Buying motorcycle gear is making me lose all the interest in motorcycles.

It's worse than getting into a korean grinding mmorpg.
>>
>>15890282
Just don't wear gear. All you really need is a helmet and maybe some gloves
>>
>>15890282
If you have money, buy literally any Shoei and any leather Alptinestars gloves and boots.

If you're poor, buy literally any Icon helmet and any Dainese mesh jacket and gloves.
Problem solved.

Genuinely don't know why I wrote that, I meant jacket and gloves. Motorcycle-specific boots aren't necessary.

>>
>>15890337
I'm not missing anything, you're ignoring the fact that I didn't say boots aren't necessary. Just because your boots were shit doesn't mean that all non-motorcycle boots are shit; they need to be at least ankle high, and I doubt your work boots were.
>>
>>15890343

work boots/jump boots suck for motorcycling

What is a good site in the US that has good, affordable leathers and riding gear? Not sporty stuff, but plain riding leathers and equipment.

Also, tools, doesn't have to be Snap-On, but something that would last and be inexpensive or if pricey, worth the price.
>>
>>15890382
Yes, but motorcycle specific boots aren't necessary just like a motorcycle specific jacket isn't necessary, as in yeah you don't need them, but you should have them
>>

Yes and no.

Every time I get on mine, the suspension makes me think my tires are a bit flat. But unless I push the bike hard, I don't notice it much beyond that.

That said, it's definitely on my list of upgrades to this bike. Which, may be a cheap fix based on some things I've read by guys who know more about suspension set ups than I do.

question for you bike nerds (that doesn't deserve a whole thread)

All I've driven are dirt bikes and ATVs. I don't understand why the throttle is on the handle of the bike (the traditional twist throttle)... in case of rough terrain or something and you need to hold on to the bike, it seems like a good way for it to get loose and fly away. I know you have to know what the fuck you're doing and be careful when riding a bike but it just seems easier and safer to be able to disengage the throttle a lot easier without losing or compromising your grip.
I much preferred the thumb version when riding around.

why aren't these more common?
>>
>>15890824
>>15890737
I've read that once you adjust it for your weight it's not actually /that/ bad
>>
>>15890824

are you /la/ i might have ridden with you once m8 i remember that exhaust
>>
>>15890827
I speculate that the only reason ATVs have thumb throttles is that the steering is MUCH heavier, and bump steer is far more prevalent
You don't have to worry about those things on bikes, especially on the road. twist throttle is far superior for feel and fine control.
>>
>>15890812

>>
>>15890856
yeah, but I don't joyride around the city anymore because the Oldwing is a dangerous beast, and now I can't even ride that when I need to becuase of my shoulder, so I'll be taking the bus
>>
>>15890808
I've never had a carbed bike but I would drain them so they don't leak into the engine.

Keeping the tank right full helps prevent condensation, don't forget ethanol attracts water and kills rubber seals.

If your bike is water cooled make sure it will not freeze at -20c or whatever you are seeing.

Take battery inside, put on trickle.

There was a hawk or buzzard, idk what but it was a big ass brown bird, on the side of the road. As I was passing it flew across the road in front of me. I reached out to grab it out of reflex (like grabbing for a ball coming at you), caught the feet, it reared around and pecked/bit whatever, the shit of my hand. I got startled and sorta jumped, my bike made a wobble, I let it go grabbed the handlebars and it went back to normal.

I'm 5'2 and can pick up a 1000lb harley. You'll be fine, get a SV650.
>>
>>15891462
Perfect starter bike, not great on the highway though
The clutch is your left hand, and it's a wet clutch so you can slip it a lot more without burning it up
>>
>>15891429
There are a couple of motorcycle "types/styles" to choose from. Regardless of what you chose, I suggest you do some reading on countersteering, throttle control, and perhaps maintenance as well if you want to save money.

I think you'll improve your skills faster if you get a bike that's very manageable, but the down side of that is that you'll have to spend more money to upgrade in the future sooner.

>>15891462
I'd stay away from the grom. Standard car as in manual or auto? If you know how to drive stick then you're pretty much there.
>>
>>15891462
>starting on a honda grom
Consider something larger
>>
>>15891462
>>15891476

Elaborating: the grom is a bit too small. Not very practical imo, nor is it a pussy magnet. There are better starter bikes out there in pretty much every possible deciding factor.
>>
>>15891462

>>15891476
standard as in a manual
>>
>>15891496
You'll be all good if you've driven a manual, only difference is that you're using your left hand to control the clutch and your left foot to change gears. Just watch some yt vids on countersteering and throttle control, clutch control is important too. Have you sat on a ninja250 or a cbr250r? While I personally wouldn't recommend those particular bikes, the size of those bikes are pretty ideal since they're on the small side, but not too small like the grom.
>>
>>15891496
not to mention they're fuggin overpriced + look silly imo
>>
>>15891496
Bikes have a thingy by your left foot you use to shift it just goes up or down a gear
The clutch can slip a lot more than a car's since it's multiplate and (often) wet
As a 190cm guy i feel a tad cramped, but i see plenty of 16yos and shorter people do just fine on it

Other than that itis narrow, slow and super manouverable making it piss easy to filter, i'd suggest you try to test one before committing
>>
>>15891527
>>15891517

>>
Ausfag here, what's a good price/place to look for beginner bikes? I'm looking on bikesales, and most people are selling what i've been told are good beginner bikes like cb250 and ninja250 for about $2000-$2500.
Also, what should I be on the lookout for when buying a secondhand bike?
>>

It means that for slow speed stuff, hilstarts and all that jazz you can let out the clutch much slowly, which should help you as a beginner

>>15891558

>>15891570
Try getting a cbr250rr (mc22), they're an absolute blast. They're mainly found in AU/ NZ, really rare else where. They're very manageable too if you stay under the powerband (around 9k rev). Price range sounds about right.

http://www.clarity.net/~adam/buying-bike.html

Make sure the forks are straight. Don't want to buy a bike with fucked forks, they get fucked from big crashes. Ask when the oil has been changed. If they don't know, then I doubt they have been looking after the bike properly. See if the bike starts up cold. Check if all the lights work. If both brakes work. How worn are the tyres, brake pads? Check the condition of the chain. Most of the shit I said is also in that link, it's a great guide.

Might be information overload, take it easy and slow. Make sure to have money for helmet, gloves, jacket. Helmet + gloves are the most important imo.

The SV650 feels like it has the exact right balance of chassis, engine, braking etc. no? You had one right? you know this.

I can understand how adding more power to the equation without fixing anything else up might not be ideal and mess up the balance.

I don't like the MT-09s because they feel like have so much more engine than they do suspension and chassis.

I know at least for me if I really wanted more power than the SV has I'd want it in more of a package, like an actual sport bike shaped package.

>50 lbs more

They're actually only 20 lbs heavier, but SVs already aren't that light, they're heavier than 600s.

The SV1000 is like 636 power at the wheel but with none of the brakes, suspension or chassis and it weighs more.

I guess the real question is, why an SV1000 instead of a normal 1000? normal 1000s have torque, weigh the same and have better suspension, brakes and arguably chassis.

I love the v-twin feel too but that only really goes so far for me before practicality overtakes it.

bilt gear is fine. apply the helmet rule to everything they make. nothing can be considered safe after one crash, even a slow one. also wear good clothes under it and rain clothes over it because it's not going to keep you warm or dry.

you don't have to buy an armored anything if you are fine with wearing separate armor under it. a lot of people buy armored jackets and separate back protectors.

the brand of a helmet matters less than the standards they conform to. you're paying for a lighter, nicer looking helmet, not a safer helmet.

don't compromise on gloves. palm sliders or go home.

the safest boot will be horrible to walk in. just land head first instead of feet first, famalam. who needs collarbones anyways?

The euro supermoto channels are great, the people actually ride well, do track days, go off road etc. The americans just fucking meme about and don't ride for shit.

Look at the suggested vids after I watched one fucking video of a grom....

Why didn't they adopt a boxer motor for this instead of the i4?

They wanted a sporty tourer to compete with the tracer 900 and the multistrada, but they're two cylinders and are more manageable.
>>
>>15892218
>tracer 900

My bad, it's 3 cylinders.
>>

it's selling great, they made the right choice and you're retarded.

I'm gonna claim it was due to my superior drive out of the last turn but I think he just wasn't pulling it on enough for whatever reason.

What do you want to do when you crash, slide as you fell or curl up and roll?
>>
>>15892305
GP riders always lay flat and slide, I'd copy them. Mostly I just don't crash though.
>>
>>15892305
>What do you want to do when you crash
Usually I want to shit my pants as I see the gutter approaching at a very rapid rate.
>>
>>15892308
Yeah but curling should reduce friction points, or whatever the fuck they're called.

Look at this retard >>15892121, he broke a finger at the end of the slide because he kept the hand on the floor. Better touching the floor with other parts like the elbow, the knee and all the other round edges of the body.

I think. What do you guys say?
>>
>>15892305
>>15892308

Gear would affect what you do for sure. I don't know what gear the pros use but if it's the same as the suits that are available to us then sure maybe slide? You don't want to slide if you don't have motorcycle jacket + pants

>>

You have protections on the knee and it won't remain on the ground, you'll roll and the force will be divided so it won't be as bad as keeping the hand on the floor like a retard.

>>
>>15892218
It's the comfiest superbike money can buy, not a sport tourer. You don't tour on an XR. You travel extremely long distances very quickly in supreme comfort.

That's what a sports tourer does.
>>
>>15890737

>front suspension is shit

just do wheelies, no need for front suspension unless you're stopping
>>
>>15891865
Yes, because its legal in Aus but i take it too far and I should really stop before i get injured
>>
>>15890833
you actually can't adjust it without cracking the forks open though, there aren't even any preload adjusters for the front fork, something I consider a basic necessity not even a "clicker" or whatever it's just required if you ride a bike to have the preload set right but you can't do anything on the mt-07
>>
>>15892511
Where in Aus? In Vic we have Filtering but that's only for 30km/h and below.

We've got shitty court precedent against mounting helmet cameras too, I'm going to have to mount one to the tank since I'm not going without one. Got a $40 on the car and made about US$250 from marketing rights on one video of a silly bitch unable to back out of a car park.
