now that I think about it, in sport it hangs onto the gears and revs a little higher before switching. in D it's like it always wants to be in 6th gear.

Sport mode is kinda BS on economy cars. The only good "sport" feature in an automatic econobox is sportronic shifting. Atleast you can control when it upshifts with a slapshift

I used to have a first gen Acura 3.2TL that is basically an accord underneath. I remember reading that D3 would hold the gears to almost redline if you gun it and not go into fourth. Sort of a rudimentary sport mode. That seemed correct when I tried it
