Hey /o/, im in a bind wrestling with myself, i loved cars since i was a kid, never really got into it mostly becuz not much people around me were into cars which kinda blew, but i really wont to get into it. I might be to old at this point to begin(im 28). Should i start learning an becoming a great racer and mechanic? I have some knowledge but not much. Also pic related, its the style of camaro i have but with a red hood, 1991 chevy camaro z28.

Eith cars, it's all about the engineering. Assuming you know the basics of how a car works, I'd start by reading a book, either a repair manual specific to your car (like Chiltons or Haynes), or one specific to your engine like this.

Whether your Camaro is worth modifying depends on the engine. It's a Z28, great but there were 2 different Z28 engines, the 305 (5.0L), and the 350 (5.7L) The 305 is trash because of its small cylinder bore that limits what size valves your can use. The 350 has a much larger bore and is easier to extract power from. With a 305, you'll hit the limit around 300 HP.
I'm not saying the bigger engines are always better. Chevy made a glorious 302 4.9L from 1967-1969 for trans am racing, but that engine had the same bore as the 350 and a much smaller stroke, which makes it a very high revving screamer.

yes sir, its a 350 5.7L. I love this car its my dream car since i was boy, I found it after i got home from deployment, finding it on accident
It's not too late op, I'm 25 still in he Marines and am starting to learn about wrenching and shit. I started by buying "how cars work" because I didn't know a fucking thing, next a haynes manual and doing basic/intermediate shit on my car after like a year. 7 months ago I started part timing weekends at autozone delivering to shops and basically bothering master mechanics and techs asking questions and learning every chance i get. Next on base i got transfered to work in the parts warehouse where the mechanics come to order and pickup parts. I ask them what everything does where it goes what causes it to fail etc. When I get out I might reenlist as a mechanic or use the GI BILL to go to a auto tech course. Try to get a job doing oil changes at a dealership or something and work your way up
Nice camaro too!
