The 4Matic E-Class has been a thing for over 30 years.
Its not for off road. Its for countries with a lot of snow and mud.

90% of E and S class taxis since the w210 in 1996 have had a 2.2L turbo diesel. They're not as slow as you might think.
Its also the only engine you can order with a Manual transmission.

A lot of civilian ones too use that size engine too, mostly for tax reasons.
