What is with the threads dying at a time when so many new BMWs are coming to /o/? It's like everyone got tired of quality threads and just wants to shitpost.

I haven't been around much the past couple weeks but I normally bump the threads when they're near the bottom of the board. At least when there are discussions there is actual discourse and not just mainly flame wars. A good balance between the general cancer of yotsuba and the chemo of forums, so it is good to keep the threads going regardless.

!@#$%^&*()

And seeing all the e36s around here now, if anyone is planning to get a LTW splitter, DO NOT buy the replica on eBay, from Bulgaria or wherever. I did when the Genuine one was on backorder, and it was trash that broke in a couple days after its first scrape (and I was on stock suspension then). The real one is a tank, I just need to sand or paint it a bit to match the trim a bit better.
>>
dedthred. Anyway I'm pretty much committed to buying an N55 335i (M-sport, coupe and manual because these would be important variables) but I have one final question; how well do they hold value?
>>
>>15857318
Also E92, forgot the F30 335i had the N55 for a while.
>>
>>15857318
>>15857327
Also from my understanding lower models are common and worthless, M3s given their reputation for being moneypits and beat on also depreciate harder than a woman's sexual value with time.

about to paint my e30 rear trunk lid spoiler/lip. then install it.

so should I trust the studs on the spoiler already there? they're like 6mm iirc. i've got the template with measurements so I'm not worried about that too much other than i will be drilling my car

Can I just dremel them off and use a double sided 3m automotive exterior tape after really cleaning the surface? I see a lot of video guides with spoilers that use that same stuff
>>
>>15857918
Yeah, double sided tape should hold it on fine so long as you have a clean, flat surface on both sides to mate the tape to.

Make sure it's 3m though. Skimping on that shit is dumb; it's only like $1 more than the off-brand, but not using it will likely lead to your spoiler falling off.
>>
>>15857952
yeah it's the 3m stuff 'super strength molding tape'
I have 2x 1/2" x 5ft roll
>>
>>15857918
Yeah with a lip spoiler well done tape is all you really need.

What's a decent price to pay for a 325ix? Any year is fine, would prefer something not red or white. I've been wanting one for a while now, and when I see them posted (if ever), the prices range anywhere from $3000-8000. The mileage is never around the same ballpark as others, with higher mileage ones usually being more expensive.

I live in the Pacific Northwest.

Here are two clean options.
http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/cto/5775265094.html
http://portland.craigslist.org/wsc/cto/5767621007.html

Why do you not like red? I can see white at the age of an e30 looking bad, but red holds it colour very well through the years.
>>
Well I bought a cheap z3 coupe, all good for a week and now it's throwing p0505. Currently at the shop getting tested for vac leaks.

Right away mechanic noticed hole in intake tube behind MAF.

Pray for me /o/
>>
hi friends :^)

had to swing my m3 back to the shop after an alignment for some weird vibrations

all is gut
>>
>>15858289
I was wondering why I hadn't seen the first listing before, but I realized it's because I only ever have the search option set for manual transmissions. I might consider if a manual swap isn't that hard down the road.

The second link I've been heavily considering honestly because I look at it daily. Is $5000 a good price? I'm absolutely shit at haggling, and I've read through what to look for when looking at an e30.

To answer your question, I don't have anything against the color red really. It's just never been my preferred color on a car. I'm more inclined to buy either darker blues or silvers.

Outside of Japanese cars and my 190e, BMW is mostly foreign territory for me.

Thanks for the help.
>>
>>15858481
Well one of the biggest things to look for, especially in the PNW, is rust, and the silver one doesn't have it. I'd bet the same for the red, given how pristine the interior and exterior look.

As for price, I may not be the best person to evaluate as I've never had an e30, but for something somewhat rare, in excellent condition at almost 30 years of age, I think five grand is reasonable. Mechanical condition plays into that as well, and they both look like they've had caring owners.

>>15858423
Just going to throw it in there, but the wheels would look dope colour-matched to the smokey red of the taillamps.

Black sapphire? You don't see many black e46s around. Nice.

>>15858395
Just JB Weld that hole. It isn't under much pressure.
>>

Picked up my car today from hail damage after 1.5 months. They decided that it was a 328i and got into an argument that it is an Xi. After an argument (with me showing them the damn sill tag that it is an Xi,) I walk around the car and realize they removed all of the XDrive badging. Lost my shit and left. Oh and they decided not to install the rear spoiler, (found that in the trunk.) Installing that myself. Collision shops are fucking criminals and lazy as hell. Paint is gorgeous tho....

Amazingly the only other damage was to the front bumper and the tray under the engine.

How good is am e36 coupe? I.m considering buying one next year and rwd car options are very limited here.
Currently driving a skoda octavia tour 1.9tdi (eurotrash). If I buy a 325 e36 how much am I gonna spend to keep it on the road. Will mostly drive it for pleasure and maybe on a 200 km commute every now and then.
>>
>>15865216

I average about 2000k Canadabucks a year, but I also buy new tires every year and refresh a lot of suspension stuff.

I also tackle one large project a year. Last year I did the rear end, this year the front end, etc.

If you're handy and not too particular you could own one very cheaply. If you're very picky like me, keep some cash around just in case.

Original rads were prone to degrading if non BMW coolant was used, expansion tanks are known for blowing up.

I dropped my subframe on my E36 M3. Doing oil pan baffle/reinforced pickup, reinforced front subframe, motor mounts, and LCA balljoints/bushings/tierod assemblies

-Inner balljoints wouldn't "separate" and ball joint popper won't fit nor smacking it with a hammer. Gonna try a pickle fork tomorrow.

-Everything made out of rubber was falling the fuck apart and original with 96/97 date codes. Lollipop bushings were tearing, balljoint boots all torn, motor mounts cracking, every joint was floppy and gave no resistance, Aren't 20 year old BMWs the best?

-I had a bunch of grime from leaking PS hoses, especially around the PS reservoir and return pipe/cooling coil. I'm gonna try to tighten the fittings at the reservoir a bit and see what happens but I wouldn't doubt if the hoses are shot at the "clamps"

-What's the best way to check if a rack is good or not? I'd get a Z3 rack but they're all going for $300+.

Width difference on the fronts.

Ran 245 Bridgestone RE 050A Scuderia and went to 255 S04 Pole Position.

I had a 245/285 setup and had DSC issues even when you didn't push.

The 255/285 is back normal now. No more DSC probs through, and hard out of corners.

Much, much more stable front end as well. The car goes where you point the wheels, with a lot more tire chatter though compared to the 050A's.

It's not gonna be any worse than a E46 (dirt cheap parts, rarely has VANOS issues, no subframe tearing) but I'd refuse to daily one, just because it's older and more likely to get beat.

>>
>>15885002
>Maintenance of a E36 M3 comparable to a 330i?

Similarities:

Both have structural tearouts when abused (E36: Rear shock towers, rear subframe depending on month produced, if its a 1995 built after 6/94 it'll be fine, E46: Rear subframe)

Both have crappy cooling systems (pressurized expansion tanks, mechanical clutch fans that can fail and send bits of high speed plastic into the radiator/hoses, plastic water pump impellers and crap pump bearings)

Both will have rubber literally everywhere in the suspension that when it wears out the car drives like crap (BMW likes using the crappiest rubber possible, but also puts it everywhere to maintain ride comfort and good handling) and leaks everywhere

Both will likely be leaking oil in some way (oil filter housing, valve cover gasket, PS hoses)

Both will try to unbolt their oil pump gears when you race it (E36s are known more for this because of the M3s having a 6750rpm redline + frequently tracked, but M54s in the 330is get it worse due to harmonic issues making it vibrate apart).

Differences:

1995 vs 2002-2005. E46 is a 7-10 year newer car.

Single VANOS that when it fails will only lead to a rattling noise and loss of low end torque vs Double VANOS that when it fails will give CELs

E36 will have a WAY shittier interior. By far. Headliner falls apart, door panels come apart and have to get reglued, more rattles/squeaks, seat motor gears break. Its a older car

E36 will also be way more fun to drive at all speeds. LSD vs Open Diff, 150-200lbs lighter, More responsive and nimble feel. Its BMW when they were the "Ultimate Driving Machines" you can't compare it to a non-M chassis. I wouldn't bother owning a BMW if it wasn't a M car, honestly.

From my experience, ///M Tax only applies on aftermarket parts and special ///M parts. Namely control arms, hubs, and in-demand interior parts (think Vader seats). Most of the parts I've bought for mine were shared with regular E36s and they were pretty cheap.
>>
>>15885586
awesome man, thank you for the breakdown
>>
>>15885586
http://ventura.craigslist.org/cto/5797736431.html

This could be nice too, its rough though. Prep it and get it repainted, then get the seats recovered. Put a little bit of effort into restoring it, and its a $10k car minimum just from the mileage and color combo alone (Boston Green/Modena).

And like I said. I wouldn't bother owning a non-M BMW. If I had to choose between a $6-8k 330i E46 (ZHPs not included, those are factory Alpina tuned cars and have a different interior/cams/exhaust/tune/6 speed gearbox) and a G35/350Z/IS300 I'd go for the Japanese equivalent that'd drive 90% as well.

I also wouldn't rely on a 20 year old BMW as reliable transportation, lol.
>>
>>15885586
And forgot to mention, all the flaws I mentioned? Fixable. BMWs have a HUGE aftermarket and once you fix them they'll be good for the life of the car (or at least 7-10+ years). Even the oil pump nut (drop the pan and safety wire it) and structural tearouts.

Are bimmers even worth the money as terms of appliance? They seem as huge badge pieces at this point.

I do love what they offer, Inline 6, manual, RWD and non shit handling.

They offer everything what I want in a car but I think they're just too unreliable. My friend had a E30 and E36 that gave him nothing but trouble. Granted the E36 was all transmission problems

What should I look for in a E36? What are signs of a reliable Daily?
>>
>>15889510
Here's my reasoning for my non-m rankings
E30 #1: It's the peak of the 3 series, the cars are lightweight, very reliable, very well made and look great
E46 #2: It's better than the E36 without the fat and watering down of the E90 and F30.
E90 #3: It's watered down vs the E46, but not as bastardized and disappointing as the F30.
F30 #4: They're faster, but they're also fat and ugly, they're the proof that BMW is no longer anything like "ultimate driving machine" plus the 328 is a 2L 4, the 340 is a 3L 6, this naming convention shit is asinine
E21 #5: They're great to look at, but they're the first 3 series and aside from being solid cars are unremarkable in every way
E36 #6: They're the lowest quality 3 series BMW ever made. The interiors are ugly and fall apart and the engines are completely yawn-inducing
>>
>>15889466
>>15889500
>>15889535

Quite meaningless rankings, as nobody is placing these cars in their own contexts. Which cars were more successful compared to others for their time?

E30 and E36 really did beat their competition and were the aspirational vehicles of the era, and are still used widely in rallye and hillclimb today, along with numerous clubs and drifters and street racers: all of varying degrees of properness, but all know which are the best platforms. But young eyed people see them as unimpressive and lame.

As we go on to later models, where is the success? Technology only comes with time, so has it been applied? Where are the poster cars of the past decade? Certainly not featuring the BMW.
>>
>>15889662
>Which cars were more successful compared to others for their time?
Doesn't matter, it's a subjective power ranking
>>
>>15889535
Regarding the E90, it traded some of muh precision handling (although some disagree) for power and overall significant improvements in quality. It went from a comfy sports-esque car to a luxury muscle car, so to speak and I can excuse that. Conversely the F30 is where it really did get "watered down"

>E30 #1: It's the peak of the 3 series, the cars are lightweight, very reliable, very well made and look great
I think you meant to type E46
>E21 #5: They're great to look at, but they're the first 3 series and aside from being solid cars are unremarkable in every way

>E36 #6: They're the lowest quality 3 series BMW ever made. The interiors are ugly and fall apart and the engines are completely yawn-inducing
And meant E21,

Honestly your entire post just reads of an E30 owner who's driven no other 3 series
>>
>>15890864
>I think you meant to type E46
No. The E46 is a great M3 but the regular 3 series is pretty dull aside from the ZHP. It's a "nice car" like the E90, but it's uninspiring.

>And meant E30
You're a moron if you think the E30 is unremarkable. It was the top of its class and is still one of the best lightweight performance build platforms. Try and find another decent RWD coupe or sedan that weighs under 3,000lbs bone stock.

>And meant E21,
Nope, I have an E36 M3, I've been around regular E36s plenty, they are of so much lower in quality than the E30 and E46 it's crazy. The only reason I still have the E36 M3 is that it's bone stock, in good shape, and I got it cheap when they were at rock bottom prices, I'm going to hang on to it until they increase in value a little more while I focus on modding the other cars.

>Honestly your entire post just reads of an E30 owner who's driven no other 3 series

M3 LTW/GT didn't have any other additional aero than the LTW/GT wing, which, without the risers installed, is comparable in height to the High Arch wing, which I have. Main difference is arch vs squared, plus the base on the LTW/GT.

And the LTW/GT honestly did not do much for aero either compared to a real performance wing, but it was made for racing homogolation in mind. So I'd wager that my car, being closer to the ground, is doing better aerodynamically than a stock height with the LTW/GT wing.

And you may ask, why do people want a wing that does so little? Cause it is damn sexy, risers or not.

VQ35HR has 311 hp stock. 330 at the crank seems pretty reasonable with intake/exhaust mods.

You have a better suspension, though. And BMW typically gives very conservative power estimates, so you might be closer to his claimed power output than you think.

Yeah lots. Research INPA so you can read and clear your error codes. Get the INPA cable from the ebay. Then start doing basic maintenance (oil changes) etc, watch youtube videos.

www youtube com/user/nathan780409

this is for e46 and e39 mainly, but it's not exactly the basics. This guy is good to (E46).

Would I be better off paying for a E46 M3 rather than a E36 M3?

I'm not sure if I'm willing to shell out 20k for a E46.

Which is more reliable?
>>
>>15901210
Well with e36 it seems most issues come from lack of regular maintenance.

You can get a decent e46 M3 in my area for $15-16k. Decent e36 M3 for 10-12k.

If you like e36 design better but are worried about chasing numbers, S52 loves FI. Stock it will still throw you back in the seat regardless.

But if you want reliability, stay NA.

Shop forgot a bolt when doing the brakes on my old M3. A week later, just having put new tyres on it that morning, I'm leaving college and go over a speedbump.

Suddenly, my car jolts to a stop. Won't accelerate, I have no clue what is going wrong. Campus police are stumped too, my car is stopped in the middle of the road and won't budge. Shortly before the tow gets there, I see the caliper off keel jammed into the wheel. Dragged onto the flatbed.

At least they replaced the caliper etc for free, but I've been weary of shops since, even though that place was my usual spot, friendly guys and all.

Could be anything. Hit the rear shock mounts with silicone spray lube and see if the noise goes away. If it does you found your culprit. If it doesn't, move onto the bottom shock bushing. When's the last time you did your trailing arm bushings?

How does the S2K compare to the E36 M3? As a person who considered both then went for the M3 with the logic that the extra money I'll save I'll spend fixing up the M3.
>>
>>15902125
>How does the S2K compare to the E36 M3?
My S2000 isn't stock like the M3, but I have driven a stock one. The M3 has mid range that the S2000 lacks, so it feels faster in a straight line. I prefer the S2000's handling though. Turn-in is sharper, steering feel is better, transitions are good with both, just different, the M3 transfers weight slower. The M3 is more predictable and is more stable at the limit, the S2000 is more on edge and abrupt, I don't think it's the tires. Both will spin on you if you let off. The E36 M3 has a great chassis but it is let down by the crap engine. You can make almost as much power as a euro M3 if you spend $2,000 on cams, tuning, etc, you're better off with a supercharger or turbo though. Heck you're better off with an LS1 than a US market S52.

I originally planned to turbo the M3 but instead I kept it stock, cleaned it up and fixed the vanos, that's it. I'll sell it and buy an E30 sedan some day to turbo.

Trailing arm bushes were done at the same time. And they are probably the culprit.

I'm fucking stupid, I just went to the Turner website to see which ones I bought, and "Delrin is a near solid bushing that does not absorb or dampen vibration or impact harshness. Therefore, we only recommend these for track-spec cars or street cars and drivers with more tolerance for noise, vibration, and harshness."

So I'm pretty sure that's the issue right there. Thanks for the help!

Fellow iXer here, Ive been through 3 or so now including a full build from scratch, stoker, turbo, the werks. If its your first e30 for the love of all gods chariots find a shitty one with minimal rust for less than 3k. Fix it up then sell. Their prices are slowly going up. Well...a 240Z doesn't have a straight 6 so that narrows that down. In b4 RB26 swap, sure, put 600lbs of engine in the front of a car that came with a 400lb engine, good idea.

Was seriously considering an E36 M3 sedan, think y'all convinced me otherwise, looking for a solid do it all car that's totally normal M-F, good for long trips, but can put a smile on my face on the weekend autox/HPDE.

I'm seriously tempted by an E34 M5, every once in awhile one pops up for ~$10k needing list of parts with a $5k shop bill attached that I can't imagine takes more than a weekend or two and about $2k.

Get a rag and check. If its red/black and smells like ATF its coming from the overflow on top of the transmission (assuming its a ZF 5 speed) or shift selector seal (where the small linkage rod). If its not its probably your valve cover gaskets.

>>15923225
I just bitched at you for wanting to get a E36 M3

A E34 M5 is a even worse idea. The parts on all these cars are cheap (except for ///M-specific parts which a M5 has WAY WAY MORE of than a E36 M3). Its the time that kills you, you have to put a $$ value on your time working on a car. Its why the difference between a $6k one and a $12k one is $1-2000 in parts and $3000+ in labor/time. And on top of that you want to drive a 20-25 year old car in the winter exposing it to even more salt/rust? Fuck no. It'll get ruined.

That's why you don't buy one without a second shitbox you can putt around in when your car's on jackstands for a few days.

>a solid do it all car

You take that money, put it on a downpayment for a pre-owned FRS/BRZ or a Fiesta ST, or you suck it up and get a $1000 shitbox and a project. Or you take your parents car/public transit/bicycle when it breaks.
>>
>>15923298
>Aww, you're cute.

>Implying that replacing dampers is more than a 2 hour job and $800 in parts and the shop charging $2k for it isn't a ripoff.

I mean, I know I'm hopelessly optimistic but I don't think I'm that stupid. Not trying to handwave away an engine rebuild, it's stuff like bushings and fluid flushes and replacement parts here and there.

A lot of seemingly regular parts for the early M5s are stupid expensive for the car, even without a proper shop. But, yeah, of course, bushings, fluids and shit is fine.
The only thing that's worse in parts are the earlier BMW AWD models.

>>
>>15923375
Oh okay then, go for it bro. Just watch for rust anyways (rockers/doors, especially doors from the inside out). What makes M5s expensive IIRC is their valve adjustments and self-levelling hydraulic rear suspensions. And of course like every 10+ year old BMW anything involving rubber/plastic (which it'll have a ton of).

E36 M3s are pretty damn good, but you'll find it very similar to your FRS.

yes if you are very resourceful and can diy just about anything. the sound and power and simplicity of the engine is a good fit for turbos. sure you can buy a bolt on turbo kit for $2-3k but that shits expensive. $1-1.5k can get you a partially ebay kit with a legit turbo and you might be able to squeeze in a megasquirt, but probably cheaper to do a manual boost controller, wideband, fmu etc ghetto way. I personally fell in love with the idea of turboing my e30 after looking into the kamotors guy on youtube

If I was going to engine swap my e30 I feel like I wouldn't like anything less than an s52, m60, 1uz, 2jz etc. Super fucking expensive. M50 is okay but everyone says go m52b28 which I think I could settle for. Not sure how the wiring goes and how complicated it gets, but both turbo and m50/m52 swaps are well documented.

I'm want to get a BMW that's a coupe and manual.

I'm thinking about getting the older BMW(late 1990s/early 2000s), should I get a 3 series or 5 series?
>>
>>15929639
If you value sportiness get a 3 series, if luxury then a 5
>>
>>15925710
Yes. M20s are strong engines and very well suited for boost. Don't fall for the M50 meme, an M50 is heavier than a turbo M20 and unless you're going for stupid turbo power there is no benefit to the M50 vs the M20 if both are boosted.

Swapping the rack in my '97 E36 M3 w/136k miles and changing out the leaky hoses, what else am I missing? I'm gonna keep the original high pressure PS line since it seems fine, but the ones going to/from the reservoir are leaking.

What was wrong with it?

>>15929639
If you want classy get an E34. You rarely see nice ones around.

If you can't find an answer here then make a thread for more attention. It is the most logical procedure. Or better yet, go to Bimmerforums and you'll have 10 answers in a day.

How is the interior on those?

DECENTLY clean example...

Picked up a Z3 rack >>15920985 and already have new tierod assemblies and boots.

Also have the low pressure hoses leaking (to/from reservoir, normal for E36s from the crimps they used). Just wondering what else should I pick up now before I'm running to the dealer and paying 5X what it usually costs.

I never understood why a higher end vehicle would have something so utilitarian on it that detracts from the design. Who really needs to clean their headlamps so badly on the go?
>>
>>15931410
I'm assuming that makes it more precise being linear? But what does the number being lower mean? Less turns to lock?

Why did you choose this over other options?
>>
>>15931472
Less turns to lock + very slightly more effort to turn + better feel due to being linear (turns the same at every point while turning the wheel).

Only other options would be the 330i ZHP rack, which is a tiny bit quicker but the Z3 rack has a small amount less of a "overboosted" feel

why are you maintaining your bmw in the same way I maintained my field truck
