I am a new driver who lives in the mountains, I want to practice driving up in the passes but I am wondering how dangerous it is for a novice. Any tips for staying out of trouble?

Do it late of a night time and don't turn your high beams on so you can see cars coming.
other than that don't go faster than you know you can go around a corner, always make slow progress with going faster around a certain corner don't try to take huge leaps.

Uhhhh, automatic Toyota camry.... It belonged to a relative, it's a good first car though. I might buy something better suited for mountain driving after a while, preferably with a manual transmission

Slow down if you cannot see far ahead, at crests or turning around trees. Watch for animals jumping out. Maybe pot holes too.
