Most of us wrench, which means we have to at least own a few tools. So Tool Thread.
>Tool boxes
>New tools
>Useful tools
>New aquistions.

Post your questions and tools ITT.

Hopefuly by christmas I will have enough money to buy myself a Husky or Kobalt tool chest, debating on getting the one with speakers or not. I also want to get the roll around Husky tool chest that has the raiseable work bench.

My most used tools
>AC Delco Floor Jack (Fucking garbage)
>AC Delco jack stands (They're alright)
>Husky 30 peice ratchet set (Amazing for price)
>Craftsman 3 drawer plastic tool box with assorted tools (You know the one)
After I get a pickup Im going to pick up a cherry picker and engine stand and a stock 302 to tear apart and rebuild.

Been waiting for this thread since I moved a couple weeks ago. I finally have a decent garage with a workbench. Still need to grab a bunch of pegs and figure out what to hang.

>>15934758
Fuck that

>>15934758
I understand the point of getting SnapOn hand tools, but I don't understand the point of getting a SnapOn tool chest. Seems unnecessary.

My dad had so much shit and I got a lot of it like a year and a half ago but have no clue what happened to the rest. Doesn't help that he moved a few times the past couple years and I had people in Colorado shipping shit to me in Florida and there is probably still stuff somewhere in Illinois.

I want to purchase a Husky tool cabinet/workbench from Home Depot.

I know that Sears has sales on Craftsman around Christmas; does Home Depot usually do the same?

Engine stands are nice to have, but ends up being one of those things that is already at somebody else's place. That's what happened when my buddy bought one and it was in a different garage every other weekend.
>>
>>15934744
Did the wheels fall off your floor jack too?
>>
>>15934744
If you are going to buy a rolling cart, you could probably cheap out a bit more on the bigger tool chest. Not like you need ultra low friction bearings on the big stationary one.

And those speakers are retarded. Just get a bluetooth speaker or something.
>>
>>15934758
Well when you're a poor fag I can't justify spending what? 1.5k on a tool box.
>>15934765
I eventually will but when you move 900 miles from those tools you kinda gotta get your own.
>>15934784
Yeah usually, and after too, I usually go after dented shit they drop the price pretty good.
>>15934795
I almost never let people borrow my shit unless I'm with them or trust them enough.
>>15934822
No but now I'm looking forward to that, they did fall off the creeper though, the jack just has a super shitty head on it.
>>15934850
I just want the tool chest combo that t
rolls cause then I dont have to take shit out whenever I have to move it, and the roll around workbench is a far far thought for when I get my own garage, currently in a shit appartment so Id have to keep everything in storage. The speakers just seem like a neat idea but I never actually tried to see how they play.

>$1.5k for a Snapon
You are underestimating how ridiculous their pricing is.

And seriously skip on the speakers. A decent toolbox should last you decades. No way the speakers will last that long. I just use this little bluetooth speaker and it has a battery so I can move it if I need to work somewhere else.

You have a Lowe's nearby? Just keep an eye out for the big sales. Sears has Craftsman sales a couple times a year and it's a good idea to jump on the stuff when there is a sale instead of waiting until you really need it and have to pay twice as much. Lowe's recently had some nice kits on sale, convinced some anon to grab some 400pc+ Kobalt set that was on sale for $199 off of $399. It had everything, all the usual ratchets and open ended wrenches, but then it had the ratcheting box wrenches (which run ~$100 alone), a ton of extra extensions and u-joints, a breaker bar, a couple sets of hex keys (long & short, metric & SAE), and all of those torx, hex, and driver sockets that come in really useful.

Only know how to change the oil, sparkplugs, fluids etc. Have been using loaners want to have my own shit.

$100 budget, question: What basic tools are essential/brand/new or used/good box or bag to keep them in?

Thanks

>>15934744
I was looking for a pilot bearing puller the other day and found something I hadnt seen before.
Its a self-tapping threaded fitting with a grease nipple on the end.
You screw it into the bearing hole and use a grease gun to force grease behind the bearing and push it out.
Has anyone ever used one of these before?

>>15935359
HF would be good for some of the smaller stuff. I say grab a Husky or Craftsman kit on sale like I posted here >>15935224 and you will be set for sockets and they often have some screwdrivers or at least the bits. Then drop a few more bucks on a set of pliers. After that, just kinda see what you need for jobs. HF would be good for a breaker bar, C-clamp for breaks, hammer and mallet, etc.

It's a little different if you want to do carpentry stuff around home too. Those kits with all the sockets will help with cars and machinery, but I do a lot of weekend warrior projects and that's where tape measures, levels, studfinders, drills, and other power tools come in handy. So that stuff is worth having around the house. And if you don't have a cordless drill, def think about that. When you buy that Ikea TV stand held together with 5mm hex bolts, a drill can turn it from an hour long job to a 20min job.

$100 is not enough.

get a kobalt 3/8 torque wrench with a wide setting range and get a usgeneral box from HF.

sockets set, wrench set, plier set, driver set, dead blow hammer.

rest buy as you need.

He's also onto it here >>15935423

Boxes aren't cheap. But if you aren't rolling it around the shop all day, you don't have to spend $5000 on one. But even the US General ones will probably run $250+ on sale.

Torque wrench is nice, but depends what you are doing and how retarded you are. Good ones are a fairly large purchase and if you need it to do a head job once you could probably just borrow one from an auto parts store.

The sockets, wrenches, and driver sets will all be in one of those $100-$300 Craftsman, Kobalt, or Husky kits, so that and a pliers set will get most stuff done. If you live in the rust belt and/or plan on doing suspension work, breaker bar for sure. Agree on the hammer/mallet. One more thing to grab (especially for suspension) is one of those small propane torches. Penetrating oil, propane torches, and a breaker bar are a must-have with suspension work.

>>15935450
I had an old drill press and a nice big vise at the house I grew up in and I regret not tearing that shit out before I moved. Drill presses are fucking great but it's hard to justify the price. I think I had a bearing press there too but that garage was falling apart.
>>
>>15935450
Good relative to what? a $4,000 baileigh precision press? No.
drilling safety wire holes isnt precision work just get one from lowes/home depot/sears. ive used a 'shitty' one for years without issues.
>>
>>15935494
I was worried more about the the drill crapping out that the holes being perfect.
>>
>>15935508
use low rpm, oil, and a stubby carbide/cobalt bit.
you dont need to spend more than $200 for the press and vice.
>>
>>15935006
I was thinking used for 1.5k looked them up on local CL real quick.
>>
>>15935533
This.
I had to drill 40 or so half inch holes through quarter inch steel and I did it all on a cheap ryobi press. I did it all on the lowest speed with oil at the ready. The bit i used was from home depot too. The bit was pretty much trash after that.
>>
>>15935562
I can actually get decent bits for cheap from a friend who works in a machine shop. (They aren't allowed to do non-work projects or I'd toss him a sixer and a BJ to get them all drilled.)

Also it's pretty laughable how cheap and unrealistic you guys think a quality tool set runs. $10k buys a pretty complete basic tool set if quality tools. I can easily see having $2k in power tools alone in quality non tool truck pneumatics and cordless tools.

You'll love it once you've got it in place. I installed a different type of lift a few years back, one of the best things I have in that garage, it's handy for so much more than just cars too, becomes 2 extra work benches with adjustable height, tilting stuff, lawnmower, tiny wheelloaders can get on it sideways etc.
Posting some pics.

Yes exactly. I use these in 3/8 drive for everything. I've had them for a year and only broken 1 socket. I'm not sure how they would hold up in 1/2 drive though as you are dealing with much higher torque values.

Hard to say without know what it looks like. I did a part of a larger hall earlier this summer. First I removed some of the old gravel/sand as it had a lot of old grass, firewood bits etc. in it,, then added a 10 cm layer of crushed stone, compacted, some reinforcement mesh with some distances, then a 12-15 cm layer of concrete, for keeping the right levels a rotational laser with a homemade little platform and a bull float, but there are simpler and cheaper ways to go about that too, like using a reasonably straight plank

The Harbor Fright fright Pro ratchets are great for the price. All the Taiwan made ratchets (which the HF Pro ratchets are) are all made in the same factory in Taiwan. So we are talking Kobalt, Husky, the pro craftsmen and the HF Pro line. They are all the same thing with just a different grip and head stamp. Might as well go for the cheapest one (which also has a lifetime warranty).

I do wanna get a long reach flex head 1/4 snap on for tight work but it's hard to justify 100 bucks for it plus if you are a drive way warrior like I am you are gonna have issues getting warranty repair/replacement with snap on without paying shipping. Even if you track a truck down they won't even talk to you since you are not gonna be buying a lot/anything from them.

I got a SHLX80A that I've been trying to get repaired for about a year now. I gave up and got this HF Pro 1/2 on a impulse buy. I got real stupid with it and I haven't broken it yet.

Any other decent 1/4 long reach flex heads out that are worth while? Looking for something small to get out things like FWD water pumps and whatnot.
>>
>>15940999
Wiping the oil off is a good idea, but polishing them every time you use them is retarded. I've been a technician for almost 20 years now and never needed to do anything more than a wipe down.

T. Not the guy you're bitching at for not polishing his tools.
>>
>>15940365
I can see that being useless for a wide range of cars. For example if a car has side skirts, or a truck with step sides. What happens when the lift points don't line up with those platforms? A traditional 2 post would have been way more worth the effort and money imo.
>>
>>15941228
Real talk. How much did all that work run you?
>>
>>15941309
>Even if you track a truck down they won't even talk to you since you are not gonna be buying a lot/anything from them.

Fucking hell this. I used to be an auto tech, and I've yet to meet any kind of Snap-On rep that didn't have his head firmly planted up his ass. Never bought any Snap-On tools almost entirely because of their attitude, even with a 50% discount available to me from being in school. Most of my tools were SK, C-Man, some Hobo Freight, and other various odds. Tool box was an Extreme Tools 54in, just as thick and heavy as a Snappy box at 1/4 the cost.. Bought some shit from the Matco guy though, just because he was chill as fuck.
>>
>>15941759
Well, so far all cars I've had on it have worked. Had a lowered Skyline with side skirts (Bomex) a while ago, there's these rubber cushions of different height that you put under the lifting points, same would apply on a stepside truck I'd think. If you check out one of the pictures you can see the back of the lift is extendable so one can adjust it to fit.

Looks good. I've used a few different scissor lifts, and my buddy has a similar style (though not sunken into the ground). I like them, but I'm a two post fan myself.

I can't wait to install it, but I need to save up a little bit over the winter. My compressor is on it's way out, and I blew my last load of cash on a chinko special tire machine and balancer last fall.

You want friends and neighbors to bother you, buy a tire machine.

How many duplicate wrenches and sockets would a serious mechanic want to have on hand?

I've bought my own tools, inherited more sets from my father, inherited even more from old friends, and pick up whatever I find deals on at yard sales. So I've ended up with thousands of quality wrenches and sockets. It's great when I lose a wrench five times in a row and I still have a sixth, but I'll be moving soon as I feel like this is overkill.

Not on this board. Most faggots here are bus riders.

God tier, so sexy. The draw pull is strait sex and the drawers go balls deep.

Of course they do. Everything is on sale. And you'll get killer deals on black Friday, which is now starting on thanks giving.

>Kobalt
What's their quality and feel nowadays? I wish I had more snap on/mac etc ratchets because they're so good and feel fantastic. Can kobalt/craftsmen etc match that?
>>
>>15937307
>takes five seconds to wipe off shit on your ratchet
>not taking five minutes at the end of the day to clean and put away tools
>being this much of a pleb
gtfo you degenerate.

>>15937526
Those things are the shit. So useful and handy. Just sucks they cost so much.

>>15937698
>Pride is in the workmanship and not the tools you fucking clown.

Only half right nigger. You don't spend all that money on quality tools and then trash them. No one is polishing tools all day. Ten minutes tops wiping them down at the end of the day.
>all that projecting about competence
Stay mad because you'll never leave jiffy lube.
>>
>>15941705
Wait a second, how do you polish tools anyway? A good wipe is all you need, I'm kind of confused here.

>>15941832
I didn't like my snapon faggot either. Mac and cornwell guys were chill af so I bought from them.
>>15943516
>chinko special tire machine and balancer last fall.
So jealous. How much did that cost and how well do they work? Oh, can you do motorcycle tires on them?

>>15943939
Fuck it, keep them all. I would. Can't go wrong with an abundance of quality tools.

Sorry, if you meant the floor mentioned in that post it was about €65/cubic metre.
The floor was about 108 sq metres and it took about 17 m3. Started mixing 5:45 pm and finished 7:45 am the next morning, with maybe an hour of afterwork later on (could probably almost cut that time in half with a helper though). The total cost including mesh, cement, all aggregate, minor details was €1720,

>>15943429
Take some length and width measures too

>>15943516
Have seen those tyre machines in the ads, been a bit tempted but can't quite motivate getting one for my small amount of usage. Would be great for polishing and renovating damaged wheels too tho. Are they easy to get the hang on, do they work well with low profile tires too?
>>
What would a kit like this be good for and are these shit

SK is great value esp in sockets. They are US made and cost 1/4 of what a Snapon set will go for. Snapon literally a brand to rip off auto techs.

>>15943516
I do have the 1/4 and 3/8 along with my 1/2 inch version. I only use the 1/2 ratchet (I stock 1/2 all the way down to 10mm). Then go right to 1/4. at 10mm or smaller your gonna be hard pressed to break one I think. With that said the 1/2 HF ratchet is huge. Just really struggled doing a water pump on a FWD because the space was so right. Which is why I was looking to get that extra long snapon 1/4 flex head but fuck I hate snapon. SK and the others don't seem to have a comparable ratchet.

Please i need a starter set for basic maintenance
>>
>>15945308

Would predict it's crap, but it's going to work just fine for some basic repair stuff, you're probably going to have to buy some additional sockets and spanners, which will be annoying because it's pretty handy to have it all in one kit. But 20 bucks isn't really anything to moan about, buy it, try it, if you find you need more/better stuff just give it away and buy something else.

That man used to be /diy/ as fuck but now he's a hoverboarding, vlogging, snapchating faggot. His old videos were comfy as fuck, the new ones are trash

Jesus I wouldn't be surprised if they were made of tin

>>15944413
Does seem like a shit load of work but it looks well done and useful. I just plan on getting a bendpak and skip all that.

>mossy oak snapon

wow what a faggot.
>>
>>15940999
I've been in the industry for 6 years motherfucker. Everything gets wiped down and put away at the end of the day but plastics and rubbers stain over time. Organization is key, but heavily used tools arent going to look new unless you're a lube bitch who has nothing better to do with his time.
