People come and go, the Honda general has around 80 posters per thread.
How is the IS300? What kind of cost of ownership am I looking at?
>>15897917
Sounds comfy
Are car generals usually comfy?
I recently saw this at the Japanese Classic Car Show in Long Beach, CA this last weekend.
>>15897930
Make generals feel more comfy than specific model generals because no one will feel like an outcast or left out. It also depends if the community is a comfy type. The /hg/ is pretty much my home thread. It's very comfy. Trolls are handled pretty well over there too.
>>15897936
Whats that sexy car back there?
>>15897936
I don't like the current design language of Lexus. It's too wild IMO

>>15897955
From that angle it looks simple and complicated at the same time. It's hard to explain.
>>15897946
Unfortunately, I do not remember the red one, which I assume you meant, off the top of my head. I messed up and had a much lower battery life than I thought when I got there so I didn't get as many pictures as I wanted.

Thanks for taking over for me.
Echo kid here, I made the first /tg/, "why the fuck not edition", as a kind of joke as there were so many general threads. It actually got a good response, but I wasn't a regular comer, and I couldn't keep making them. I got as far as the second thread before stopping. Seeing that people want the /tg/ threads still is nice.
Sup guys.
I'm looking for a 2010-2012 Toyota Prius.
I live in Yurop, if that matters.
I had 3 cars in my life up to this point. Accord Type R 1998, Saab 9-3 Aero Turbo 2005 and BMW e46 330ci 2006.
I'm sick and tired of BMW being unreliable, I started to pretty much hate cars and I can't see myself as being a petrolhead anymore. I have this car for 3 years and it's a nightmare I can't wake up from, can't sell this shit either.
So, tl;dr - I want something REALLY reliable to get myself from A to B with decent comfort and as cheap as possible. I mean, I don't even want to think about a car I own - what's wrong now, what is going to be wrong next, etc.
I did my research, so I just want to clarify few questions.
1) Fuel consumption.
6l/100 km - 38 MPG; 8l/100 km - 29 MPG during the winter (meaning heating the car etc.).
Are these numbers realistic (worst case scenario so to say)
2) I've heard about the petrol engine problems in these models - piston rings tend to wear/are quite weak, leading to burning of oil as the car ages (worse than it should be) - can anybody comment on that? I'm not keen on adding few quarts of oil every 1000km...
3) What mileage should I look for? Some people say that if the mileage is low, battery could be bad - because the car wasn't driven enough to maintain a healthy status. On the other hand, excessive wear is bad too. What's a good number for a 2010-2012 car?
80-100k miles?
4) Any other warnings/comments? Should I be prepared for anything? Maintenance? Repairs?
>>15898110
The engines in the Prius, gasoline, I mean, can't be that unreliable, it's the same engine in the Vitz and Yaris. If you still want to keep a little piece of petrolhead with you, look for a gen 1 Vitz/Yaris RS. Toyota reliability, with performance suspension.
>>15898088
better off asking in the /dat/ mate.
anyway, i'd go for the staggeredmk4 supra wheels if they fit, no centre caps.
>>15898117
>>15898110
Wait, I didn't do my research. The '10-'12 Prius had a different engine.
My advice still stands, get an old Yaris/Vitz
>>15898135
I'm quite afraid of old cars by now.
>>15898175
Euro tax or something?
>>15898205
No, it's just that I'm extremely tired of problems that are primarily related to the age of a car.
I don't have much time as I used to, so I can't afford to do repairs myself, plus since I'm a grown boy now, expenses such as rent, insurance and so on really add up.
I want something relatively fresh and problem free, to drive it for 3 years max, then sell&forget about it.
>>15898214
How old will you go?
>>15898246
2009 would be the oldest option.
>>15898248
Yeah get a matrix or yaris

It's Celica IV from 1988.
I could get this car for cheap and since I like cars from the 80's then it's another plus for me.

what's the best Corolla model year between roughly '06 and the year before last?
>>15904763
Mine, the one on PCH there, was owned by a Japanese man that worked for Toyota as a mechanic. So overall things were pretty solid. No rust damage, everything ran well, etc. Found out when it came time for me to smog that somehow he was fudging stuff because the catalytic converter on it wasn't for the gen 1 MR2 but the 2nd gen ones. That and he tried to fix a leak in the distributor by sealing it with silicon. After a nice tune up when I was getting the thing smogged its been running better than the day I got it. Now just basic maintenance till I wanna upgrade the suspension, brakes, struts, and what not.
>>15902609

Why arnt we /yo/? Also whats porsche gen look like
Just got back from test driving a 7th gen celica. Was not too bad, steering felt great, you guys know of anything similar feeling but maybe a bit smaller? The pedal feel was a bit awkward too but that didn't bother me too much.
Though I will say on the test drive I was going straight through an intersection with the right of way and some cunt made an illegal turn right towards me and I had to swerve and floor it to get out of the way, so the celica saved my ass. I wasn't fond of it at all before that but now, damn, maybe not so bad after all.
>>15906292
Yeah 7th gens are zippy feeling cars. Id suggest it
>>15906289
>>15906302
Are the GTS much faster feeling than GT? I was just test driving a GT so if a GTS has a better pedal feel to go along with the extra power it might be nice. Still wish it felt a bit smaller though, it felt huge for what it is while driving it.
>>15906305
Boy that looks awful

I know my cousin got a new radio before he got it, but the alarm chirps whenever I close the door, and now it won't start. It cranks, but I notice the clock not only resets (1:00 every time I start it up), the center console lights are extremely dim. It did start a few weeks ago, but it idled at 550 RPM when it got warm.

>>15905607
Mine was fucked owned by a 24 year old girl and her biker boyfriend used it for a daily. Had a big old hole in the expansion tank, intake leaks, he put the exhaust manifold gasket on wrong too so that leaked, one of the spark plug wires wasnt even pushed in all the way. They literally didnt take care of anything. Someday shell be done up nice though but im busy and broke spending money on my other car.
>>15907265
A damn shame they had such a nice car and treated it like shit. The Japanese man that had mine had passed away. The family he was renting a room from became the owners of it but they didn't need it which is why they, after letting it sit for a 4-6 months, were trying to sell it. They threw in a new battery, sparks, and wires to get it going for smog. Otherwise now that I have it and did that tune up there are no oil leaks, the engine bay is cleaned up from the leak it did have, and runs great as a daily. I honestly plan to keep this car for the rest of my life especially because it doesn't have rust damage as most of them do.

I don't like cheap wheels though. To have a more quality set of wheels for ~$1300 than XXR's or F1R's for ~$700, I'm not bothered. Timing belts at around 100k miles.
Other than that, try to find an off-lease car, or something with regular service history and not something owned and abused by a woman or minority (unlikely for a 2013).
Probably one of the safest bets in used or new cars of any time. They are great cars.

>>15911117
I've already put mods that I had planned for Street Class Autocross and then some.
MWR Shift Base and cable Brass Bushings
South Bend Stage 2 Clutch
Tanabe Front Strut bar
Eibach Rear Anti-Sway Bar
KYB AGX adjustable dampers w/ stock springs
The ones I have planned:
Ferrea dual valve spring and titanium retainer kit
Moroso Oil Pan
Todo Oil Pump Gear
Those are just for reliability, I'm pretty much replacing the weaknesses of the 2ZZ engine (Oil starvation, weak valve springs, shitty oil gear).
Also, maybe I'll finally get some good Summer tires. Maybe RE071 Bridgestones or if I cheap out, maybe some Federal 595s.
It has a short ram intake, but I'm going to take that out and put that stock air box in, because it would put the car in street modified.

Mine was used as an autocross beater and was abused before that too. Missing a lot of interior pieces and has a lot of cosmetic issues but I'm working on fixing her up

I want to turn mine into a AutoX machine. Would you say the sway bar is a definite buy, for this car?
Also is yours a 2002?
>>15911711
>>15911252
I thought it was not a good idea to put front sway bars on a FWD car.
1ZZ is love
1ZZ is life
>>15902386
Eh. If you was a convertible, MR-S is probably better. At least it's much lighter and easier to drive.
My accident free sc with low miles and strong running 2JZ. Was never abuse by its previous owner.
Should I buy a slightly rusty mark 3 supra for 2100 maple bucks?
It needs new tires, and possibly a power steering pump, but has a new 7m from japan installed by a professional, a new turbo, and TEMS still works. the bod panels aren't super rust, but there's some cracks on the doors and fenders. It's plenty drivable, and would pass safety.
>>15911935
He said rear though
>>15912158
>never abused
Sure buddy
>>15911711
Definitely, our Celicas have some pretty bad understeer, an aftermarket rear sway bar makes the back feel more leveled.
Mine is an '00.
>>15911935
You're right about that, I only put a front strut bar just to reduce some body flex at the front.
>>15912275
If it's a manual, it's actually a pretty good price considering the gearbox has an R154, which itself costs like ~$1300 USD these days. Where exactly is the rust?
>>15912275
The head better be torqued right
>>15912625
Thanks pal, still getting used to her habits. Lovin' it so far.
Got some tc rims for my 15' rolla :^) what else should i do to it? Im thinking an exhaust but i dont wanna make it sound rice-y. Thoughts?
>>15912636
R154s are shit compared to their replacement, which GM used, the AR-5
>>15912745
How do you like the celica? My friend is looking for a car and i recommended the gt-s because it sounds like a fun car.
>>15912636
It's actually an auto. I have one leg because cancer so I can't drive stick. Real unfortunate that I'm into cars.
There's a few cracks on the fenders, a bit of bubbling. Could probably be grounded down, but the crack would still be there obviously. There's also a split in the door right on top of the trim horizontally. I wish I took pictures, but my phone was dead.
>>15912297
I missed that part.
>>15912625
Does the Celica have a torsion beam rear?
I'm thinking of getting a rear sway bar for my corolla.
>>15912795
I would maybe get a drop and that's it.
Here's Camry rice for you bros.

Hey tgf, it's 300$celicabro here.
Bought this a week ago for 300$ and im currently in the process of putting in another 5sfe.
I may go with a 3sgte swap or 5sgte mod in th3 future, but I'm just trying to get something fun to daily right now.
Latest update: engine is out.
>>15914981
This engine was locked and made a nasty noise when I tried to push start it. I found the problem.
>>15915010
This was behind the AC compressor so the last owner probably didn't see it.
5sfe lasted 230k miles. Good night sweet prince
>>15914981
How much did the engine cost?

Nope, Double Wishbone Rear, MacPherson Front.

Thanks, Shin-guuu
I never got why people plasti-dip badges. It looks bad on 90% of cars. I wonder which exhaust pipe is real.
>>15916052
That whole trim piece is carbon fiber too. Such a weird car to mess with. Shit, the same day I saw this. Pretty sure those were bigger than my fart cannon.
Can someone redpill me on the celica VII gen?
I want to switch to it from a swift.
What causes trouble, how costly is maintenance etc.
Surprised I'm the first one in the thread.

Oil consumption issues on per-facelift models, the one in your pic is 03 or later. Lift bolts (applies to GT-S model only, you shouldn't waste your time with a regular GT) should be checked out as the ones in 00-02 models tend to separate from the rocker-shaft. Oh and GT-S requires premium gasoline.

It's okay, criticism is largely undeserved. They did what they could considering modern car's restrictions. Plus, every version has LSD (even if I have a hard time understanding what that is).

I just agreed to buy a rusty mark 3 supra with a new motor. Gonna take it home and retorque the head bolts. Wish me luck, and please pray for my soul.

Sup bro. How you liking it?
Here's mine, black is hard af to keep clean. Any mods done to yours?
Where the other LSbros at? Been driving this for a month after bringing the neglected maintenance up to date, and its comfy as fuck
>mfw 23 year old timing belt, water pump, literally everything that should have been replaced by time despite 140,000km
>based rockauto has everything for 500 bucks
>>15919726
Here's your new bible if you didn't have it already. The only thing wrong in it is the head bolt specs obviously. Do 74ft-lbs or a little more if you're using the stock bolts or do whatever ARP recommends if you go with replacement bolts from them (I think it's 90ft-lbs using their grease.) Good luck m8..

Good info already in this thread. Was getting gas today and some old guy driving a Landcruiser really liked my Celica and was going on about his '71 Celica with 4 gears SOHC. He was saying how he used to burn rubber and and blow the doors off the local cars here.
Was cool he was still loyal to Toyota after all these years.
Anyone know where I could unload Toyota swag?
My cousin works for Toyota and has loads of SCION and Toyota swag like pic related.

LS430 here. Just got it a few weeks back. Already of thinking of getting my one just like this one, or giving her this one and getting an 09-10 LS460 for myself.

Better hope the carfax/autocheck report says it was taken in for that recall. Mine was taken in the recall fortunately..

I smile every time I walk up to her. Did a low marker/brake light, tails as turn, and LED reverse. Sold an Escort to get it so power is just fine right now. This Ultramarine paint shows all the dust and scratches from a damn fly on the highway.

Right on man! Love the tails!
Don't have very many mods either. TRD springs and sway bars, k&n panel filter and Berk Muffler delete. Check it out..it sounds so sexy. If you're not going FI any time soon might as well save $500 on your exhaust with just the muffler delete, then use that money saved for an OFT to go cornfed. <3

The 7th gen Celica is a great car.
GT is a great daily driver. Not the fastest car in the world. Handles great. Will get you anywhere you want to go. In winter, throw a set of winter treads on, and climb through a foot of snow for 40 miles. I've done it multiple times. Also almost died from heart attack by the time I got to where I was going each time. But I got there. They look great, interior and exterior. Down side: Again, not the fastest car by any means. High mileage can sometimes burn oil (rings stick causing blowby).
GT-S: Purty fast. All the pluses of the GT listed above. No issue with oil consumption on high mileage engines. But you do need to watch the lift bolts.
Get one. They are wonderful cars. Either the GT or GT-S. I know someone else said 'dont waste your time on a GT', but keep in mind that if you're just looking for a solid daily driver, a GT is a great car. If you want to play racer-boi every day and race around 24/7, then yeah, you probably will want a GT-S.

l have the T-Sport (=GT-S). Uphill launches in winter are a bit tricky because the car is so light. But l was surprised to survive the whole winter with it. Never failed to start even sitting out in the snow.
>>15921895
Damn that's a nice back drop, but that shot would have looked amazing at night. Also, I'm surprised how good the stock wheels look in Bronze. Did you just plasti-dip them?

Do you have video of that exhaust set up? I wanna hear how it sounds. Also, how are the Tein coils treating you?

Ignore the GT. (shortblock problem)
Get GTS only in manual. Auto totaly destroys the character of the car and makes it even more slow.
2004 RAV4 VVT here.
Anyone know anything about the stereo? I want to add an AUX cable to it.
>>15928456
Also I want to get an MR2 rev 2 after having to push my car up a slight incline off the street, onto the driveway.
What's the things to look out for when buying? My research has led me to look out for shit aftermarket and rust.

Like it. I got the TRD wing for my 7th gen about a year ago. Really changed the looks of it. Am a big fan of the factory body lines, though. A nice body kit can accent them tastefully, however.
