Target fixation can be overcome by closing your eyes, counting to 10, then opening them.

question only eurofags will get

Would it be a decent idea to do the A1 test right now, then do the Direct Access course a while later to get my proper license?

Doesn't cost much to do the test and I already have a 125cc. Or is it a bit pointless?
>>
>>15922709
Which country are you in and how old are you? In the UK, it's as expensive to do the A1 as it is the A and going from the former to the latter costs as much again so it's sometimes better to wait.

I'm 18 and from the UK, I don't turn 19 until late july. I don't have a car or driving license, but I need to get something so I can commute to work. I was always going to wait until I was 19 before riding so I could get an A2 bike instead of a shitty A1 bike, but I do need something asap. I don't have any money atm, but get paid in 2 weeks. With a grand, could I do my CBT and buy an A1 bike to sell in july? I won't do my exam until I turn 19, but the CBT lasts until then, and I can take lessons in the meantime. Would that work? Or, what I've been considering, is spending my first paycheck on one of those 1-week car driving crash courses and buying a shitbox next month, taking the bus and shit for now. But then I'd need to sell the car when I turn 19 anyway. I guess it depends on what the resell value of what I buy is.

So, what's a not-terrible A1 bike that I can resell for ~the same price after a few months?

>>15922735
You'll lose a little bit on devaluation but your main problem will be insurance, if you take out a year policy before cancelling it after a few months you're going to lose a lot of cash. On the subject of insurance, have you gotten any quotes? It seems to me that if money's that tight, you probably won't be able to afford the insurance on a car.

Bike-wise. If you want a cheapo, basic bike, buy a used (to reduce the devaluation) CBF125 or YBR125, if you have a little more money, the Varadero 125 is probably the most competent 125 out there but they command a high price.
>>
>>15922716
In the UK.

the A1 costs £90.50 for module 1 and module.

I've got a job and live with parents atm so money is not an issue. The only issue is failing and wasting money I guess. I'm just approaching a situation where my CBT will run out in the future, I will be 24 soonish, and I am getting annoyed at the L plates. As someone already with a full car Iicense I know the rules of the road just fine.
>>15922735
>shitty A1 bikes

I've got a Yamaha YBR 125 and I can assure you, this thing is not shit. The mpg is incredible and it is easy and fun to use, and it requires less maintenance. it's like a phonecall with your mother in law, it never fucking stops going. Take it from someone who's had it for a year now. It is an absolute beast of a machine.
>>
>>15922753
Forgot to add. How far is your commute? An electric bicycle might be another option as a temporary thing so you can go straight for your DAS a bit sooner.
>>
>>15922758
That thing's got bicycle wheels. I'd go for a CBR125R
>>
>>15922763

Only 4 miles

>>15922753

I earn about 900 quid per month. Gear is also gonna be an issue. Don't want to squid it.
>>
>>15922758
>I will be 24 soonish

I'd just wait until you're 24 if it's less than a year. The module itself may only be £90 but you also need to hire a bike and have an instructor take you to and from the test centre. You could easily spend £500 getting your A2 (ignore the earlier time when I said A1, I was confused as I never had to deal with that crap) then well over £100 IF you pass both bits the first time going from your A2 to your A (no comment on your riding prowess, the Module 1 is so easy to fuck up, I only passed mine the first time by sheer luck).

Save your money and spend it in a few months on a nicer bike or gear, for example, I used to pooh-pooh midrange helmets until I went from my old HJC to Shoei.

CBT is an introductory riding lesson, basically, just to prove that you can before riding at all. Also, waiting isn't really an option. Maybe I could get a bicycle to cycle to work and wait for A2, but nearly a year of that crap would be bothersome.
>>
>>15922791
Considering they all cost around the same, especially when buying used, I feel like there's more point to getting a 125cc sportsbike. They're better trainers because you can try some advanced techniques on them.

Basically, we had a nice system for licensing and Europe had a nice system for licensing. Then Europe got pissy because if individual nations are allowed to have their own licensing systems then, the next thing you know, they might even start acting in their own interests instead of whatever Federalist Europe decides. The result was a Cronenberg-style body horror mashup of European and UK licensing law where everything is shit and the working man has to be almost as close to his 30s as his teens if he wants to ride some hilariously lethal crotch rocket. Meanwhile the super rich are able to buy their chinless offspring hypercars as soon as they turn 17, because having fun on the road is not something the poor are allowed to do.

I think the CBT is a good idea because so many youngsters were just hopping on a 125cc without any lesson or introduction at all and getting killed.

The tiered licensing though I think is shit.

I would support an automatic upgrade of the license from each tier, rather than forcing people to just retake tests as its a blatant money making scheme for the government.

And there should be restrictions on cars because its really dumb how a 17 year old can just jump in a super car if they want.
>>
>>15922814
They're taking full advantage of the permitted power output, they handle better, and especially if you're gonna be stuck with it for the full two years, you want the bike to be as good as it gets. Even then you'll probably get bored at 6 months but still.

The YZF is too expensive to be worth it, but something like a used CBR is cheap like any other bike and pretty good for a first bike

When you compare a 125 sportsbike to a 125 commuter, the sportsbike allows for more aggressive riding, even peg scraping in some cases. They got more power, they got better brakes, usually wider wheels though still skinny compared to 250+ bikes.

It's a bike a new rider can learn to ride on because it is at the end of the day a 125, but once you've learned the basics and you want to start riding more aggressively they can do that too. They won't set the world on fire with the performance but they can probably carry their momentum better.
>>
>>15922849
doesn't change the fact that it's a half-faired bike but I guess it doesn't matter since he didn't say if he means full or half faired.

Any idea why my gs500f's engine could be idling so high? It idles at 4000 after I let it warm up a little bit, and stalls out because of low RPMs if I adjust the throttle stop screw.
>>
>>15922936
Clean your carbs. Take em apart, clean them, especially the jets, and put them back together, making sure the mixture screw is in the proper position. That'll most likely fix it.

If you don't know how to do all that, it's fairly simple and there's many youtube videos on it, but you can also look up the proper position for the mixture screw and adjust it because it may have moved for whatever reason.

I am not trying to brag but I easily have the best riding Ninja 250 in this thread. I replaced the stock springs in the forks with some Sonic Springs and 15wt oil. Replaced the stock rear shock (05) with a stock (08) rear shock (adjustable pre-load).

My suspension is fucking choice.

As far as I know normal riding only minimally damages the bearing. Only whoolies or bonks from the front can actually break it.

And it breaks other stuff too, and that's without even discussing about what you can break if you eat shit while doing it.

And I ride because I like it and because I need to. And until I have 2-3 bikes simultaneously I'm not risking my only mode of transportation to do whoolies

So today I went to uncover my bike, and what I assume was the tank vent had fumes pouring out of it (I could see the distortion being made) and was dripping gas very infrequently. The tank wasn't even full. Could it just be because it got so hot in the direct sun and under the black cover? It's never happened before and when I started the bike it stopped.

I did the same with my rear wheel spacer. Put it on and rode anyways. Ground a groove into my swingarm up until it stopped grinding and rode almost normally again. When the part finally came, I discovered that the rear bearing had almost come out, the rear brake caliper had been dislocated and was thus not working and well basically I was one step away from catastroophic failure.

And then a week later I found where the original spacer had gone.

Jesus. I haven't heard any funny noises yet though. Ebay tends to overestimate so hopefully I'll have mine in sooner. How long did you ride it like that?
>>
>>15924067
What the fuck is wrong with you two?
>>
>>15924112
That I replaced the tires on my bike and now risk catastrophic damage due to a missing spacer.
>>
>>15924078
Initially it was just once to get back home but that's where most of the damage happened because it was a long ride. On that day, public transport drivers were on strike so it would have been hell to try to go to the other side of the city in any other way.

Left it once I got home and didn't ride for a week while trying to locate the part which was not easy to find. Mind you that was during mid July where temps were peaking for the whole year, so I was walking around with 40+ degrees c of heat. Mid second week I found the part and ordered it but it needed a whole week to arrive, by the end of week two I was tired of walking and I just said fuck it and started riding the bike locally, like 2-5km trips. First few still had noticeable grinding, you couldn't hear it but you could feel it braking the bike. It didn't help that as the wheel was pulled off center it put it in contact with the brake pad, which in turn pulled the caliper out of place because it's not bolted in place, just held on by the axle and a slot on the bracket.

The bolts holding the rear sprocket in place were grinding on the swingarm but once they ground their overlap after the first couple of days of riding it like that it handled mostly normally, the wheel just wobbled some times and you could feel that something was off.

I rode it for a week and a half, maybe two and a half before I finally rode back across town where I had all my tools to do it, a stupid decision but I made it without catastrophic failure.

I'd say not to ride it at all. Look for the spacer or leave it be. The groove on my swingarm doesn't seem to cause any structural problems but the heat produced from all the grinding and the brake pads touching the rotor were noticeable. You can bake your bearings, warp your rotor even, and may more stuff can break.
>>
>>15924115
you don't risk anything if you get off your lazy arse and find it/do not ride the bike
>>
>>15924126
Yeah, true. It sucks because it's my ride but I can get a car meanwhile. I just looked at my bike and saw a potential issue with the brake disc coming up really close and even touching the fork. I hope it arrives quickly.

>>
>>15924115
Yeah try to find it bro, it's somewhere. I was flustered at the time because it was really hot and I had to go pickup my gf who was stranded at the city center so I wasn't thinking straight.

But you know after the whole ordeal was over I did find the old spacer, which I'd put somewhere and it had rolled off into a nook and I couldn't see it, but I would have probably found it if I had a clearer mind. And I'd have saved unnecessary damage on my bike and 10 bucks if I had.
>>
>>15924112
To my defense it was the first time I was attempting maintenance on my bike.

Also as I mentioned on another comment I had to leave and I wasn't thinking straight at the time. If the circumstances were more lax I'd have probably found it
>>
>>15924160
I'll go back to my dad's shop and see if I can figure out where it rolled away. Already have it ordered though. If I do find it, then I'll be happy that I don't have to wait for it to arrive and I'll have a spare.
>>
>>15924168
Unlikely that you will ever need a spare as the previous 12 year old spacer had no visible wear aside form gunk but hey they're not that expensive in the end
>>
>>15924157
I think they look cool as fuck but I've never ridden one. I know RJ had one when he started riding again in 2010 or whenever but he sold it to get the bikes he has today. But then again that dude has been on and off riding for many years and he has the money to get exactly what he wants so I wouldn't hold it against the bike, it's probably good.
>>
Jesus fuck how much should I pay for 1 gallon of 10W40 full synthetic?

I see some Maximum brand stuff for $36 but everrything else seems more expensive.
>>
>>15924183
Seems about right. It's 8 euros for 1 liter here, fully synthetic. A gallon is 3.8, practically 4 liters, so 8 times 4=32. 36 sounds about right.
>>
>>15922538
>>15922543
It's likely the wheels that are being balanced by the weights, not the tires. Just leave the existing weights where they are when you change tires. Watch the little weight mark on the tire, too.
