My dad wasn't the salesman, he works in parts. The dealer made an exception for an employee, which is not uncommon. We actually got my car the same way through the same dealer, for $1800.

The only things wrong with it were that the A/C didn't work and it needed a battery, which I already fixed. Only needed the little A/C relay, popped a new one in and it worked.

Most dealers will wholesale off trade ins that are too old to get much for even if they're fine, it's an 07. If you look at their website the oldest used Honda they have is a 2013. My subaru had nothing wrong with it when we bought it, it was just too old.
