Here's the thing. AE86 used to be a cheap, fun, entry level japanese tuner. Today, they're still fun and entry level, but they're becoming so sparse that they are no longer cheap. Parts are also sparse.

The main draw of the 86 was it's price point. There are better options today for a similar experience and at a cheaper price. It's up to you if the meme tax is worth it. I'm not going to deny their appeal and street cred.

Personally, it wasn't worth it to me so I picked up a car that's faster, handles better, is more reliable, has more aftermarket, and just as fun. It's called a miata

Note: miatas can't drift like the hachiroku can so if drifting is your main thing, miata isn't the right choice

They are fun. I have one with a couple of mods and it's a blast on the twisties.
Are they overhyped? Definitely. There's many cars that are a lot cheaper for greater performance.
Do I regret spending too much money on a 30 year old RWD Corolla? Hell no, this is the car that fits me perfectly.

If not half of your reasons for getting one of these are "It's an AE86", this is nothing for you. There's a ton of cheaper options that are cheap, lightweight, tunable, good looking, reliable and RWD.
