>EcoTEC when?
Back in the Cavalier days in the late 90's when they had EcoTec 2.4 liter engine options. Even the 2016 Malibu Limited has a 2.5L normally aspirated EcoTec engine.

The cavalier didn't have ecotec until 02 and it was a 2.2, at least in the US. I'm not sure what the Canadian 03+ z24 had. My understanding is it's just a rebadged LS.
In the mid 90s in the land of opel.
Mostly a marketing thing as they also put it onto the 2.0 turbos and the shitty pig heavy 2.5 v6 we got.

10 years ago? My mom had a shitty 2006 Opel with a 1.3L "Ecotec".
About 13 years ago, OP
I have an "ecotec" on my "Saturn" Astra XR 2008, it's comfy

Since the greatest amount of engine wear occurs when engines start up, doesn't EcoTec mean the engines wear out sooner as they get a LOT MORE stop and start cycles each day?

That's not what ecotec is.

Opel/Ecotec team does make fairly good but not-advanced engines

Ecotec has been in cars since the Corsa B.
First ones were unreliable as shit.
