What buy? The Sierra is the most loaded, and cheapest ($31k). I haven't test driven it yet. The XLT is the most plain and expensive, but I've only heard good things about it. The Tundra is in between the two, and was much more comfortable to drive than the XLT but it's arguably a bit uglier.

Exhaust anon here.
Here's the piece that rusted to shit.

Since now I'm tasked with rebuilding my exhaust system I'm considering various options, will skipping one muffler increase the sound/emissions 50%? I'm considering only installing one and using a friends steel workshop and order the remaining pipe.

Also I know jack shit about mufflers, wich one / ones should I buy from pic related?

I kinda like the sound my engine gives off running with my exhaust cut in half but I don't want to be a dick to everybody on the streets.

By running straight center pipe you will pronably get a fair amount of droning between 50-70kph. Stick a resonator in its place to fix this.

If you delete the rear muffler you will experience droning at most speeds. Ask your local exhaust man which one produces best results for your shitbox.

Sucks that There is litteraly no one on my god damn island that does exhausts.
Droning is just plain noise right? I don't mind it every now and then, I just don't want my car revving reverberating off everybody's windows.

My car has a resonator at the begining of the tube.

My car is a Citroen BX, ATM I'm considering of only running the end muffler + a second resonator where the middle muffer used to be

Anonymous 09/01/16(Thu)00:40:28 No.15733743â–¶
Ok lads looking for some input on a new car - no more than £10k but if cheaper that's better;

>small hatchback/small coupe
>fastest 0-60mph possible + handling decent enough
>2010 or newer - newest preferred
>reliable enough

Any suggestions?
>>
>>
>>15733713
Like everything, you learn by doing it. I recommend watching EngineeringExplained on youtube and watch all the seasons of top gear (season 2+, S1 doesnt have james may). You'll be surprised how much you pick up just by hearing people talk about stuff
>>
>>15733443
Steel is stronger than aluminum, but clever design of aluminum alloys provide just as much strength without the added weight. Aluminum is inherently more expensive than steel and added design costs usually make it too expensive to replace on a car and some parts you want the sheer strength of steel regardless of weight. Frame pieces, crumple zones, seat brackets etc.
>>
>>15733936
Thanks for replying
>>
>>15732174
The muffler really shouldn't do anything to affect the smell of the exhaust. It just "muffles" your exhaust. So until you replace it, your car will just be noisier and maybe perform a little bit better because of no muffler, but that's it.
>>
>>15733930
With 10k, which is around 13k USD, you can get a nice subaru wrx. It probably won't be 2010+, but you could find an 06-07 in good condition for that price. You just have to be ready to foot the bill for all the repairs that the boyracer didn't fix before selling the car.
>>
>>15733835
I'm always hesitant to buy a car that was clearly crashed since you never know if the frame was tweaked. Not firing could be something simple, check to see if the plugs spark and work forward from there. You'll need around 2K for parts and paint. But to answer your question about the title, no, it shouldn't be titled as a civic.

Yeah I'm looking more for a light machine under £10k - WRX's will be older and harder to find clean, and it's a bit big as much as I like them.

Currently I'm thinking about getting a 2012 plate RX-8 for about £7.5k I've spotted at a local Mazda dealer.

But I like to make a list, so open to suggestions within those limits.

Mechanics fixing ac, depending on how many things they replace runs around 1000$. If you have a/c tools like the gauges, the vacuum pump and UV dye+light, you can fix it for just the cost of parts at a dealership. I spent close to 1000$ myself on my subaru, but I had to replace everything except for the evaporator core and compressor. Im sure it would have been close to 2 grand at a mechanic.

Auto retard here, wot r these two cars
>>
>>15731971
One of their uses is to increase MPG by reducing drag. Is that not a reason to put a spoiler on a commuter car?
>>
I've got an older car ('86 190e 2.3 8v) that mostly runs fine, but occasionally it will just die and won't restart right away. It happens more often when I've got the clutch in and am on a slight upward incline. No idea why the incline matters, but it'll run just fine all through the rev range for hours, floor it, baby it, doesn't make a difference, but get a cold engine on a hill and it has a chance to die and not re-start right away.

When it dies it doesn't sputter or do it slowly, it's the same as if I had just turned the key off, running one second, off the next. When trying to restart it it'll crank just fine and I can smell unburned fuel, which leads me to believe that the fuel system's fine, but I know the previous owner had tried to fix this issue by replacing the fuel pump relay with used one off a junked car, so they could have mess up something there. I pulled a spark plug and it looked fine to my untrained eye.

So my question is this: how should I start diagnosing this? What should I be looking for? Everything I've thought of so far would be causing more problems than "occasionally stops when on a hill". A coil or wire problem I would think would cause problems with normal driving, same with a fuel or air issue.

For that purpose, I'd say get the cheapest Miata possible.
Or an old VW, original Beetle etc.

Basically because they're simple as fuck, and have a huge support network. You'll always have an answer to whatever your problem is.

I'd have to know the condition and mileage of the C4 to guess a price

>Ford F-150 XLT Sport Trim and Luxury interior w/5.0 V8 ($30k)
>Ford F-150 Lariat Base w/Ecoboost V6 ($36k)
>GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 4x4 ($31k)
>Toyota Tundra SR5 TSS 4.6 V8 ($32k)
>Toyota Tundra SR5 TSS 5.7 V8 ($34k)

All are either extended cab or double cab. I prefer the extended cab since at most I carry 4 people on occasion. Also the longer bed helps a lot.
>>
>>15735928
Unfortunately it's mechanically fuel injected, so who knows what could be going on in that. I'll see what I can find regarding the fuel pump next time it happens. I'll try and listen for it and listen for sputtering or something. But since it'll drive just fine at speed/after warming up/when it feels like it up much steeper hills than it has stalled on I don't think it's just the fuel pump. Although it could be a lot of little things that include the fuel pump.

I think you have to get a really high trim to get luxury from them, I have the Sport model and it's comfy as fuck, but also pretty damn pricey for a truck.

Are these prices new or used/CPO?
>>

>>
>>15736058
All prices are new/2016 model year.
>>
>>15736069
You should consider CPO then
A one year old CPO car with 3k miles is like $5,000 cheaper than the new equivalent, and it still has a full warranty
>>
>>15736009
yeah, still thinking fuel delivery though... otherwise I can't see why performance would otherwise be good. still would start with fuel pump. I still think the pump would be more stressed up hill than at speed. I would measure the voltage at pump first, since its free, and these old cars often have trouble grounding/ old connections/ less available amps. if it checks out, I'd still probably swap fuel pump next, .. not too pricey... good to have anyway.

... kind of a riddle here.... whatever you do, I'd mess with it on ramps to simulate incline.
in line fuel pressure gauge also an option to get a general look at this system
>>
>>15736009
damn it now its in my head... othe thought... air in fuel line. would be effected by incline and is free to check out. check all fuel line connections. maybe change filter. could even put in a piece of clear line and look for bubbles.
I'm mostly a diesel guy and this may be more of a diesel thought but its just about free anyhow.
whatever it is, fix it tomorrow so I can read about it!

Structural integrity? Well, steel will flex more without permanent deformation, so vibration can be less of an issue.

Longevity wise I would imagine a high strength aluminum car to last longer due to corrosion resistance and if it was designed properly, it shouldn't be bending past it's deformation point anyway.

I'm getting a sound on my 2015 Honda Fit and google isn't narrowing it down too much. It's a slapping sound, kinda like rolled up paper being slapped back and forth on something. It's a very specific noise because it only happens when I'm driving between 40 to around 55 mph. Under 40, never hear the sound. Get to 60-65 and up? The sound goes away.

I'm thinking it might be tire alignment becuase that can fuck with specific speeds, but it might be something else.
>>
>>15738174
Flapping sound, shouldn't be tire alignment, that would just be vibration at speeds, which could cause flapping but doubtful.

More likely you have a loose underpanel or something loose on the exterior/underbody that is getting turbulence at a certain speed. Going below that speed would mean no sound, going above that speed would create a high enough air velocity to straighten it out and stop it.
>>
>>15738196

>>15737412
Quite honestly just watch them in order if at all possible. The first season may not be very good so you could skip it, but it's good to start later because they will make some references about things that have happened and it's more fun and you will feel like you're getting into the loop if you watch in order.

>>15737225
These Audis ARE good cars but they cost so damn much to repair. I mean just Google the cost of replacement for a windshield and a wheel bearing, and you'll find your initial cost for the car.

These are the cars that require the bumper to be taken off for an oil change and the engine to be pulled to change the timing chain. I mean the engineered these cars to need to be taken to a dealer ship so you couldn't work on them.

No my friend, >>15738269 is righto.

Spoilers REDUCE DRAG to help aerodynamics and therefore make it easier on your engine to go the same speed. Increases mpg and can help you go faster in a line.

Wings INCREASE DRAG in a specific direction that helps push the car into the ground. Actually slows you in a straight line but the downforce increases grip and therefore cornering speed increases as well.

It has the 5.0, bucket seats, power adjusting seating, heated seats, remote start, and a bunch of other goodies. It doesn't come with leather, just cloth. It's labeled "luxury trim" but most of the shit is small quality of life improvements.

The touch screen is standard, I don't care about that. The thing is going to be a daily driver, so the heated seats/bucket seats are a godsend.

when down shifting in a manual car entering a corner, is it better technique to

A: Clutch in, rev match, move gear selector from 4th to 3rd to 2nd, and clutch out or

B: clutch in, rev match, move selector from 4th immediately to second.

I almost always use A, but it was a habit I never really thought about until recently when it occurred to me I could be wearing transmission components unnecessarily.

I dislike B in general because by going to neutral and then hunting for a much lower gear it takes me longer to confirm with confidence I'm selecting the right gear. But of this is better for some reason, I'll force myself to get used to it.

>>
>>15739073
mustangs are reliable especially compared with a beetle.
>>
>>15739073
>>15739080

This is exactly what I didn't want to hear haha, I absolutely love the design of the Audi's I've seen.
>>
>>15739148

>>15739118 Is kind of correct. I would recommend just heavily doing your research on the engines. They can be awful money pits for sure compared to a lot of other cars, but it's not unavoidable either.

example: the 2.0 FSI motors wear through the cam followers on the high pressure fuel pumps in about 50k miles. Cheap fix, if you know it's happening. If you don't know about it is a disaster waiting to happen for obvious reasons.

They not awful cars, they just need owners they give a fuck and pay attention.
>>
>>15739162
That's the thing though, I don't know anything about cars. I've been trying to learn stuff online and plan on taking an auto class at community next semester, so I feel like it wouldn't be wise for me to get a car like that right now.

Looks like a good option. Low miles, and toyota tends to be reliable. I'd have a mechanic go over it because that's what you do with any car you buy. It's salvage title, so I'd be wary of that, look for any frame damage, misaligned body panels, et cetera. If they can tell you why it has a salvage title, that matches with what you see on the body, and it doesn't impact the function of the vehicle, it might be a good option. Just keep in mind it's a salvage title. It's relatively low miles, so that's a good thing, as long as whatever incident totaled it, didn't impact the engine or body too much.

So, how do I take out an alternator belt? I know how to get to it but I'm a literal nigger
>>
I have an 02' wrx and I bought some gauges from prosport and up until may my exhaust gas temperature was fine up to about 1550 F, now when I step on it WOT, it will rise to ~1700. I didn't touch shit in the engine. There's no codes or warning lights. The other problem is that my oil pressure is dropping to 9-10 psi at idle. Back before the EGT started rising to 1700 I never had an issue with oil pressure. The oil is full, the water temp is good, so I'm out of ideas as to what causes hotter EGT and low oil pressure.
>>
>>15739864
Download the repair manual for your car.

Or find a physical copy.

Different cars have different procedures for removing the belt. On mine, there's a bolt to loosen the alternator mounting, and the alternator mounting swivels to loosen the belt and allow it to be removed. Other cars might have a separate pulley that loosens to allow the belt to be removed.

You have to find the specific procedures for your individual car.

How bad of an idea is it to try and move my vehicle in the garage using a floor jack?

Basically, I am an impatient little fuck and started tearing the rear axle apart on my spare vehicle to replace all the bearings before I was really ready to. The rear end is up on jack stands right now and I have the carrier, bearings and r&p removed. It was only then that I realized that I can't get one of the axle shafts out because it's too close to the wall to slide out and I need it removed to replace the wheel bearings. Basically, I'm wondering if I could get away with putting my heavy duty 3 ton floor jack under the center of the axle, lift it off of the jack stands, and use the wheels of the jack on the smooth concrete garage floor to roll the back of the vehicle sideways away from the wall. I would probably do this inch by inch.. move it an inch or two then scoot the jack stands over under the axle and move it a couple more inches. If I make sure no part of me is under the vehicle at any point while I'm trying to roll it do you think it will work? Or am I just a complete retard and should give up wrenching and an hero?

I'll give a bit of backstory, I was driving somewhere in Socal summer heat and one of my fan relays decided to quit working, I noticed the oil pressure drop before the water temp started to rise, once I started moving and cooled the water down, the oil pressure went back up to ~12 psi. My oil pressure is lowest during the hottest time of the day, havent checked to see if the a/c being on affects the water temp affecting the oil temp and then oil pressure. Oil pressure while driving is normal, EGT while driving normally is normal, ~1200. Only under WOT does it get really hot. My EGT is tapped into my cylinder 2/4 exhaust manifold. What are common causes of a lean mixture? Could my injectors be clogged? Could there be a pinhole leak in my turbo inlet after my MAF sensor? The only changes I made when the issue started was a new K&N air filter and new intercooler hoses. I'm pretty sure if the high EGT is fixed, the oil pressure will sort itself out.

so can anyone here with a 22re powered vehicle tell me what this apparently unused connector is for? I say unused because it was there when I bought the truck, and it doesn't trigger a CEL/cause it to run like garbage, so evidently it isn't important. (CELs on now, but that's because the boomer-run exhaust shop in town decided o2 sensors weren't important and just stuck the rear one in a crossmember port). only thing I can think of is maybe cruise control or something. Take it to mazda, get it reflashed with the latest revised tune.

Higher omp rate for more oil at lower rpm's, fixes the flooding issues by making the tune far less rich, actually picks up around 12hp from it.

Premixing is for people who still have the base tune..

Your alternator power steering and ac compressor are driven by that belt at the very least.needless to say you wont get far without it. Literally a 20 dollar part at autozone. Check your tensioner and pulleys after you replace the serpentine belt
>>
>>15743127
I have a 92' explorer that also has a lot of unplugged connectors, I think they use widespread wiring harnesses and you're looking at a plug that probably goes to something on a different model like you said cruise control or some other sensor. Sometime those plugs are also for diagnostics too. I don't think you need to worry about it. It would be nice if manufactured had little dust boots to cover those so the owner can know that it's not supposed to be used rather than my car running like shit and I'm staring at an unplugged connector.

What is a cheap RWD sedan or coupe that could be easily found in the US. It can look kinda fugly, I just want to drop an LS in something RWD and see how fast I can make it. I saw some 635 CSi in my area, but they are going for $2-3k without drivetrains because they are "collectible".
>>
>>15745745
definitely not that. try a foxbody.
>>
>>15745804
Don't they roll fairly easily? I was told that at some point, but honestly never followed up on it. Also those are pretty pricy here as well. About $1.2-2k in non running condition. Can't even find the ones with the 4 light front here.

>>
>>15745745
The BMW is only collectable if it's all matching numbers and complete. If you're ripping out the old drive train anyways, just take the cheapest rust-free Foxbody/Camaro and run with it.
>>
>>15745814
they're fantastic chassis, but you're not going to get in on one worth using for 2-3k and it'd be a damn travesty if you did.

>>
>>15745840
Check with local shops and get some free quotes on repairs. Check the KBB value or whatever the insurance company uses to determine the cars value. Ifor the car costs more to repair than replace, it is totalled.
>>
>>15745885
The radiator and the engine are kill, the car I checked is worth less than 2000 (2003 Malibu, 140,000 miles)
>>
>>15745840
Let the insurance companies battle it out. They'll only pay out the cost of the car if the damage exceeds the worth of the car. KBB or black book or NADA are what they usually use to determine a cars value.
http://www.nadaguides.com/Cars

If the damage is below the value of the car, you might be stuck with it, I think your insurance will take car of you and just send the bill to the other insurance company. So at least if you have a good insurance company, state farm, geico they'll make sure the repairs aren't half assed.
>>
>>15745946
Also if the engine is kill, most likely there's frame damage and if the airbags went off, any chance to save the car is kill. He'll get the payout for sure, so start shopping around for new cars.
>>
>>15745266
look under the car, if you see a driveshaft to the rear wheels, RWD or AWD, if no driveshaft to the rear, then FWD
>>

Well, you can always point out that you cant register a car that doesn't pass emissions and a car you cant drive (realistically) is pointless. So ask him what's the minimum amount he'll take for the car and if he still says 2k, then walk away

>>
>>15746093
Allstate should be fine, I was referring to Juilo's Pumpin' Coner Store Car Insurance. But I'm 99% certain that the car is dead. Have Allstate tow it to one of thier bodyshop vendors who will write up an estimate or even thier preliminary review could be over what the value of the car is so then you can just tell Allstate to mail you a check and you'll get it within 2-3 days and you can get another car. The process should be very fast if you just tell Allstate to take care of everything

I read somewhere insurance will only give you what your car is worth, is that true? Or can I take my dad take all the money he put into insurance?
>>
>>15746177
No, they'll only pay out a generous amount of what the car is worth. Im not sure how they calculate it though. I had an 04' wrx that i bought for 10k and i crashed after a few months and state farm paid out 17 grand. Idk where the got that number since KBB said the car was worth around 9.5k
>>
>>15746177
I also need to know. Does what i originally payed 6 yrs ago pay off if its totaled or would they give me the same 6k for it.
>>
>>15746307
Consider this, would you buy a 2000 something car for its original sticker price? Essentially your insurance is "buying" your car from you for what its reasonable market value right before you crashed it. If they paid you what you originally bought it for, what would stop everyone from crashing their 3 year old car and getting a new one every 3 years?

Would it be worth it to take it to a body shop and have them fix it? It's less then 10 deep scratches

Yeah i thought it was something like that just people in my college say some pretty dumb shit when it comes to insurance and loans.
I was asking becuase i have no clue what happens if you over paid for an old car. I figured Id probably get 2k out of this maybe but idk how insurance companies check the value. Ricers inflated em2 prices quite a bit here.
>>
>>15747045
If you overpaid on an old car, you're fucked. If you've ever read any of the LongPostGuy threads, may he rest in peace, a lot of people make a rookie mistake like that. Suppose you bought an old beater for 5K on a loan and crashed it right away and insurance only pays out 2k, there's nothing you can do unless you had GAP insurance which covers the difference.

serious question:
What are some good resources for learning general auto repair and maintenance?

not-so-serious question:
I have long joked about buying my mom's prius, gutting it, and replacing the powertrain with one from a corvette. How feasible is this? Assuming a sufficiently large budget, could it be done? What would have to happen?

You know what I'd do with the powertrain? replace an RV's generator with it. the prius "synergy drive" or whatever the fuck they call it would make for a supremely efficient generator. It would be great.
