just fucking why
>>
>>15568518
Modern cars have taught people that they don't have to be aware of their surroundings and be accountable for their actions, because the car will just solve the problem for them

>>
>>15568522
it isn't just modern cars, old cars too.
the issue is the sense of security that big
metal cage helps to develop. over time there
will be people who forget the limits of what protection their cars can provide, and push
risky behavior; because they forget physics will crush them and their tin can at 100mph.
>>
>>15568518
This place is like 15 minutes from my house, I've been by it countless times. It was a woman nigger driving I think.
>>
>>15568551

the biggest problem is that high speed doesn't feel speedy anymore.

even a decade ago 90mph felt much faster in an average car than it feels now.

they improved the ride, cars got a lot bigger (fucks with your perception), way less noisy and all those electronic nannies lull you too.

years back people were really aware of the driving when cars were noisier and not that shielded from the outside

>>
>>15568566
This.
Going that fast in classic cars is scary.
>>
>>15568522
Now that I own a motorcycle this scares the shit out of me.
>>
>>15568596
it totally should.

it's fucking absurd how less and less people pay attention in traffic and fuck over bikers all the fucking time.

bikers pretty much have to be aware of that and pretty much always have to expect the drivers around them to be total idiots
>>
>>15568522
I actually feel safer in an AW11 than any modern car.

It reminds me that I am, in fact, moving fast enough that I could die in a blink of an eye should anything go wrong. It makes me want to be aware of my surroundings, and the great visibility helps with that.

I'm sure people feel very safe driving their heavy, 13 airbag, self-propelled bunkers, but it takes away my driving confidence and can make some situations unnerving.
>>
>>15568602
It hasn't even been a month and I've nearly been killed twice by drivers who turned onto the road, apparently without looking. I now assume that every car is going to try to kill me by pulling out.

The only good thing is that I am much more aware when I drive my car.
>>
>>15568606
I remember like it was yesterday when visibility was seen as very important or even one of the MOST IMPORTANT safety features.

Now it seems like everything is about detaching the driver from the surroundings as much as possible.

No windows
no steering feel
almost no engine noise
no road noise
no tire noise feedback

I'd make some statement here about the added value of safety features that help a car's performance by adding to structural rigidity, but I would only be taking away from the fact that a well-constructed tank is only as good as the brains behind the wheel. Yes, when my old 9-5 was wrecked I was glad to have all the protection I had, but at the same time I was glad that I wasn't at fault, since I was sitting in place when the bastard in a Cobalt hit me.
>>
>>15568625

That's really fucking odd. Beautiful but seems fishy.

Kinda proves my thought that certain cars like borderline supercars don't have to obey some safety laws.
I mean, the car's front is way lower than the average one's too.

>I now assume that every car is going to try to kill me by pulling out.

As long as you keep this shit in mind you'll be able to avoid 99% of it. Just ride as if nobody can see. Don't even think "Oh, they'll definitely see me." Been riding for over 2 years like this and I've had countless dickheads nearly hit me, but I've been able to avoid it because of that.

>>15568632
There's no standard for pillar thickness, only that the weight of the car must be supported by the roof.

The NSX has a sloped roof that favors the back. If the car were placed upside-down, its trunk would be resting on the ground. The majority of the load goes on to its huge triangular-shaped c pillars.

>>15569379
I don't see how the actions of the other driver are in anyway defensible, they cut across several lanes to get into the passing lane because they were too stupid to position into a place they could safely merge, they merged across a place where they had no vision of the passing lane and when they finally did merge they clearly did not check their mirrors or the state of the passing lane all whilst going below the posted limit.

To me this exemplifies every trait of bad and dangerous drivers which is the fact that they drive around basically expecting to just do their own thing and have everyone react to them rather than reacting to the road around them.

>>
>>15570131
They were turning off most likely but that doesn't excuse cutting across several lanes that had right of way without checking your mirrors going below the speed of general traffic flow and just expecting people to let you in.

Quite clearly though, the driver did not know there was a car there because they weren't checking their mirrors. This type of maneuver is dangerous for that exact reason, every time you move to enter a new lane you should pause, check and make good your maneuver.

The POV car was doing nothing wrong and 100mph really isn't that unusual or fast for a modern semi-performance car. It's quite obvious from the video that the other driver was just totally unaware when even the most basic of learner drivers gets taught to check their mirors before they signal, never mind maneuver.
>>

This happened in Edmonton. The (first time IIRC) driver panicked/hesitated when the light turned yellow while they were making a left and didn't clear the intersection. Trucks take longer to stop when not fully loaded. More weight = better grip on the road. The massive drum brakes have no problem locking the wheels, it's not skidding that's the key.

Only if your brakes are limited to the same force as before. Thing is, they aren't. The coefficient of fricition between tires and road is slightly dependent on weight, but that makes maybe 10% difference between a car and a truck. The harder tires make more difference.
A rough value for what a fully loaded truck tire can achieve during braking is a µ of roughly 0.8. This means the maximum brakeforce it can transmit is 0.8 times the force pushing it onto the road. Effects of incline and aerodynamics aside, that force comes from the weight.
The brakes on any modern commercial vehicle are perfectly capable of locking up the wheels within a fraction of a second. So, in fact, the truck can decelerate (almost) as fast as a car.

Yes that is true, the heavier you are the more braking force you can apply and thats why downforce is a good thing

however, the heavier you are the more energy you have to dissipate while braking and it is unproporcionally bigger ammount than the bonus from brakes
by your logic you can improve Formula 1: 0-100-0 time by adding weight, so think again¨
>>
>>15571510
If you cant tell the difference between someone approaching at 70mph and 120mph, you really should take a little bit longer to look.

>>
>>15571533
F=m*a dude.

The actual power the brakes put out increases by the power of two as well with increasing speed.

Available weight based traction increases linearly with weight, cancelling out the effect of increased weight as long as the system is capable of supplying the needed power. It neither improves nor does it get noticably worse.

>>
For flat ground and ignoring air-resistance:

F_brake=m_vehicle*a_vehicle

F_brake,max=µ_tires*m_vehicle*g

Therefore

a_vehicle,max=µ_tires*g

with a being acceleration (or deceleration)
g being gravity
m being mass
F being force
µ being the coefficient of friction
>>
>>15570482
Are you autistic? Im gonna hazard a guess and say it's a safety measure in case the driver falls asleep or has a heart attack and can't stop the truck himself
>>

You can improve braking even with more weight if you add so many brakes that the weight per brake remains. And semi trucks have five axles and big ass fucking air brakes that'll stop a jumbo jet dead in its path.

Every heard of a term called "glazing"? Sometimes trucks CANNOT lock up their brakes, and when they can't the break material (the shoes) becomes smooth like glass and offers next to no friction for braking. There are alot more variables for break drums on trucks than cars, you have to remember tractor trailers are usually hauling 80,000lbs or more (if they don't run across DOT (In the US) or have an accident in which they find out they are exceeding the weight limit) that does not stop exactly on a dime. You can ask any long term trucker who knows what they're talking about to verify this and thinking trucks can decelerate just as fast as a car makes anyone look like an idiot.

Yup, absolutely.

I bought a brand new car and it has all these safety shit with lane warning and beeps if i get too close to hitting anything. Also best of all is blind spot warning.

I always checked my blind spot, still do cos i also have two old as shit cars.

Problem is the piller with airbags are SO thick, you cannot see shit, even with well set mirrors a car can easily be missed.

So i started trusting the blind spot warning more and more, when even after checking my blind spot, my system beeps and a car drives by next to me. And that has made me complacent enough to not bother looking at my blind spot anymore. Just look at the dash see if the light is on or not, or the system beeps.

Same with parking, cos my car has 360 cameras that beep if i get too close, i no longer have to have the same level of spacial awareness and knowledge of my car to do anything anymore.

Modern cars REALLY do spoil people and make them worst drivers.

I'm driving my old cars more so i can recover and stop being a shit. To be fair at least i can see out of the old cars.

Think it has more to do with the fact we spend all our money dropping $100k bombs on mud huts instead of building proper roads and maintaining them.
>>
Look at this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxe_b2GRwok [Embed]

>flimsy levers
>needs two people to open the hood
>have to be more careful than usual to not break stuff

Why is it that when newer the car, the harder it is to do things?
>>
>>15575093
Could be it, but you're way behind Russia.
They spend negative money on roads and more than they have money for on military.
>>
>>15571603
Dude, just stop. You have no clue what you're talking about. Tire coefficients of friction aren't linear. The peak longitudinal force has a nonlinear region when you get to the peak.

The reason you can't just keep packing on weight and expect the same stopping distances is because tires have something that's called load sensitivity. In other words, your "coefficient of friction" goes down with more load on the tire. Also, tires can have a coefficient of friction > 1.0

underrated post.

Whilst beating whoever pulled the handbrake on to death is probably justified...
>rear wheels lock
>managing to hit the inside of a corner and flip
It's just not that hard to keep a car straight with the back wheels locked up. There are two retards in this vid.
>>
>>15571340
>tfw your handbrake isn't this good
How did they make it lock up at that speed?
>>
So from reading this thread, negligence is a modern invention and it has never happened before because dash cams didn't exist back then.

lol, that reminds me . . .
>yesterday afternoon
>commuting home after work
>dense traffic @60-70mph (with less than 3 car lengths between most cars)
>coming down a steep hill
>cut through between the opposing side of the highway at the bottom
>see brake lights coming on
>figure theres a cop there
>see car
>subaru forester identical to the one in that video
>wtf are they thinking
>gap in the left lane traffic a few cars behind me
>think they can make it
>they gun it onto the highway
>cut across into the slow lane where there was less room
>why.jpg
>cant tell if they got hit or not since they were too far behind at that point
>>
>>15575215
FWD means no power stopping the rears from locking
probably more tightly adjusted due to never being used because "lol I just put it in park"
>>
>>15574078
Yeah exactly, he's getting ready to tune up his engine.

>the joke
>you
>>
>>15568518
the sad thing is that without a dashcam, the trucker would have been FUCKED
the rule says that as long as the front car is straight in lane (if they had enough time to do that) it's the the other guy's fault
that's because it's up to the trucker's insurance to PROVE the Nissan's fault and when each driver refuses to admit guilt it's 50/50 by default
>>
>>15569680
Yo guys can you school me on right of way, so I don't be a retard? I've never seen an intersection like this before.

It should be truck > filmer turning left > gray car, right?
>>
>>15571344
that's what you get for hiding behind truck's blind spots
>>
>>15568632
The material the pillar is made of, and also the inside structure, is much stronger than in usual cars, I'm sure. Of course that's expensive and will be visible in the price.
>>
>>15575190
Is there any logical reason why you would fucking say that post is underrated? Has anybody expressed any kind of dissatisfaction or criticism at all against it? Are you delusional? Are you reading replies that are nonexistant? Maybe you come from communities with voting systems, but there is literally no way that you could know what other people think of that post you just replied to here. Maybe it's psychological. Maybe it's your own post you're replying to, like a 12 year old fucktard liking his own facebook posts thinking his swelling autism is going unnoticed. Maybe your self esteem depends on you tricking yourself into thinking someone out there thinks your post is worth something. Or maybe you are just a retard, the worst kind of retard, the one who thinks he's smart, the one who thinks he's the only one to have gotten the joke, to have understood the post. Well, guess what, faggot, that post is by no definition underrated so why don't you do the world a favour and go check out what the bottom of your toilet smells like?
>>
>>15575258
I've had FWD cars, none had a handbrake that could lock the rear wheels at the speed he was going.
>>
>>15568632
The thickness of the pillars is due to roll over regulations requiring the car to be able to support its own weight on its roof, so to make the pillars stronger most companies just made them thicker as it spreads the weight over a larger structure, but thin pillars can be made if the pillar is more dense or made of a more exotic high strength light weight material. Hood height is also determined by pedestrian safety laws that require 3 inches of space between the top of the hood and the top of the engine/suspension, if you put the engine in the rear of the car you only need to worry about the height of the suspension, which is why the hood is so low.
