What modern cars are fun/easy to wrench on?
>>
honda fit
>>
>>15596873
None. You are going to need extensive special service tools for diagnostics.
>>
>>15596873
What you're looking for is called a motorcycle.

Wrenching in general is not fun, unless you're a Masochist. I only do it becuase I'd be broke otherwise.

It's really not THAT expensive, especially if you look for them on sale around christma/black friday/back to school sales (Sears and Harbor Freight put all kinds of shit on sale for VoTec kids going back to school)

Having a proper scanner is just another tool you need, like a decent jack or set of sockets
>>
>>15596910
I wouldn't know that because I haven't wrenched yet.

Okay, what modern cars are easy to wrench on, or at least to preventative maintenance?
>>

theres nothing more rewarding than putting shit back together under the hood and going out for a rip

Crown vic, technically old but they made them until 2011. Most things are easy to do on them.

Maybe to you, but the physical pain and heartache when shit breaks trying to fix something else, and empty wallet when all is said and done, are not rewarded enough by the car simply doing what it should normally.

It just isn't, I only do it becuase I can, and its 10 times cheaper than just say fuck it and get someone else to do it.
>>
>>15596873
Its not a new car but Ive have found that my 2001 corolla surprising easy to work on. It actually had plenty of room in the engine bay.

Honestly everything about the 5th gen SS is easy to work on

>Brake pad swap took less than an hour
>headers and shit took maybe 4 hours
>oil changes are like 30 minutes top
>CAI install took like 15 minutes
>hurst short throw shifter install took about 3 hours

All done by someone who isn't exactly a full on tech. Thinking about buying a supercharger and doing the install myself. Instructions are straight forward and doesn't require any tools I don't have

I agree with you. the least stressful car work I've done is working on my dad's car since I am not in a bind to have it fixed. working on my own cars? nightmare. all I want is my car fixed and if things aren't going right I'm already in ragemode. I own Toyotas for a reason... because I don't want to have to work on them. I'll get an older sporty car when I have some money saved and if its broken I won't be too worried about it.

eh.. maybe. I was thinking an early 00s maxima to be honest. an AW11 would be nice, but I'd want a v6 swapped in it from the Sienna or Camry, but I don't know if I'm capable of it.
>>
>>15597068
Being able to work on your car is always going to be a big part of the culture, just like building/working on your pc is a big part of computer enthusiasm. Enthusiasts should have more knowledge about, interest in, and willingness to mess with things they like than non enthusiasts.

I'll agree though that repairs can be annoying; no one likes it when their stuff is broken, but routine maintenance and upgrades are fun.

This. I replaced the headgaskets on my subaru myself, saved about $1000 in the process, and have the satisfaction of knowing that without my hard work/under someone else's ownership, the car would have gone to the junkyard a long time ago. Instead it runs better than new and is now dead reliable because of me. I made this work.

Mercedes Mechanic here, no I won't claim any Merc to be easy to wrench on...

For easy wrenching, I would have to claim :
-Most trucks that still use full frames.
-Toyota : Corolla, Camry, Yaris, GT86, even the FJ.
-Honda : Civic (obviously), Accord.

... As for the Big three domestics, unfortunately their cars are mostly designed retardedly. Think tightly packed like German cars, but for absolutely no reason.

Most Subarus are fun to wrench on... but when they rust holy shit do they become a pain in the ass.

I'm probably forgetting a shit load as the wine is starting to kick in, but yeah, don't bother wrenching on german vehicles for fun, unless they're older models.

What are you talking about? My 2000 focus was a breeze to work on, it was as hard as a civic.

Also my 1998 dodge dakota wasn't as bad as other dodge cars, but i guess you already mentioned trucks.

I so far haven't owned an American car younger that 2005 so idk maybe newer ones have gotten too hard to work on.

>>15597653
Not even close. A 2 dollar cutter, 20 dollars worth of metal tubing, and that's a generous amount, couple fittings, and about an hour of work.

Or call the dealer, give VIN, order brake line kit, get all new lines with fittings, two hours to replace. Changing a RWD clutch is WAY more work, and happens three times more often.

i don't know, i don't have autozone around here. And seeing as the average OBD2 reader, those tiny ones with yellow LCD screens costs around 70 bucks here, 500 for a full kit doesn't sound too crazy.

Idk man, i REALLY like working on cars. I especially like cars that are a pain to work on.

Like that image. You may wonder why I drove it up on bricks instead of jacked it, and the reason is because I tried to jack it and the jack just broke through the rusted underside and jammed itself into the car.

I don't know what people are complaining about, even fucked cars are fun to work on.

Look on the bright side, now you can replace them with steel.
>>
With a simple scan tool, a test light, and a multimeter you can just about diagnosis any car. You just need an understanding of the circuit you are trying to troubleshoot and some time to back probe some connectors to test
>>
>>15597703 I too live in the rust belt.
I had to do a wheel bearing that pressed into the knuckle and spent two hours removing a eclip with all the rust. I broke the needle nose pliers trying to get the thing to pop. Finally got one side out and removed it tire lever style. Then I had to press out, re press and assemble the whole thing again. All in a barn with no heat. Like I said. In theory it is fun.

I had to do a CV axle change in -10 celcius cos my boot was leaking bad and it was gonna break one of these days.

Snow all over my drive way, jack wouldn't stay still because snow was too thick, and it was cold as balls. I couldn't feel my toes or fingers.

I still had fun though so idk what you're talking about. Also it turns out the older CRV has enough torque in the rear diff to be completely RWD.

Nobody decks their own heads dipshit. That's what head shops are for.

>>15597414
They fucking do dude all the time. For every one head gasket you do on a 300k mile car there are ten that are scrapped instead.

I junked a LeSabre because it needed a front wheel hub. Drove it to the salvage yard.
>I got satisfaction watching them toss it around with the pay loader.

Scrapped my s10 because it needed a ton of work.
>Drove it to the salvage yard as well

Mate of mine scrapped a 04 Envoy because it needed a trans.
>He pulled the motor, front diff, and rear diff

Is the point of this post to say that people junk things because they can and have money to buy a new one?
>>
>>15597703

Agreed, satisfaction is had with completing difficult tasks :)

I feel you on this. I picked up a 99 legacy GT with blown headgaskets from some dumb kid who was gonna scrap it. Rebuilt the engine heads up, only for the fact i have a soft spot for 2nd gen legacys, and boxers are fun engines to work on.
>>
>>15597414
That's fucking retarded, any sane person would either do it themselves or junk it.

S197 Mustang

I have an '07 GT, just lowered it.
Everything is big and easy to access
The live rear axle made it easy to swap out the rear coils since dropping it decompresses both sides at once.

I work as a service tech for STIHL equipment, and honestly, even that kinda kills working on my car for me. I go home and the last thing I wanna do is turn more wrenches. When I spend an afternoon off working on my car, I almost feel like I wasted my day. I'm sure most mechanics and anyone else in this sort of trade feels similarly, but there doesn't seem to be any of those in this thread. It's either people who have an inflated sense of ego because they can do basic maintenance to their car, or people who are defending their lack of knowledge about wrenching. Fuck the former, I don't blame the ladder.

Yeah, it's not the ladders fault.

It's because for you it's a job.

I wrench when i want to, even when i have a car that's just completely open in my garage i have two others that are perfectly fine and can move me around until i feel like working on the one in my garage.

In fact that's exactly what's happening right now, my CRV is in the garage while my rogue and corolla move me.

I need to flip this corolla soon, so i gotta finish the CRV.

The 86 twins are actual quite easy despite the plastic covers on everything and the odd inconvenient security bolt.

Jay Leno was a mechanic before he was a comedian.

I actually fly cut my own head because I didn't want to pay to have it decked at a machine shop. Turned out just fine, although I forgot to measure the height of the head before so I'm not actually sure how much I took off. Hasn't blown up yet, though.
