Left my job at honda about a month ago to work for subaru.

Ask a subaru mechanic anything.
im still learning about boxer engines so i will answer your questions as best as i can.

yes i vape. my dealership has 3 sales guys that vape

yeah i have we have a long wait list. subaru of america hasnt given us the airbags yet. but we can do a few on the older legacys and outbacks
>>

How do I turn off the fucking hill assist on my wrx.
>>
>>15576490
thoughts on new base WRX? seems like a good deal for 26k. How can i get one for less than asking?
>>
>>15576561
what year is it?
>>
>>15576566
most subaru dealerships right now have deals on the base wrx. i highly recommend it over the BRZ and the BRZ is only 1300$ less then the base wrx. and you get a turbo charger and 68 more horsepower. you can negotiate the sticker price. if you cant negotiate they might throw in some free accessories with your new wrx for like 27 28k
>>
>>15576581
so out the door i probably won't get one for less than 27k?
>>
>>15576588
doubtful you still have to pay the tax on it the cheapest i have heard anyone getting a base wrx was for about 28k but not over that
>>
>>15576596
cool, i find it funny how people are dumb enough to buy the highest trim WRX's almost equaling same price as base STI, for the car it is you don't need all that bullshit leather seats, sunroof, headlights and shit
>>
>>15576621
no definetly agree i would buy a base no problem i would like a sunroof but thats about it i dont need leather or led headlights or any of that shit. we have a few premium wrx on out lot that are over 30k like, dude id rather have a base sti for that price haha
>>
plus, the WRX has a timing chain. ALL sti's have timing belts. i dont know about you guys but id rather have a chain.
>>
>>15576490
any discounts on any new vehicles?
>>
>>15576653
we just got our 2017 models in so there is a few incentives
all 2016 models are on sale right now. if you guys are thinking about buying any type of subaru wait until the end of the month
seriously if you ever heard of the term waiting to the end of the month to buy a car its true because we are all scrambling to make quota and to sell cars. seriously.
>>
>>15576665
but they hold value really well, how much can a 16' base wrx drop?
>>
>>15576596
holy shit why are 2004 wrxs 10k
>>
>>15576676
probaly not much. we have a base in our showroom that has a tag on it that says "manager special ask for details" but keep in mind everyone and their mother was probably rowing through the gears without the clutch pushed in. you know, dry shifting? kind of cringe worthy. i seen a few teen girls doing that shit. pisses me off
>>
>>15576490
How much more of a pain in the ass is maintanence on a subaru than some 4cyl honda? Im from the land of no subarus so have never had any hands on time with one

spark plugs are harder to do since the heads are on the left and right side oil changes on the older ones are still a pain. newer subarus have the filters on top. but the boxer engines have everything on top which is easily accessable. so i think its about easier if you have a newer on or a little harder with the older ones. pic related.

How do you feel about the CVTs in the WRX and Forester XT? I'm about to buy a new car but cannot row gears due to chronic injury.
>>
>>15576774
i personally hate the cvt. and the fact that the xt forester and wrx has that option kind of annoys me. its gutless and dumb in my opinion only advantage it has in those vehicles is better miles per galon. if you have an injury than i guess its best for you to get one. but if you could id still get the wrx. the xt forester is only cvt regardless
>>
Perfect timing, OP.

In a couple months I'll be trading in my F150 toward an older (early 00's to ~'06) Subaru Forester, in manual. Engine doesn't really matter to me.

What can you warn/recommend when it comes to looking at these? Is mileage a huge concern? I read somewhere that at 100k miles, you are to replace the timing belt.

Thanks in advance.
>>
>>15576490
how long have you worked at subaru and what state are you in, iv been a subaru tech for two+ years now up in the new england area and god damn these things attract rust like fucking magnets.
>>
Are the boxers reliable? The answer to this question basically decides whether or not I buy an FR-S
>>
>>15576814
not OP just make sure it's got service records, especially timing belt
>>
I might be about to get a 2000-2004 WRX and I don't own a vape yet how fucked am I? But srsly, how bad are these cars? In terms of performance and comfort they're everything I need with two extra wheels getting power, but reliability and any details about them are a bit of a grey area.

Yes they are, they just tend to have headgasket issues around 120,000 mile intervals due to oil and coolant laying on the bottom part of the engine head gasket at all time. They also use a bit of oil which is completely normal for a boxer engine. I purchased a 2016 brz this past FEB and it was the best car i have ever driven. i recently turbo charged it and god damn it puts a smile on my face and an erection in my pants every time i turn that key. So yes, get the frs/brz/gt86 its well worth it.

>>15576834
not op but 2004 was the golden year for the STI these things are the greatest in terms of getting more power for the bang of your buck. Just look it over for rust on the frame and most likely its going to be beat on so you may need some engine work in the future.
>>
>>15576838
Neat, good to know about that headgasket thing.

I was looking at the FR-S because it seems like a relatively no frills 4banger "driver's car". It even has a similar curb weight to my current old coupe econobox. I don't know why America gets the Scion. I rather like the Toyota badge.
>>
>>15576838
what turbo kit and how much was the whole build?
>>
>>15576875
Modern Automotive Performance turbo kit, ran 3500 went down to 3300 because the intercooler that showed up had a cosmetic dent in it from being shipped. The dyno tune cost me 800. But its well worth it. Also being a technician I put everything on myself, roughly 10 hours to figure out how to throw everything together.
>>
>>15576889
why an unknown kit rather than well known greddy, or even reliable jackson racing or vortech supercharger? How much power you making and how reliable has it been? Was the clutch the only necessary upgrade?

>>
Any good or recommended addons when buying a wrx?Anything i should avoid? Thinking just all weather mats, front bumper lip, good bumper to bumper warranty.
>>
>>15576914
all weather mats are standard in all subaru models the sti lip kit looks good on them. id recommend the sti exhaust or SPT we sell performance parts by SPT you can get it ordered with that exhaust alonfg with battery tie downs and oil cap. you can also get SIT short throw shifter and pedal set. nothing i know has been a bad accessory they are all good.
>>
Damn shame new wrx's no longer use UEL headers
>>
>>15576950
They are trying to change things up that's why
>>
>>15576896
I searched around looking for a kit with an unequal length exhaust manifold and this company sold one with the kit (for that boxer rumble). They also used precision turbo which was pretty good in my books. I'v kinda went off spec's and out of the bunch this kit was cheaper and seemed to be well put together. I made 270 WHP but it could have been more, i told them to run boost off the waste gate that had a 7-8 psi spring rather than a boost controller that i also brought just not to push the engine to its limits where it would start to over heat since the radiators a bit small. I'm going back once i upgrade a couple more things to look at 330 whp mark, and then i think i'll do an engine tear down for pistons and rods to lower the compression ratio since its so damn high down to something reasonable for more boost.
>>
>>15576900
Yeah the BRZ does have a better front end look to it, the interior plastics are a bit nicer too, and in the 2016 models they threw a carbon fiber look to the passanger dash rather than that cheap metallic stuff they used before. They also upgraded the radio to what was being used in forester from two years ago rather than the cheap as fuck radio from before
>>
>>15577341
I'd still get a wrx. Since I stated in my previous post it's only 1300$ more than a brz and you get 68 more horsepower and more torque and a turbocharger

>>15576571

is there any advantages/disadvantages between the same gen (early 00's) Forester and outback?

>>
>>15576900
I'm looking at a brand new Forester or Outback. I'm leaning forester cause it's taller for more activities. 2.5 N/A. Thoughts? Heard anything about them?

Like you said the A/C and the alternator being right up top seems balls easy, along with the oil filter. Even the plugs looked semi-reachable despite being sideways.

head gasket and timing maintenance at 120k, you say? anything else to watch for?
>>
When I come to a stop in my 03 Outback (auto) the car shakes a little bit but when I put it in neutral or park it stops shaking. What could it be?

25k isn't all that expensive for a forester. an SE CRV is 24-25 and I am far more skeptical of their automatics. Plus the forester has more cargo room.

the real tempting competitors are the edge and equinox, because they're dirt cheap... 25-26 gets you a 2.0T in the edge and you can get an equinox for 23. but they're fucking eggs.

its not a meme i see it all the time. not like super fucked but it ranges in severity from just starting to seep to total coolant drip from under the block. newest vehicle i have seen a head gasket issue on was a 2010 outback and it had 60k miles on it. i would probably take your wrx to a shop and atleast check if they are seeping the most common probably i have seen with those cars is rod knock happening out of no where.

On mobile so can't post pics/vids because the shitty fucking app crashes but

I'm on my 2nd SF5 Forester and they're great cars, mine has 170k miles and I'm confident it will make it to 250-300 easily.

Just make sure they have maintenance records for timely oil, coolant flushes with OEM coolant and importantly coolant conditioner

Make sure the water pump and timing belt and assorted pulleys have been replaced on schedule.

Since OP the retard wasn't able to answer the question further down in the thread let me go into the head gasket issue

It happens because of the shitty gaskets Subaru used for years and years, that's why it doesn't happen in Porsches, etc.

They tend to go anywhere from 50-150k miles, just make sure they've been replaced (with fel-pro or six star gaskets, not OEM gaskets!!!). If they haven't, it's a $1000 service at an Indie shop, easy enough to do yourself though

The bitch of working on boxers is that they have to be pulled for damn near everything, there's no easy access to shit in the bay

If you buy an older (before ~2005) Subaru, expect to hear weird noises and shit every once in a while, just saying

Look for a stock well maintained one, fucking obviously

As a mechanic, its not a subaru but I need help as the forums aren't giving me any advice and I am stumped. I am going to copy and past from QTDDTOT

Alright /o/ I NEED help.
So about last week my CEL light came on p0171 system too lean. I ignored it, and fast-forward to two nights ago on my street home it completely stalled, however I just coasted and parked didn’t try to turn it on that night. The next day it started but was unable to hold idle and would stall. If I tried to rev the engine it would suck in a bunch of air and ultimately stall. Well I looked it up and everything led to the MAF sensor, so I unplugged it and it was able to idle but the battery light was on. Anyways I replaced the MAF sensor and the CEL light is now gone but I am still having the same problems, except now with the MAF unplugged it will still stall in the end, I am just able to rev it freely. Any Ideas? I am stumped. I am thinking maybe a clogged cat but I am not sure. It is a mazda rx8 if that makes any difference.

I have a 2000 forester in overall really good shape, 118k miles, timing belt etc. replaced at 100k.

It is, however, losing oil. I can smell a slight smell of burning oil from the drivers side of the engine compartment after i drive it for awhile, and I have to add a quart every couple weeks.

Is it head gasket? Something else? What should I do to diagnose and fix for as cheap as possible.

I just bought this car a couple months ago, most of my experience is working on chevy small blocks so any help would be appreciated.

check around your valvecovers for any leaks. The other things to check would be the front crank oil seal and the rear main seal where your TC/flywheel is. All common areas of oil leaks on subaru's.

Why aren't you working on that backlog of warranty headgaskets OP?

I traded in a 2013 altima and really got used to its cvt. I drive through mountains a lot and the cvt is perfect for that. I test drove the manual wrx and didn't like the clutch and long shift throws. Didn't look forward to that shit in traffic every morning. I used to deliver pizza in a big city in a stick and i still have nightmares about.

Anyway, my other question is since the cvt wrx's seem to be so rare do you think that will add to its resale value?

And I agree that they are great cars, I just get tired of seeing the hate on them from the general public because of the "underwhelming" horsepower.
Part of the reason why we don't see more amazing things from the 86/brz is that Toyota and Subaru can't agree on anything on this car, they should have made it together and then let each other take it on from there with either variants that they create and given some flavor between the two.
And I'm excited to see Subaru wanting to continue on with the endeavor with a second car while Toyota fucks off with talks with BMW to make another car.

But why? Everything going to need to be replaced, why would anyone buy a car for $6k then spend another couple grand over a couple years to keep it running.

Opposed to paying $6k for something that hasn't ran till the end of its life cycle. I'm trying to buy a 1st gen forester but everyone just labels their car as "RARE" and wants a stupid price for an outdated as fuck car.

Does the BRZ have bad visibility?

I was looking at the Fiesta ST and Camaro, both had poor visibility. Heard the 370Z does too.

Is a weird metallic jingling sound from the CVT during acceleration normal? I ran over a deer carcass on the interstate a few months after I got my 2015 forester and never had it checked out because nothing appeared to be damaged. But I started noticing that sound a short while afterward, though I've never been sure if it was present before.

I've never had issues with it, except for very infrequent moments where acceleration from a stop is sluggish for a couple seconds (usually when driving up a slight incline).

300 km is nothing... Unless you meant to say 300k miles
>>
>>15597629
wait. you're telling me the impreza wrx has a cvt option??
>>
>>15598717
The new ones do. The STi is still manual only in Aus.
>>
>>15598772
are they alright? hoping it would be at least fun to drive. never drove a cvt before

Are Subaru enthusiasts really bad as the memes say? Is it just a vocal minority that are bunch of flat-brimmed vaping swaggots, or are they the majority? Any subcultures among Subaru guys?

Might get a red BRZ or WRX.
>>
>>15599115
I guess I don't see the Subaru vape nation meme as much as I do here with mk3 golfs, Everyone who drives the mk3 Golf or Jetta has a vape pen.

>Does the BRZ have bad visibility?

If you've only been driving older cars, the A-pillars on any modern car will seem too large thanks to airbags and strict rollover crash standards. But aside from that and the standard coupe issues with a large B/C-pillar, visibility is good. Especially with the low hood.

>>15599067
>hoping it would be at least fun to drive

The best thing you can say about the CVT in the WRX is that it feels like a torque converter auto. It's fine. It works. But it's not what you should get unless you have a medical issue preventing you from using a clutch or manual gear lever.

Get a manual Civic or Carolla so you can get good and then get a nicer car in better condition after you save money.

bought an 07 Outback base model with 178k miles for $3,000 today

Bought a 2008 base Impreza back in March with 82,500mi on the odometer. May or may not have gotten a 3 year 36k warranty on it. I did it because of the head gasket leaking issue...did I fuck up?
>>

You did fine, as long as it's a manual :^)

Maintenance maintenance maintenance
if timing belt, water pump, and all pulleys haven't been done in the last 60k or so, do them. Get the coolant flushed and replaced with OEM Long Life coolant and conditioner(!!!)

>>15605040

A perfectly decent little commuter, you'll be glad you have AWD at some point depending on where you live

how much did you pay is the real q

Outback here, and it's automatic :^(
it does however have that sport feature that lets me manually cycle through gears so it's kind of like a standard
that's good enough r-right?

also it does need some work I think yea, tires are absolute garbage and some other whatnot

200kw atw Foz reporting... Well 193kw but close. Seen much oil in the intake from boosted EJ's? I'm working out whether or not to get a catch can. Going to start monitoring the residue (if any) Be good to know up front but if it's a common thing.
>>
>>15576490
Is having Subaru branded engine coolant really required like the manual suggests? Or can I get by with standard stuff.

Is the Impreza a good car?

Impreza guy.

N-no its not :\

I live in Ohio. The whole reason I got it lol.

$8000, been doing research on prices in a 200 mi radius of me and its the lowest I've seen that hadn't been riced or torn up by some 17y/o living out a Colin McRae...oh wait Ken Block (these days) fantasy.

Everyone says WRX but honestly I hate it and think it's ugly especially the tail lights. How's the 2016 impreza as a car? Keep in mind it's going to spend nearly 7 months in the cold canadian winter

Swapping out the HVAC Blower tomorrow, I could be wrong but an 11 year old car shouldn't have bad fan bearings this soon right?
I do know it's the motor as it was making a horrible racket the other day and only got worse until the bearing seized.
