I owned a 2004 S1 from new for about 20K miles, and a 2009 R3 for about 16k.

That's why I can honestly say that they are not good cars. They handle great. The engine is FUN. But it gets 12-13mpg in town. And REQUIRESSSS premix if you have ethanol'd gas.

Oh and they crash like fuckin garbage. Some tool in a Kia turned in front of my R3 and did 14K damage to my car. Popped the turn signal back in his and good to go.

But really, it's the terrible performance to mpg ratio. Needs premium, does 2mpg less IN TOWN than my Ls7 powered shitwhale that has more than double the HP. That's a bad fucking deal no matter what.

Rotaries use no more oil than a BMW or Mercedes, the acceptable oil burn rate on a BMW is actually higher than a rotary.

Like you mentioned, they had the 2.3 DISI turbo (MS3/MS6), which they could've used. Look at the Mustang, it's doing great there in a longitudinal layout.

Also, yes, the S2K is more popular and in general a better car, but market pricing fixes this. An RX-8 is so much cheaper, you'll have plenty of money left for maintenance and gas - and a few cheeky mods that'll make it just as fast.
