I DD a TDI Beetle. It's a 2003 GLS 5 speed. I think they make excellent daily drivers but the quality of the interior plastics is awful. That's my main bitch.

The 1.9 is pretty torquey and gets up to speed with great ease. I would have loved to look at other options but there was nary a diesel Saab or Volvo to be found. Wasn't interested in a diesel BMW.

I appreciate good simple bait, but for real
my dd is an 86 diesel golf
car looks like its been neglected for 30 years
still gets 40 + mpg
got it for 600 and have put maybe 300 more into it... 2 years now
easy to work on.
I love the lack of spark... simplify.
Acceleration? no... if thats your thing, drive gas
the sound? are you guys serious with this bullshit? yup, loud. I love it because I'm a diesel guy and love these cars and when I hear it, I have positive associations firing in my brain.
If I was a gas guy and worked on a particular gas engine, I would love the sound of that engine

If he has a fuckton of torque at 100RPM, making the same power as another engine with less torque at 6000 RPM, the low RPM high torque engine could much more easily take heavy loads, unlike your mother, due to the abundance of low end torque

The "hurr I need a full size truck to tow an ATV or jetski around" is mentally damaged. Semi trucks have as much as 0.025 lbft of torque per lb of weight, and those are the big engines.

With a 140 lbft engine you could power a 5600 lbs combination and get to the same torque to weight ratio as a 600 hp semi.

>>
>>15662220
Torque for a really small powerband feels fast to those who are too poor at driving to choose the correct gear to go fastest in, and for road driving, where you rarely have max acceleration for long periods. Drive a diesel at high revs on a track and you'll realise they don't have outright pace compared to an equivalent petrol engine.

Gearing is a thing, also it gets like 50mpg probably which is good for an engine that produces that ammount of torque. Not to mention diesel is cheaper and taxes are usually lower for diesels.

So what? Diesel fuel systems are far more complex and require more parts.

Yeah you're just making shit up.
>>
>>15673562
There's 25 year old diesels out there that get 50+ mpg and still run perfectly.
All you have to do is avoid shit brands like Volkswagen if you want your engine not to blow up.

Also I fucking hate the diesel smell, I come from work with a headache and I have to go through amplified diesel smells because I've got gall issues

Most old diesels, even tarbod peak at about 2000-2500 rpm, over that and you wont be going anywhere.

>Consumer diesels very expensive to maintain if something shits.
yeah, modern ones, because of design choices in the diesel industry... not really an argument against diesels , just modern, consumer diesels.... I don't drive one of them either.... thats why there's whole forums of guys like me with the old, cheap to maintain one's that refuse to die. a lot of the advancements that make repairs pricey are the same advancements that will make your modern gasser more pricey.

>So what? Diesel fuel systems are far more complex and require more parts.

again... your critiquing the modern consumer diesel industry, not diesels. at the core, the only things a diesel would need but a gas engine wouldn't is a pre heating mechanism to start engine... which is usually glow plugs on the simplest type of circuit, and an injection pump capable of delivering fuel at a greater pressure. The pump can also serve as your general fuel pump, so that again simplifies, and there are wonderfully long lasting mechanical IPs available
>Diesel is much more expensive in US. Energy per unit of currency is more valid metric.
yup... still better even with that adjustment... right now diesel is just a little more expensive and its just a market issue.. refinement process is literally the same - a gas version of my golf would get about 3/4 the milage... check out fuel prices, do the math

VAGs diesel motors are great. The PD130 was a great little 1.9 litre 4 cylinder diesel. I had a Skoda Fabia VRS with one an 130bhp and 230lb of torque. Tuners had a blast with those in the UK. Simple tunes would take you to 180bhp and 310lb of torque. Further tuning parts could take you to 220+bhp and nearly 360lb of torque.

The 3 litre V6 and 4.2 litre V8 diesels found in the Audi A6 and A8 are great units that take tuning well too.

The 5 litre V10s found in the Touareg and Phaeton were great engines too. 300+ brake and 700+ lb of torque depending on which vehicle they were in.

And then there's the 6 litre v12 diesel that was in the Audi Q7. 500PS and 1000NM of torque. Absolute brute of an engine.
>>
>>15674938
>700+
correction 700nm, 550+ lb
>>
>>15674938

They all make less torque than a gas V8. Junk. Yawn.
>>
diesel in the US is a meme for passenger vehicles. it's often more expensive than regular gas and the vehicles themselves are more expensive due to all the filtering shit
>>
>>15674958

Diesel is all about torque you fucking moron.

The 3 litre diesel twin turbo V6 found in the Audi A6 makes 310hp and 480lb.ft
The 3 litre petrol twin turbo i6 found in the M3/M4 makes 425hp and 406 lb.ft

The 4.2 litre diesel twin turbo V8 found in the Audi A8 makes 380hp and 627lb.ft
The 4.4 litre diesel twin turbo V8 found in the BMW M5 makes 560hp and 502lb.ft

At least in Europe. America however has a history of making horribly inefficient engines with massive capacity for fuck all in return, be it petrol or diesel. LIke the Ford power stroke someone posted a picture of above. 7.3 litre diesel. 235hp. 425lb.ft. At least the 3.5l V6 ecoboost for 2017 will perform better than the current 5 litre coyote V8. 385/387 for the coyote to the 450/470 for the ecoboost.

You're making it worse bud. Way to compare modern engines to a 30 year old beast. It's pretty damn easy to get 627lb.ft out of a LS engine... It's pretty pathetic when a twin turbo diesel V8 can barely make that much.
>>
>>15675135
A twin turbo diesel can barely make 627ftlbs? Double that buddy.
>>
>>15675135

Making what worse? Diesels produce more fucking torque. By nature of the fuel and the way diesel engines work. It's that simple.

The current 5.2 V8 petrol in the Mustang can only manage 429lb.ft.
The current 5.2 V10 petrol in the Audi R8 can only manage 398lb.ft and 413lb.ft in the Plus model
The 12 year old 5.0 V10 diesel in the VW Touareg can manage 627lb.ft.

If you want more torque you need more displacement in NA engines and efficiency goes down the shitter.
>>
>>15675182

Then strap a turbo or two onto the gas V8 and you couldn't make that little torque plus it'd be more efficient.
>>
>>15675135
Nigga my 6.4 powerstroke with bolt on and tune makes 1240ftlbs and cruise on the highway at 28mpg
>>
>>15675182
NA diesels make less torque, it's just that TDs run massive boost pressures to make up for it.
30psi from the factory is unheard of in petrol engines but it happens with diesels.
>>
>>15675199
Diesel fuel is one of the most efficient and energy dense fuels available today. Because it contains more usable energy than gasoline, it delivers better fuel economy.
>>
>>15675202

I know, I'm all for american truck diesels. It's just VW that's pathetic at making "big" diesel engines.
>>
>>15675244

If you're talking about tuning, the MB OM606 shits all over the VAG offerings. It makes 170ish HP in default form, but strap on a few common bolt-ons and you're now tickling the five hundred barrier with torks for days. Units making beyond 600 HP aren't unheard of either, and how often do you see a diesel rev out to 7 grand?
