for some reason I've been following Global rally cross for the last 2 years and these fuckin beetles have been dominating the races. I've always had a disdain for the production models, but the racing models have really made a lot of sense. It has near perfect weight distribution and it's aerodynamic on all ends and from what i've seen from the engine bay it looks manageable to work on.

They're dumb nostalgia pieces. My grandmother had one for a little while. They have a stupid long dashboard so they can shoehorn the engine in the front and they're really cramped.

The new one is pretty nice. I would like a convertible one.

They're fucking huge for what's supposed to be a zippy two door. Current gen is 4,28m long and weighs 3000-3300 lbs.

The "New Beetle" (1998-2011 I think) is/was complete garbage. Slow, heavy, really fucking awkward to sit in with a fuckhuge dash, prone to fires... girly. Terrible, terrible car. And I say this as someone who generally likes VW.

Also that "cyber green" they offered is one of the worst paint colors ever, not just because it's an ugly color, but because sun exposure fades it (unevenly) to an even worse puke green.

2012+ Beetle is fine, it's just a rebodied Golf. Looks improved a lot also, IMO. Still not much reason to get it over the Golf though, you're basically paying more for less interior room.

The newest Beetles actually look like proper Hitlermobiles again now that they've got a fully sloped back end, but the engine is still in the wrong side.

My step mom had the 20v 180hp turbo one when they first came out in like 2001. It was okay. I learned stick on it.

Interior plastic is indeed almost biodegradable, every hinged thing will fuck itself. But I put decent miles on my TDI and it stays fun everyday. Used to hate the styling of the NBs growing up but it grew on me.

Got chance to drive a manuel 2013 turbo, pic related, same color and wheels. Pretty fun car, responds decently well to corners and pretty zippy in straights. The gearbox was frustrating at times, 1st to 2nd gave me some trouble. Interior was alright, cloth everything, but somewhat dignified. I liked the steering the most, really tight and fun. Bretty fun car over all, would recommend at the right price.
