You know what a rear window is and you know what a trunklid is, right? If the trunklid opens beneath the rear window, it's not a hatchback. If the rear window opens alongside the trunklid to form a large opening, it's a hatchback.

Also the characteristic name regarding the hatch refers to the upwards hinged nature of the trunklid. When it's side hinged it's more usually referred to as a cargo door.

Also regardless of the opening mechanism of its trunklid a car can still be classified otherwise than as a hatchback, for example as a station wagon, crossover or SUV. When the term hatchback is explicitly used, it usually refers to compact cars or small crossovers with such a hatchback feature.
