Redpill me on the Boxer engine, particularly of the Subaru variety.

The pistons go <----->
the 2.5l ones run on headgaskets
>>15856829
It costs a lot more for the same power.
>>15856849
That's their main issue, you have to spend big to make any decent power

>>15856840
Any other specific issues like this? Particularly for the EJ22?
>>15856829
The EJ25 is notorious for burning away its cheap, paper head gaskets. After rebuilding mine with aluminum gaskets that problem is long gone
They're not the most efficient but I like the lower center of gravity and the reduced overall vibrations
Subaru's newer engines can idle for like 5 days straight. The H4 is so much more efficient at idle than any other car. That's a random not particularly useful feature though.
They sound good.
And depsite the jealous evo fag, you can make pretty good power on the low compression FA20 or most EJs.

I forgot to add you can make good power but without spending a ton.
>>15856829
>Good sound
>Good torque
>EJ engines make pretty easy power up to about 350 - 400hp
>some subaru gearboxes are pretty weak
>Pretty reliable
>Fuel consumption isn't great
>Can't usually remap the stock ecu so you have to pay for a piggy back one
>spark plug change is a pain if you dont have the right combo of extensions and sockets
Best thing about the boxer is that factory five will sell you a kit car to put an ej in the back of
>>15856840
This is the older engines, newer ones hardly have this issue.
>>15856829
really good power, more it costs more to make than say an inline four.
>>15858272
What gearbox do these use?
>>15858292
normal wrx/sti gearbox, pretty sure its rwd only though
>>15858303
Strange that they'd use an AWD transmission for that, then.
>>15858314
they just pull power from the center diff so they don't have to use an engine or gearbox from a fwd car. it's fairly clever to be honest
>>15858329
I wonder if you could adapt them for a Porsche or Audi transmission, that'd open up some interesting possibilities.
>>15857949
i believe the ej22 isn't affected by the HG issue
>>15858479
Sure, but a ready to go Porsche transaxle is going to set you back almost as much as an entire donor Subaru.
>>15858851
Might be able to get a wrecked Boxster for cheap, or snap up an Audi transmission that's nearly identical.
I'd love to see an 818 powered by an Audi inline 5 turbo or something.
