what's most likely to break in the engine bay when i drift an automatic?

almost every time i get hectic, i'll hear some noise that sounds like a bad cluch for some time afterwards and when i've driven it normally for 3 minutes it reverts back to normal. keeps grinding with my accelerations and slows down to a halt when i brake.

maybe i'm just low on oil somewhere, Dodge tends to have that problem
>>
>>15867974
Power steering, or piston rods
>>
>>15868077
will the engine light let me know if it's the piston rods? the car is a 2007 charger

i'm all for putting the engine on a stand because i'm experiencing massive oil sludging problems but i don't have time to do this for at least one month so i'll either have to keep DDing it or fix up my lancer.

Looking for a project car for me and my dad. He's former mechanic and currently auto shop teacher. Looking for budget, RWD, light, at least 40 years old - I'm in yurop, so the first thing that comes to mind is a Kadett. Any other ideas?

I'd like to engine swap the thing. Options (keeping it in the family):
>Buick/Rover 215 V8
Pros: Small and light. Reasonably cheap too.
Cons: they break, limited gearbox choice, bad MPG.
>Ecotec turbo
Pros: Good power, light, good MPG
Cons: Not a V8.
>Aluminium 5.3 (L33, LC9, LH anything)
Pros: Great power, reasonably light, good MPG
>Cons: big, it's still an LS swap

Could you think of any other cheap RWD classic like this? Has to be 40yr old, so it's exempt from road tax and gets cheap insurance. Other engine swap ideas are welcome too.

Two year automotive degree worth it for a life skill? I am not worried about working in a shop forever, but feel like it could be great to have the knowledge to do anything on my own.

Basically free with financial aid for me, worth it?
>>
>>15868697

Get a degree you actually want to use. You don't seem to want to be a mechanic, so it's probably a bad decision.

I love older cars and do a lot of stuff myself already, but I would love to do more upgrades, flip crap for friends, things like that.

I dont need to work for a while, I got a amazon business up and running that covers all my expenses currently.

Figured I could go back for a different degree later on
>>
>>15868711
Get your degree in something you want as soon as possible. You're young now, and you'll learn stuff a lot faster than you'll do in 5 or 10 years.
>>
>>15868716

Turning 32 this year so I will be " That guy " always wishy washy with careers, so basically just have some rental properties and amazon paying the bills.

Cheapest Firebird I could find is 6K for a non-running, non rego'd autotragic.
http://ww3.autoscout24.nl/classified/293296053?asrc=st|as
Any other Poncho is 12K EUR.

Cheapest automatic Camaro? 12K. Next on in the list is 23K.
http://ww3.autoscout24.nl/classified/289424853?asrc=st|as

And don't get me started on Mustangs. A V6 Mustang 2 is 6K.
http://occasions.autoscout24.nl/?atype=C&make=29&mmvco=1&model=2149&mmvmk0=29&mmvmd0=2149&fregfrom=1910&fregto=1975&cy=NL&ustate=N%2CU&sort=price&dtr=s

Meanwhile, 6K gets you the nicest Kadett possible, and 3K gets you a decent one.

I have a 2006 accord that has a chirp noise I can't identify. It started right after I swapped the starter motor (though I don't believe the 2 are related). The noise comes from the passenger side of the engine, happens every time I drive but is not always present while driving (as in it comes and goes) and it's driving me nuts. Its fairly quiet, just kinda sounds like an intermittent high pitched chirp. Doesnt seem to respond to rpm or anything else. My best guess is the serpentine belt tensioner. Any ideas guys?
>>
>>15869082
I would check the accessory belt and the pulleys on your accessories (A/C Condenser, P/S pump, alternator etc.) as you suggested, but if it's not that I'd check your cooling fan bearings first to troubleshoot it out of the way, then move on to your power steering pump and rack
it really could be anything

Have one of your parents cosign on a lease, provided you have a stable job. Otherwise, get a platinum buss pass. You're not going to get a car at $300, at least not one worth keeping. Save for a few more months. Bare minimum I'd say would be $1000.

you can maybe get something that needs work for a few hundred depending on how able you are, i was a mechanic for some time and only buy cheap used vehicles for myself. years ago i bought a 1988 Nissan KingCab pickup for a few hundred that was abandoned on a farm. put i think $100 of parts into it (belts, spark plugs/wires, thermostat) and daily drove the piss out of it for a few years. factoring in stuff i hauled for people in it, i made money owning it

Are "semi-automatic transmission" actually "semi" at all? Aren't they still an automatic transmission? The only difference is you can change the gears through paddle shifts making it "semi"?

>parents
>cosign
That's funny. They've run their credit so far into the ground a bank wouldn't loan them a penny. I'm basically the only person in my family with credit.

>Bus pass
I live 20 miles from anything resembling public transit. Far out in the boonies.

I do have a stable job. My problem is I spent all my money paying off debt in the same week my shitbox got broken beyond any form of fast or cost effective repair.

FWIW, I don't need something that will last a long time. It just needs to get me to work until I can save up enough money for something better.
>>
>>15870632
Yes. Depends completely on the transmission.
Look at it like this.
You have automatics as an overarching label, and then as a subset of autos you have semi-autos. And then you have a bunch of semi-auto transmission designs under that.

>>15870690
find someone who can loan you a car/carpool with someone
>>
>>15870698
All right. In the end, does manual still have the most power transfer?
>>
>>15870698
I've asked. The people I know just don't have spare cars sitting around. They're all commuting from the boonies to town, too.

And carpooling isn't an option because I work a different shift from most people. I've been bumming rides, but people get pissy about it even if I buy their gasoline.

Thanks anyway, Anon. You gave good suggestions. I've just tried them already.
>>
>>15870772
Yes, but as a DCT shill I feel compelled to tell you that only muh feels (and the fact that I like 90's shit for the most part) keeps me from driving only DCT.
Much more engaged driving experience when you go pure paddle shifters imo, less distractions.
Manual = pleasure
DCT = performance
for me anyway.

QTDDTOT how do I get rid of a vehicle with no title?

The last two times I stripped and salvaged a jeep I had to provide the title to the junkyard and salvage yard for each.

Now I'm looking at a jeep with no title with the intention of salvaging the I6, since I'm also looking at a jeep with a bad I6.

What I don't know is how to get rid of the titleless carcass when I'm done.

What do?

>>15871307
That's not too terribly bad, but with only $300 it could be difficult depending on the price of the vehicle and the stealership. I think it's doable. Doable doesn't necessarily mean favorable though.

it's an out of state buddy's jeep, and the guy's buddy lost it or he lost it or whatever. it's 3x removed in another state AT BEST, and after paying to have it reissued, then transferred, mandatory registration... time aside it would be like $200

so I was thinking about throwing him $300 and removing his problem. I'm not going to even fuck with trying to get it titled or anything.
>>
>>15871539
>hasn't got it registered in his name yet

they don't ever title them. it just creates a paper trail that would require a dealer license in some states and is a waste of fucking money since he is only doing it to sell.

the question is how do you know it was minor damage? I mean you'll probably be fine, but pay to check the frame true and alignment before buying. guy shouldn't mind you taking it to a shop you've prearranged with... and take it to your own fucking shop, don't take his paperwork as evidence
>>
>>15871541
Oh. Those things cost money. Never had to do it but not sure why I'm surprised either.

Dump it in a random location. If it's not tied to you or your buddy's name then you ought to be good. If the state finds it, they'll take care of it and I don't think anything would come back to you.
Honestly the only thing I can think of besides talking to your DMV what you can do with it or seeing if you can find a junkyard that will take it despite no title.

I'm looking for a cheap car.

A friend of my Dad's told me over the phone that one of his family (bro or cousin, can't remember) was preparing to sell a 2004 Pontiac Sunfire for $2500, with 60,000 miles on the engine and about 120k on the body. The conversation was short, so I don't really know any other details about it.

He told me it's not quite ready for sale just yet, but should be in a few days. Plan on looking into it then.

So far, yay or nay? I'm a poorfag, so 2500 is slightly overbudget for me. But I'll glady pay that much if it's a good, reliable ride.

V-Tec is Honda's term for variable cam timing. When "V-Tec kicks in, yo" the ecm is modifying the cam timing through either phasers or solenoids to change when/how much the valves open and close to give you better power at the top end or sometimes to give better economy when cruising around the city

VTEC is Honda's variable valve lift system (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control). It basically lets the computer decide between two cam profiles, one high (for power), one low (for economy), depending on a load of data, mostly engine RPM. This basically creates two powerbands, one high, one low, and two distintly different engine characters.

Modern i-VTEC also does cam phasing, so when the valve events happen (fully independent from intake and exhaust by the way), this further improves power and economy, broadens the powerband, and makes the engine better.

Honda did the branding very well, so VTEC is well-known, but most other engine manufacturers have their take on variable valve timing (VVT and lift (VVL) by now.

>>
>>15869544
I haven't done it but as a tire installer at crappy tire on ontario we do the inspections once the car has been cleared at the borders. Basically any car needs, hooks to attach a car seat too (unless a convertible), the odometer must have km/h amd m/h or digital and able to switch back and forth, a statement of compliance label, daytime running lights(master headlight switch must be in the off position and lights have to be on in the front) also a French label if the airbags require regular service

That's about it but daytime running lights usually cost about $315 parts and labour to install a module and it's the most common cause of a failure

Hello /o/, I'm partnering up with an insurance business. I'll be doing the claims for flooring and will be driving A LOT. I have a 2016 Silverado right now and don't want to rack miles or waste $$$ on that thing.

Any ideas on what to get?

>(or know that it is impossible) to mount engine from Renault Megane Scenic to Mazda Premacy?
It's possible, but it'd be a lot of work. The engine wasn't designed to fit there. You would have to make everything (mounts, computers, EVERYTHING). You'd be better of tuning the Premacy engine instead.

>Also: was my previous question really bad?
Yes.

>>15875570
Consider the following:
>Mazda3
>Honda Civic
>Hyundai Elantra
>Kia Forte
Just about any of these should have bluetooth, and most will probably have Carplay. MPG is generally pretty good, so your fees should cover your travel expenses.

Personally, I'd look at a Fiesta ST. A 2016 Platinum White one would be 21K, I think you might be able to nab one for 20, and it's amazing fun for the money. Actually,it's the best car to compliment that Silverado I can think of.

So once you ship it to a warehouse, people see it comes directly from amazon, then they almost always purchase that instead of garage guys stuff.

Theres a shit ton of videos if you want to get into it.

I honestly started with checking out clearance sales and library sales scanning stuff with the amazon application to see what it sold for online, if I was going to make $5 after everything, I would take it.

Why is it so hard to find a Mercedes Benz 190E with a manual transmission in the US?
>>
>>15876265
Because automatics have had a majority market share in the US since the 1950's, and automatics were sold in the majority of Benzes, even the W201, globally since soemwhere around the 1960''s iirc. Basically, it's the most automatic car in on of the most automatic countries. Even here in Yurop, manuals are a bitch to find on the 6 cilinder W201's, although easier to find on the base 4 bangers.
>>

>How hard would a manual conversion be? I've always wanted an E30 M3 and a 190E Evo, I'll settle for a replica evo if I can get 3 pedals.
Keep in mind most manual conversions won't get that delicious dogbox. Anyways, if you're ditching the automatic, you might as well put a proper 16v engine in there - something like an LS, or, more fittingly, a DaimlerChrysler Hemi.
All kidding aside, a tranny swap is hard, parts are hard to find in the US, but it's possible. It just leaves you with an underpowered car.

>Is maintenance particularly bad?
Maintenance is reasonably good, they'll take 200K miles without much problems. They're from before Merc went to shit, and lack a lot of electronics to go to said shit.

I just got this car, and its got 3 pedals, one of them stops, and one of them is the gas, but I can't figure out what the leftmost pedal is, I push it and nothing happens.

I know its got a few issues since the gas pedal doesn't make it go forwards, I assume the trans is gone out and I need a new one. I'll have my dad buy me one, and also the shifter doesn't have a D on it, so I have been putting it in 4 for 4wd but it doesn't seem to make it move.

Is it possible the pedal there is from the previous owners attempt to fix it that didn't work?
>>
>>15876254

>Zero gains without a tune.

Lies.

Less backpressure can help HP even without a tune, could probably help with response on a turbo car to boot. More backpressure can also help torque without a tune. Moving mufflers/resonators/baffles and shit around can change the pressure waves in the exhaust and either help or hurt both HP and torque depending on how it's set up, though really that's just more efficient exhaust scavenging. Moving the collectors forward or back, or just placing arbitrary restrictions in different places in the exhaust, can move the power band up or down without a tune, and can impact HP and torque without a tune.

>Cold Air Intake
>Zero gains.

This is true tho. Take the top off the air box and hold the filter down with wire mesh or something and you'll have about the best airflow possible, unless the factory intake is proper fucked.

Like on a 460 ford F-something truck, they have inverted cones in the intake piping to quiet down the air noise or something. Getting rid of those with a cold air intake, or just cutting them out, does actually help things. It's a rare case where a CAI will actually do anything useful though.

If your ECU does not adjust for the different exhaust flow, your engine won't make any more power, and it might even have the engine run a bit lean under heavy loads.

Nicely dropped, Volvo Pegasus R wheels (with AMG instead of R inscribed), completely black with all the DTM-riceyness, and then a 16v - an all aluminium 3rd gen DaimlerChrysler Hemi, backed by a Liberty/Jerico clutchless gearbox. Not sure on the displacement - either a 9000RPM Trans-am style 304, or a 426 to get those Mercedes-correct 6.9 liters.

>If your ECU does not adjust for the different exhaust flow, your engine won't make any more power, and it might even have the engine run a bit lean under heavy loads.

It doesn't have to adjust for shit though. All you're doing is decreasing the resistance to air flow at the exhaust valve. You're not going to lean an engine out by allowing the exhaust to flow more freely.

In the same general train of thought, that's why you don't need a tune for an exhaust - the engine doesn't particularly give a shit what happens after the exhaust valve as far as fueling and timing are concerned.

When I turn the key it doesn't turn over right away. I hear the starter (or starter solenoid?) make an audible CLICK every time I turn the key and eventually the engine turns over but it takes a few clicks.

Do i need to replace the whole starter or what?

>It doesn't have to adjust for shit though. All you're doing is decreasing the resistance to air flow at the exhaust valve. You're not going to lean an engine out by allowing the exhaust to flow more freely.

>More airflow
>Identical amount of fuel

And this is the important part -

>AFTER ALL COMBUSTION IS COMPLETE

As in, you have more air flow after the power cycle, during the exhaust stroke only, as a bigger exhaust doesn't impact air intake during the intake stroke.

The engine has absolutely no need whatsoever to add fuel to compensate for being able to exhaust burned gasses more quickly, unless you really just feel like running rich for no apparent reason and dumping fuel into your exhaust for the hell of it.

are you retarded?
the engine meters a specific amount of fuel in for each intake stroke that is based on the flow of air in and out of the engine that the computer thinks is there.
when you free up exhaust flow you increase scavenging in the cylinder resulting in lower pressure in it after the exhaust stroke causing it to draw in more air on the intake.

if you knew shit about engines you would know that every major change in airflow requires a tune to run properly.
self learning EFI somewhat excluded

Where is the best place to buy manufacturer emblems? My dad has a 2008 expedition and the ford emblem on his grille is looking really faded. I wanted to get him a new one for his birthday.

>when you free up exhaust flow you increase scavenging in the cylinder

Typically, the exact opposite happens when you install a bigger exhaust. The larger diameter decreases scavenging at lower RPM, which is why a lot of the time installing a bigger exhaust will result in having less torque lower down. Scavenging might increase at the upper RPM range, though depending on how over sized the exhaust is, it may still be negligible. Depends on the car really.

Even assuming the engine somehow managed to increase the amount of airflow into the cylinder due to an increase in exhaust size, the air flow sensor would detect the increased air flow and adjust the fuel trim accordingly. Same thing as what happens in winter driving vs summer driving - it detects a change in air density, and adjusts fuel accordingly. Same thing happens with air flow speed. This applies to just about any relatively modern car.

You're not going to increase airflow enough to get outside of factory fuel trim adjustments with just an exhaust, even if you just have header dumps. Getting a tune after doing an exhaust will accomplish absolutely nothing more than a tune alone.

yep you can do it. Clean your car and wipe with something to make sure the clearcoat is clean. measure and tape it off with masking tape, cover the rest with paper so no overspray. the more layers you do the better it will look and easier to peel.

to help it peel off easy you can run a card down the edge. you could even use a razor if you're confident you wont cut the clearcoat. I would say at least 3-4 layers would be good. practice on something first tho

I just bought an immaculate jeep Cherokee from some kid who was an idiot and owned it for like a month.

Everything is new or newer, hoses, belts, the tires still have blue on the lettering, the next to last owner obviously dressed it up and sold it to this idiot kid. And he obviously took immaculate care of it before that too.

So the mystery is in the middle of all this well cared for machinery is a new battery plunked in, not secured, surrounded by the remnants of corrosion and a battery boil over/explosion.

So none of the corrosion is cleaned, the pos terminal is practically hairy with it- but only the outside. Otherwise the terminal, like everything else looks nearly new.

So it looks like immaculate guy seeks jeep to kid, battery explodes, kid can barely put new battery in and doesn't even try to clean anything. The question is, what would make the battery fail?

I mean we have to assume immaculate guy didn't have some shitty 10yo battery leaking all over, yet it boils/spews all over and is ruined. In addition there is some evidence this happened to immaculate guy before because the corrosion on the battery tie down was pervasive and years thick under the rubberized coating. Obviously immaculate guy cleaned up where he could, but it still looks like a regular problem.

In any case what would cause this? Alternator overcharging the battery? How would I test this or tell?

Are there any SHO owners on here? I got an 89 today, and I'm not sure if I should run 87 or 93 octane. The owners manual doesn't say anything about what kind to use, but on the gas gauge it says premium unleaded only. Will running 87 hurt it in any way? I've tried google but the only results I'm getting are for the 2010+ SHO and that's not exactly the same car
>>
>>15886353
87 won't hurt anything. Basically run your tank out, fill with 87 and calculate gas mileage for two tanks. Then switch to 93 and repeat. All of my cars have enough improvement in mpg with high that it makes the high worth buying because I get more miles from the mpg than I would from 40¢ worth of low grade. If you switch to low and get knocking or pinging sitting the tank stop the test and top off with high grade.

Also grades vary by altitude so for example here it's 85,87,91. I think they call it regular, mid, and premium or something do you don't feel bad about using low grade. In any case it won't hurt your car to find out.
>>
>>15885856
Pick and pull you go walk around the yard with a screw driver or whatever, crawl into rusty hulks and get sepsis while trying to free some shitty mirror from a smashed windshield in a car with no seats. You then take your pile of trash to the counter and they tell you what it costs.

Other junkyards you go up to the counter and try to splain to josé what you need and are given the part like it's AutoZone. And they charge you like is a dealer.

Experience and cost will vary widely by junkyard depending on how cool the people are there. I don't have any decent junkyards here but I used to go and just wander around a pick n pull looking for interesting shit when I was younger. Calling and asking about your mirror in advance will give you a pretty good idea what your experience and cost will be- you can also say "I called and they said it would be $10 not 20" or keep your mouth shut if they want $5

Personally I'd just eBay the shit but then I've already got sepsis.

hopefully one of your pads is just stuck in the caliper housing; unstick it, get some brake grease on the piston and back of the pad and reassemble
It could also be that the brake adjuster has adjusted too much or your piston is frozen in the out position; this will be tough and will probably mean you need to rebuild or replace the caliper.
