Just as with medicine where human bodies are repaired, autobody shops lack competition. In medicine, the medical profession prohibits advertising, competing for lower rates, and various other normal features of an open market system. That maintains both exclusivity and high profits.

If insurance companies were able to run their own body shops, then you'd see prices come way down. The insurance rates for body repair would be decreased in return for full coverage at the insurance bodyshop or a small copay would be required to go to more expensive shops. The more expensive the shop, the bigger the copay.

Paint material and methods changed. Cars aren't really painted plain colors either, a lot are a metallic or a pearl or some multi stage process that won't match the first try.

If the job is the whole car, time and prep work add a lot. You can get it cheap(er), but you'll be sorry sooner or later.
