What's the ultimate secondary car or winter beater. Something that's super cheap on fuel (~50 mpg range) , Toyota Hilux levels of reliability and super cheap to fix with lots of parts available. These are the only things that matter it, so can be as slow and ugly as you want. So anon what is it?
A turdcel obviously, or geo metro

Civic.

Why
Just picked this 203k mile '96 ES300 for that very purpose. Nowhere near your mpg target (I've been getting 24 mpg commuting so far), but for $1600 I have a comfy, quiet cruiser with heated seats. Rims are 15 inches and bolt pattern is pretty universal so picking up steel wheels to put snow tires on is cheap and easy.

E110 Corolla is another good choice. Not quite as high quality feeling as the 102, but a bit more pep and equally reliable overall (just watch for oil consumption).

Seems to big would it be good on gas?

> a bit more pep
Is that really important in a winter beater ?
>>15942897
So you can git gud at driving in the snow. Fuck 4wd, unleash your rage in the snow with sick uphill drifts
>>15943154
Not necessarily I suppose, but 122hp vs 105hp is a useful bump IMO when you're already scraping the bottom of the barrel powerwise.
>>15943250
Fuck rwd, just get a proper front wheel drive and drive around with the hand brake engaged.
>>15943035
Why is it on four jack stands?
As usual the answer is old mercs
>>15942897
oversteer is easier to control than understeer
>>15943056
fuck that, those things barely stay on the road at 80kph in summer
>>15942897
hektic skids
I drove this thing through many Buffalo winters and never once had a problem. Decent snow tires, and common sense will get you home every time. A limited slip diff doesn't hurt either and makes taking every corner sideways that much easier.

This, steer with your right foot

Good luck if you live anywhere with a proper frozen wasteland.

nice pick for $1600
Rsx, I beat the ship out of mine and it runs great. Could use a couple grand of body work from the scratches rock chips and rust though. Terrible quality paint and the "typical Honda rear quarter rust"

> couple grand
just diy it
europoor here, is a golf 3 a smart choice as a cheap winter beater?
>tfw poorfag
>tfw I'd drive any of these "winter beaters" all year around
>>15943714
Thanks, been enjoying some very comfy quiet commuting. It truly drives like something with a fraction of the mileage. Suspension is still smooth for the most part, no rattles or weird noises, engine and transmission are smooth and run like new. I need to dick around with the power steering to figure out why it seems to cut out at parking lot speeds occasionally, and do the t-belt.

Think bigger. You wanna b safe in the winter.
You think an Impreza or a civic will keep you safe from A milf's suburban T boning you?
Get a full size pickup truck
Not a ranger
Not a jeep
Not a Dakota
A fuckin half ton from one of the big 3

Yeah

I agree that something FWD and with some weight over the front wheels (and back) is useful, especially on the highway cutting across slush mounds between lanes. Light compacts will get thrown off course. Something like an old W-body or Taurus, or Camry works well here.

>old W-body
Buick Regal GS's were made for the snow
Skyline or GT-R w/RB swap.
More realistically
CR-V
Juke
Rav-4
CX-5
Outback
Escape
Cherokee
Blazer
Are the best winter beaters for each of their brands IMO. None new of course, and all with 4WD or AWD.
I don't know about European cars, but you said cheap readily available parts.
>>15942639
Subaru Outback, AWD Wagon, all you need for the winter

>Skyline or GT-R w/RB swap.

Just don't buy 1.4 or 1.6 petrol
>>15949287
Why is that? Those are the cheapest ones I can find
