Well I hope you guys are happy, I got let go before my shift even ended. They called me and wanted me in at 9 instead of noon.

Accidentally double gasketed a new camry and the filter let go on the highway. Customer called back, didnt realize that oil was flowing out and the engine seized. They said it was either make me pay or let me go. Chose to just leave.

Fucking pissed.
>>
>>15893311

Double gasket is a pretty noob mistake. Sucks to lose your job.
>>
>>15893311
Damn bro.......
>>
Car noob here. What does double gasket mean, and how do you do it accidently?
>>
>>15893311

man even doing my own oil changes at 16 I knew to make sure the old gasket came off of an oil filter.

I lol'd. You deserve it....a job that requires training is that way for a reason. Potentially could have killed someone with your stupidity.

Find a job you are QUALIFIED for.

Oil filters have a gasket on them

Double gasket is when the gasket gets stuck onto the mounting face on the block, and you screw the new filter onto it

Not him, but come on, that's a bit of a stretch for a double gasket.

This seems like a pretty stupid mistake, no offense to OP.

>>

Learn from your mistake and never do it again. You did the right thing to leave. They have insurance. Any company that tells you to pay is a shady business.

Is this really what American companies are like? They fire people for making a mistake anyone could have done? Sure you check for double gaskets every damn time, but you're bound to fuck up at one point or another. Especially in a hectic environment like a workshop.

But you really fucked up by not checking the engine compartment after driving it out into the parking lot.

>Proof or bullshitting
You missed yesterday's thread where OP posted in a panic asking for advice. He interviewed at a Toyota dealership and got hired after lying about his work experience. OP said he needed a job. So today's thread is just the summary.

I appreciate OP coming back to fill us in on what happened. It's too bad he was not able to learn on the job, but he should have tried to work at some entry level place first rather than trying to get some higher paying job that required skills to avoid damaging customers' cars and ruining the dealership's reputation.

I inspect my car after servicing. The younger or nubie-looking the employees are, the more worried I am. When I see nothing but older guys working, I feel a lot of relief. I always inspect my car after an oil change. I drive a distance away, put my phone on a selfie-stick, and get nice views of the underside of the car. If you have a selfie stick, it really is useful in checking your car out. You can have movies as well as take pictures using remote shutter control.

FYI, insurance is for "Oh shit half the lift failed and dropped a car on its side" not "Oh shit the new guy fucked an engine". Any company so blatantly abusing their insurance like that is going to end up bankrupt or without an insurance company willing to cover them.

I'm surprised he properly lifted the car with a hoist.

>Raised hoist to almost touching
>Readjusted saddles
>Lifted some more
>Set back down and adjusted again
>Raised vehicle
>Walk around all four corners and one of the saddles wasn't 100%
>Let down and adjusted
>Raised vehicle

The world is full of people who boldly lie about their qualifications and what they did at their previous jobs. It can be particularly effective if they pick a business that just recently went out of business. That would leave the prospective employer with no one to contact since the shop is gone.
>>
>>15893311
Well at least now you can add "Toyota Tech" to your resumé and you won't be lying.
>>
>>15893311
What did you expect was going to happen?

Without taking anything away from the seriousness of your mistake, if they hired you and threw you on the line without vetting you, that was probably a shitty place to work anyway. Any competent service manager should have seen how green you were from a mile away. For future reference, do not lie about your experience if you want to be a mechanic. Or anything else for that matter.

>inb4 someone says it was an easy mistake that can happen to anyone.
This bullshit was preventable. Now some tech is gonna have to put a motor in for warranty time. But... at least it's one of the easier cars to work on.
>>
>>15893436
If the motor locks up while the car is in gear at high speed it can potentially cause a loss of control. Also, oil all over the road can cause other vehicles to lose control.
>>
>>15895408
Me too. I guess OP must have double o-ringed it, and then called the o-ring a gasket.

No, but occasionally some small local shops can be fooled by bold liars. It seems inconceivable that someone would lie all the way to the shop floor where they would be forced to prove themselves. But that toyota shop will probably test applicants from now on.

They had to eat the cost of an engine due to OP causing the engine to be lossed.
>>
>>15897366

>laws regarding firing people in my country are radically different from the US

Hiring and firing laws differ within each State in the USA, so the USA does NOT have one single way of doing things. In some states, it is easy to fire someone (anti union states) as any reason can be used as long as it is Constitutionally legal (aka bill of rights). In those states, having a fuckup can get you fired. Other states have grievance requirements.

In OP's case, it's best for him to run away and never mention it anywhere. If the newspapers got hold of the story, they would run it for the LOLs and show OP's real full name for everyone to see. That would really make it hard to get a job in his area.

That screencap is from the anime "Koutetsujou no Kabaneri" (aka Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress) by WIT Studios (the maker of the popular hit anime series Attack on Titan). If you like trains, this anime has more on-board train action than any other anime in the past 20 years. It has strong visuals, good sound effects, audio styling, and a good amount of cinematography that you'd expect from an action drama series..

>I just read your first thread and don't understand how you can be so desperate to apply to a position you have no clue or even interest about.

Not OP, but as a former volunteer in social services, I've seen any number of cases where people are desperate for money. That desire justifies all sorts of methods in getting money or social services. What other people need is secondary or tertiary. At least toyota was able to fire the former employee without paying severance wages or go thru a discrimination lawsuit. With my current employer, a discrimination lawsuit can cost up to 120K but usually winds up at 40K. So the company may pay out $10K to $25K settlement just to make the case go away.

That's why some people will say anything to get hired. They just need to be hired. If fired, they can then file a discrimination lawsuit and make the company give them a quick hit. The company is obligated to try to hire and have racial equality because it does have federal contracts. Many times, these hires are not up to the task but firing them is very difficult if it is for a job contracted with the government. It can take up to one year during which they are to be paid if there is any discrimination EVEN if PROVEN incompetent. What matters more is that discrimination occurred. Further, they are immune to layoff for one year after the suit. It's very tricky in this Obama administration which is very much anti-discrimination.
>>
>>15898023
Lmao, this is Bullshit. I work in HR law for a large corporation and we almost never settle discrimination claims. It's very easy to beat an EEOC investigation and most attorneys aren't going to take these kinds of cases due to the risk and the fact that the employer holds all of the records.
>>
>>15893429
I have vague memory's of bludgeoning off gaskets with a flat head screw driver
never thought much of it at the time only that it might leak a little less with a clean surface to bond to
>>
Why would you rush to a job at a dealership while lying about experience when you could get a job at a tire shop for a similar salary?
>>
Aren't mechanics protected against such situations?
I mean, where I live if you cause some damage, the worst they can do to you is fire you, but the workshop is insured against these kinds of accidents.
I haven't checked, but it's probably illegal here to ask the employee to pay for the damage he caused, it can only be used as a reason for firing him.
>>

>If the motor locks up while the car is in gear at high speed it can potentially cause a loss of control

I don't see how a oil leak could kill somebody, but double gasketing an oil filter is the kind of sloppy mistake that is on par with forgetting a cotter pin, not torquing a nut etc.
>>
>>15893947
Bro seriously you're talking five grand max, also if you already work at the dealership they'll take it from your check little by little not one lump sum
>>
>>15899676
That could also be a "reverse screw" by the dealership so that they don't have to use their insurance to cover an accidental loss. They can get the unskilled employee who lied about credentials to sign the paperwork to pay back the cost on some installment plan. Once he signs the paperwork, they FIRE HIM. The dealership is not so poor that they can't afford to wait a period of time to get the money plus interest. And instead of simply firing the employee and having nothing, this way they get the employee to pay back and they still fired the employee.

That's how I'd do it if I were the dealer.

If the engine is still connected to a drive gear and runs dry, it will essentially score the fuck out of the piston walls (among other components) and destroy the engine. You'll immediately lose compression and the engine will die. When you roll to a stop your engine wont move anymore.

Also, if an oil filter is tough to get off there's a good chance the gasket's stuck to the base plate. At least, that's what my experience has taught me.
>>
>>15893946
It happens. At my shop someone double gasketed and managed not to leak immediately. The car made it down the street about a mile before the gaskets shifted or something and blew out all the oil, bricked the engine.
