the soft top ones for sale. I'm sure since I'm late to the party I can't pick up a dirt cheap NA anymore.

Why would you spend the same money, energy and effort swapping a DOHC V6 in instead of a V8 that is lighter, more compact, more powerful and doesn't sacrifice weight distribution?

God, all that heavy casting right underneath the hood makes me cringe.

Why would you swap in a K24 when you can make more power by turbocharging the stock motor like it's designed for?

Ugh.
>>
>>15983340
I'm 6'2", 220 and I daily drove one for 3 years. I had a short commute to work and mostly sprinted around town in it day to day. I took long trips in my winter beater.

I have shorter legs for my height though. Extra lumbar vertebra. Only way to know is to drive one, but be careful, you're likely to buy the first one you test drive.
>>
>>16014234
You can buy a crate K24 that will make over 220whp for about the same money as a turbo kit. The k24 is lighter than the stock engine, turbokit will add weight. And some just prefer NA over turbo.
>>
>>16014272
A decent turbo kit yields 250whp and actual torque instead of VTEC hopes and dreams through a gearbox not at all designed for the K24's powerband.

I still don't understand. Weight savings I get, but you're still not seeing tangible performance gains for your investment.
>>
>>16014272
You act like K swaps are cheap lol

This is without them motor
>>
>>16014390
Are you retarded? If you want to push 250 whp on a stock motor you're gonna blow it pretty fucking fast. If you want to get past 220 you need to go for lower compression forged pistons and rods, so count in a full rebuild on the cost of that turbo kit there mate.
>>
>>16013153

Hey guys, need advice. I have a 1999 1.8 nb with a 5-speed, open diff and 4.3 final drive. I am considering buying a lsd from a 2000 nb with a 6-speed. Ideally i would get the 6-speed as well, but the seller needs it himself. That would leave me with a 3,9 final drive combined with a 5-speed which would bottom out 2nd gear at 64 mph. Will that kill the quick responsiveness of the car, or is it worth it to be able to go fully hectic this winter? The guy said the diff is from a former track car with 400 000km (!) but he is gonna open it up and send me pics of it. Will the diff live, or do you think it has been abused to hell and back. What do you think, all things considered? Or could i swap out the final drive between the two diffs?

250 is doable on a stock 1.8 motor if you have good cooling and use e85. Hell, thecarpassionchannel made 276 whp out of a 1.6 without grenading it, and ran it at about 250 hp for thousands of miles
>>
>>16013058

>>
>>16016263
>shop
With the money you spend at a shop you could buy the parts and tools to do it yourself and still probably save money, then you also have tools to do everything you'd need to do in the future.
>>
>>16016705
top of the bumper is easy as fuck with a rotary buffer, sides are hard because it's more work to apply force sideways rather than straight down
>>
do you HAVE to use the 6 speed in order to do 250whp?

>>16016712
