I'm designing a prototype buggy out of a cheap vw
It's designed to be a road and track vehicle, but my friends think it should have a windshield. Thoughts?
They're concerned about hitting branches offroad but it has 5.5" of ground clearance and an aluminum skidplate. I'm expecting to wear a full faced helmet
that looks overly complex for a tube chassis
and yes, you should have some roll cage to protect your necks if you roll

some of it is just aesthetics, its not going to have bodywork
im using racing seats and a 5 point harness that keeps your body well below the original roll bar, which has been dynamicallly simulated and handles a 10,000 lb impact, so you'll stay within the confines of the seat
IMO the extra roll cage is just ugly, adds weight and brings up the CoG

> Windscreen
Yes.
> Roof
Optional. Make a removable one.

yo question for OP and any other /o/tist what program did you use to draw up that chassis? looks pretty neat. Is there any other good free software for designing cars n whatnot?
How fast do you want to go in that thing? You don't have any suspension hookup points in the frame...

On flat smooth ground I'd say a stock VW drivetrain from engine to tires could reach a top speed of 50 mph minimum. With various upgrades this could be raised to 90+ mph.

Build it like your second design, then add whatever for a roof or windshield later on.

make overhead rollcage, better safe than sorry.
also optional wing and splitter, since there is no body aero to keep you on the ground
Look at midlana it's exactly this but designed by an engineer.
