So i'm in the market for something to live in since my lease is about to end and i've settled on this 1977 Chevy cobra with 70k miles on a 350 motor in auto.

Anyone with any sort of experience with campers or vans along with this engine?

Be prepared for 13 mpg. Also, where are you gonna park it?

The biggest thing to look out for on old motor homes like that is leaky roofs. If you don't have to tarp it now, you will have to in the next couple of years. Roof replacement/patching can cost more than the motor home is worth.

The 350 is a solid engine, and they're so common that replacement rebuilt units are basically a commodity item - rebuilt long blocks can be had for around $1000. It's rare to have any kind of failure in the rotating assembly, but heavy wear of the cam/lifters is kind of a small-block-chevy hallmark and common end-of-life failure point.
At 70,000 miles hauling the motor home around, it's probably started burning oil, but it's thirst has not yet gotten excessive. Old flat-tappet 350's can usually go at least 150,000 miles between rebuilds if maintenance is kept up. Lots of life left in it.
The spring on the carburetor secondary air door tends to wear out, causing a bog or hesitation if you floor it suddenly, that can be solved with an adjustment of the tension, but most people just learn to deal with it and ease into the throttle so as not to provoke the bog.
In this, the 350 should be bolted to a TH400 transmission, which is utterly reliable.

lol if he's lucky. With a low-compression truck 350, a 3-speed auto, and hill-climbing gears, he'll be lucky to hit 9 MPG. Be happy it doesn't have 454 or 460 power, or he'd be looking at 5 MPG.

You do not use one of these as primary transportation. You just drive it as little as possible.

I plan on parking it either in front of my bros house, a walmart parking lot, or somewhere in the middle of the desert.

thanks, my man! very useful info that i will keep in mind when I go to look at it. and the ad says that the roof was replaced along with the roof a/c so i might have been saved on that one. The seller is asking 3500 for it, how much should i offer, cash? Seems like it has been maintained well by the ad and a good amount of basic work has been done under the hood like belts and such. also, stoves and water pipers all work as well according to the ad and it has been given the approval of a mechanic.

4,999 Euros seems a bit steep for a 40 year old motorhome. I see them on CL all the time for around $2000 USD.

Hey OP,

I lived in a RV for 2 years. That cobra looks pretty good if it's not rusty.

The 350 is going to be low compression because it's a stock 1977 but it'll still pull it around. Probably one of the most common engines with a huge aftermarket. That 70k is all highway miles so it should be quite strong.

I'd just recommend getting a gym membership. Shower at the gym in the mornings instead of trying to conserve water in your tiny bathroom in there. Use the bathroom at shops and the such as much as possible too so you don't have to frequently dump the tank.

Find an abandoned parking lot to park in and have a bicycle for short trips so you don't need need to drive your rv everywhere. It's not great for parking and draws attention.

If you can afford a cell plan with unlimited data you can use that as a wireless internet source for a laptop, otherwise sit in coffee shops or places that offer free internet.

Finally, get diagnosed for a mental disability. Severe depression is a good one to go with. Go in, get medication and then apply for disability from the government. Set up a PO box to pick up the cheques.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the input as well, my friend. I actually have a membership already to a 24hr gym and i was thinking about how hard it would be to only use the the toilet and shower in emergencies.

And i have other vehicles to use. I plan on keeping my rig as stationary as possible.

Also whats the point of applying for disability?
