Looking to buy a project for my little brother and I to work on and found this 1965 Volkswagen beetle that is being sold by the original owner with minor surface rust and comes well documented. It is ~95% original and the interior needs work.

it also comes with 5 engines that are not in the car.

"There are 2 1600cc, one long, and one short block. There are also 2 complete engines, one 12-volt 1200cc motor, and one modified with Porsche pistons. The original motor, which came with the care is partially restored"

He's asking $1500. Is this a good place to start?
>>
>>15970926
Totally.
Bugs are a good first project because they're simple.
Takes like 4 bolts, a floor jack and 5 minutes to drop the engine.

Save those blocks, magnesium fires in the dunes will make you cool.
>>
>>15970926
My older brother learned on a 72 super beetle our dad got him, and now he is very mechanically inclined, so yeah, go for it

>tfw never allowed to work on it and now struggle with anything harder than basic maintenance on my car ;_;
>>
>>15970963
>>15970972
awesome to hear. Ive never had a project car and I figured I could learn something from this as well.

Im assuming parts are fairly easy to find since a shit ton of these were made?
>>
>>15971012
Absolutely. Huge support network on forums, well written service books, really the easiest car to work on. He was dropping engines at like 14 years old.

However, if there is bad floor pan and heater channel rust, just know that the car can never be restored to full original condition.
His had to be scrapped because it just wasn't safe to drive from rust in those places.
>>
>>15971063
ok sounds good. Im currently talking with a friend and he's trying to talk me out of getting it. "good luck with finding parts"

Im like dude they made a shit ton of these plus we have something called the internet.
>>
>>15971167
They continued to make them in mexico until like 2003.
Aftermarket support is as good as mustangs or Chevy small blocks.

Thanks. I just called the seller and left a message. Hopefully he gets back to me soon.

Reall yhte only things to look out for, unless you have basic welding exp, is rust under the battery, heater channels, any damage to the front or rear apron and the floor pans. Tho, honestly, all of that sheetmetal is readily available, dirt cheap and easy to replace. I'd hoist the body off the pan and start going thru it from front to back. Very rewarding.

air cooled VW fag here. That's a screaming deal. The engines alone are worth over 1k, and a 1 owner 65 is damn rare. Run over there now with $1500 cash in hand because youre not going to find a better deal than that. If I were selling that I would be asking at least $3k.
>>
>>15977920
thats a 356 twin spark motor. It's worth more than the bug it's in, even if it is immaculately restored. Personally I would never throw a motor that costs tens of thousands of dollars and makes less than 100bhp into a bug when you could build a nasty 400hp turbo efi motor for a lot less, but some people are into that vintage speed stuff.

your reports of engines being expensive are only true when rebuilt.
for example this shit one with frozen rings was $120 on my local cl and it took months to sell
>>
>>15970926

Yes, jump on this.
>>
>>15977898
You have a porsche. The other pic you posted is of the Massive Type 4 (Jake Raby shop) conversion fan kit. Its high quality stuff but totally unnecessary.

The factory fan shroud is more than adequate and cooling the engine.
>>
>>15981954
can you simply use a porsche shroud on a type 1
mine has the doghouse
>>
>>15977750
1968 and later.

The IRS rear is a HUGE step up from swing axle in terms of wheel travel, handling and aftermarket availability. The only downside is all the front ends are going to be ball joint. Which isn't that bad. Tons of people think its horrible and want to convert to link pin fronts for "Muh wheel travel" but in reality, with some good lift spindles, leaf spring adjusters and some bilstein 5100's you can have a kick ass 8"-10" wheel travel front end that still feels good on the highway at 60mph.

Ok, so those look like later model engines.
And by later i mean not 36/40 horse engines. 1300cc and 1600cc engines.

From the looks of it you could assemble a decent engine out of that pile. Given the cases aren't trash.

Look at the case numbers on the bottom near the oil pan, fingers crossed they say AS41 and or AS21 on them. Both of those cases are factory cases that you can use for decent power builds. The AS21 is typically a fuel injection case thats more aluminum than magnesium. They're rare though. The more common case is the AS41, its the general factory upgraded case.

Also take a peek at those distributors, get the numbers off of them. You want to keep the SVDA, single vacuum dual advance distributors. Stay away from the Bosch 009 trash mechanical distributors.
>>
>>15981980
I've had 4 and 5 lug cars, Besides looking better and having a stronger bolt circle, there's no real advantage.

I've done some hard shit with 4 lugs and never broken anything. Hell i had some 4-5 lug adapters once and they never let loose. I however do not suggest that.

I'm not sure what you're getting at, 4 lug and 5 lug are not suspension specific, you can have a 5 lug swing axle and a 5 lug IRS, and you can have 4 lug IRS and 4 lug swing axle.

In some ways yes, in others no.

In stock form swing axle is considerably stronger than IRS, its also lighter.

So take it as it is.

you will NEVER get 8-10" of wheel travel out of a BJ front end. I have build a class 11 front beam, you are looking at 5 3/4" of wheel travel, 6" if you notch the ball joints for high clearance. This is not to say BJ is garbage offroad, but it's certainly not as good as link pin, which can get about 8" of travel before you get into issues with tierod hitting the trans tunnel and over-twisting the torsion leaves. You can get 9" of travel out of stock arms with panhead clearancing and coilovers but most people are onto longer arms by then. you can take a LP beam and hack it up to fit a BJ panhead and youll actually end up with better caster through the suspension travel. i have a beam set up like this but Its just sitting around because i have a '56 and my '70 is going the route of being a SCORE/SNORE tagged class 11.

pic related is my BJ with bump/droop hook stops. These are set up so that it contacts the hook stops when the BJ is physically maxed out of travel, and it still only pulls 5 3/4" wheel travel.
>>
>>15982053
If youre interested in offroad beetle suspension info you should check out thesamba, shoptalkforums, and class11coalition. class11coalition is where actual racers reside, but its slow as hell and its for class 11 so theres no long travel discussion. but easily a far more knowledgeable base than any other VW forum on the internet since they are all diehard racers, some have been racing for 40 years.
>>
>>15982048
Different engine entirely. They share NO parts whatsoever.
>>
>>15982053
Maybe its been too long but when i was prepping a class 9 with a friend circa 2005 we were able to get a lot more than 5 3/4" from that ball joint front end.

Perhaps we're measuring differently, spindle center droop to spindle center compression right?
