This "grey poupon" colored beetle is a classic example of "Trying Too Hard". By doing this, it is breaking the original purpose of why the beetle was created and why people bought it. It is way too gaudy for a beetle. It reminds me of those old time 1990's sticker cards in bubblegum packages. They had "over the top" illustrations of cars such as having a supercharger stack rising up through the hood of a Beetle. There's a point where trying to hard is not appropriate for that car.
