That's what I did. Basically couldn't find any job that pays more than $14/hr. Went to cdl school and immediately got a $18/hr driving job with the same working hours as my previous job. CDL jobs are everywhere, pickings are a little slim out of school because no one trusts you with driving a truck (ironically imo but just look at OP and that's why)

My plan has always been to go with whoever will hire me first and with my class c being so recently new(i've had it since last sept) the only one who seems good(an oxymoron i'm aware) is SWIFT as their requirement is lower than werner transport's.

I never drove stick before I started. In a way they say it's better that way, less bad habits to unlearn. But shifting was also somewhat difficult for me to learn too because I was just not comfortable having to focus on that as well as watching the road, trailer, all the mirrors, and all the other stuff, shifting just seemed overwhelming on top of all that. Lauderdale and they were doing construction all over Ocean Dr. Pretty much every stop, I couldn't make the turn into the stop because of cones or those barrels. Question for drivers.

My father started working for a company transporting trucks piggybacking off each other from one location where they were not needed to another hub where they were needed. He began without any proper training, just hopped in, watched a youtube video on his phone on how to shift, then went on his way and learned.

He did eventually obtain a CDL, but he still has no proper training. He found a testing center and requested a test and simply had a CDL within a few days.

Thoughts on this versus the alternative community college or truck school? Is it even possible or is he fucking with me?

I know a guy who has a really bad driving record circa 10 years ago. Somehow he managed to get a CDL despite that, while working at a common carrier shipper for some additional responsibilities/duties apart from his main job.

Is all the stuff in the past water under the bridge, could he get a legit short haul shipping job, for example, with a fuel delivery company? Or does the bad driving record from 10-12 years ago taint everything forever?

He currently holds a CDL in good standing.

Truck schools can be greatly beneficial if you lack confidence in certain situations or you want some decent credentials to secure you a decent gig. IMO I think there's far too many poorly educated drivers out there doing bonehead things because they simply didn't know that what they were doing could be done a better way or is simply retarded to the maximum. Today I watched as a driver spent 15 minutes trying to get into one of our loading bays. Painful ordeal because all of the other bays were empty and there wasn't much in the way of obstructions. I think international is a more comfy truck with better storage, interior, and features. But if I were buying my own truck or ordering a fleet I'm sure I'd buy freightshakers because of their reputation for reliability and easy maintenance. They also need to pass along information on traffic, because they don't seem to have real-time traffic update services, and because their car drivers are all retarded mouth-breathers who can't even be trusted with a manual gearbox.

Do you have experience with trailers or driving a manual truck? If so, you can probably get away with an abbreviated course. Unless you happen to know someone who will let you borrow a semi, the schools testing process will probably be a lot easier than doing it through a dmv as well. But really you need to be talking to recruiters for the OTR companies you're looking at. Find out what their hiring requirements are, as a lot will want recent schooling in addition to your class A
