A thread to discuss about Econo-Pocket-Rockets.

>What is a "Hot Hatch"?
A Hot Hatch is a manufacturer produced, performance oriented variant of a standard hatchback, designed for improved handling, increased top speed, acceleration and generally enhance the driving experience.

>Are all Hot Hatches FWD?
No. Whilst most Hot Hatches are FWD, some are AWD or even RWD.

>Isn't FWD shit?
No. Just because you can't get the arse out by stamping on the accelerator doesn't mean you can't have fun.

>Aren't Hot Hatches just for Europoors?
No; with the launch of the Fiesta and Focus ST in the US, it seems like the Hot Hatch is beginning to take off on the other side of the Atlantic, but Europoors definitely have more choice.

>Is the Fiesta ST actually good?
The Fiesta ST is one of the best small hot hatches on offer at the minute; so yeah they're pretty good.

Kewl. These things are pretty damn slick, and I'd have got one if it weren't for the 9-5 being quicker and nimbler.
>>
>>15567349
Nice! Have you picked out a tuner you're going to use as well? And is the FSwerks Quick Shift a plate adapter or the whole shifter assembly?

The RMM is one of the best first mods you can do on the Fiesta.
>>
>>15567458
Just ashift plate adapter. I don't think I want the whole assembly based on how much shorter throw the adapters alone make it.

I have been reading reading a bunch of reviews on tuners and think I will go with tune+, but might wait until getting an IC to do so and stick with the OTS maps for now
>>
>>15567475
Nice, the shift plate adapter (I have Mountune's) was not a fun install for me. It's a pretty tight space, took me about 90 minutes.

Tume+ is my tuner and I highly recommend him. Especially if you're considering running an ethanol blend. But waiting to do the intercooler is the right idea.

I'm considering doing the X37 turbo core swap this spring, if all goes well.
>>
>>15567517
wasn't planning to do any ethanol, kind of hard to find around where I live. The FSWerks is pretty similar to mountune's but costs half as much. The install video makes it look so easy, what made it take so long?
>>
>>15567539
Just a tight working space and big hands for the most part.
>>
>>15567551
fair enough. Did you stay at 'stage 1' for a while? I'm wondering how much the stock maps will wake up the car
>>
>>15567553
I didn't bother tuning for a while, I did the RMM/QuicKShift first, then a worthless intake (Cobb), got in on presales for the MAP exhaust and intercooler, added the AP, put on an eibach rear sway bar. finally got tuned and added a bunch of piercemotorsports braces. I only used the OTS tunes for a week or so before getting tuned by Tune+.
>>
>>15567587
yeah i've read intakes do shit for anything. I really just got a panel filter for slightly more turbo noise
>>
Considering the Golf R or Scirocco R. Currently leaning towards the Scirocco, but still uncertain about transmission. I'm very hesitant about DSG but I've heard good things. Any one able to chip in with DSG experience? Is it basically like driving a clutch-less manual or what?
>>
>>15567683

looks like the marketing teams got you good.

just get a real manual. Yeah, the 0-60 isn't as fast, but it's a much better driving experience

(although I haven't driven either of the cars you are debating)

It would seem so. I just know that regardless of which trans I get, I will be second guessing my final choice for eternity. Fug.

Depends. When looking at hot hatches, I drove them all. I chose the GTI for the reasons you mentioned. I didn't want a car that screamed "teenager". I wanted a car that was fun, fast, and comfortable. The GTI fit that bill.

installed the 91 OTS map (93 is very rare in my state) and wow, the car sure wakes up. Power feels much more even across the power band, and you really notice that increased amount of torque.
>>
>>15577568
I don't know what you mean by 'easy', but like most other VWs, as long as you don't skip service and generally don't abuse the car too much, there shouldn't be a problem. DSG service can be pricey. Haldex is every 30k for $150, so that's eh.
>>
>>15578778

I daily a DSG mk5 Golf GTI and at first I was hesitant. You can drive it as a conventional automatic with a sport setting or in manual mode with control on shifts. In manual mode it will shift up rather than bashing the limiter but DSG boxes can be remapped to stop this.

IMO the DSG offers the benefits of an Auto and Manual with fewer downsides.

My personal choice would be the Golf R over the Scirocco.

I can but it'd be ~15 minutes out of the way each time I wanted gas, and that's one of only ~15 stations in my metro area of 2.5 million, so if I'm not nearby and need gas then I'd be mixing back in 91. I'm not really into the idea of adding inconvenience to my life, so I was just planning to stick to what I can get.
>>
>>15582087
Not something you always have to run, but the car is pretty sleepy on 91 Octane still. If you ever feel inspired and have a half tank or less, just put in 2.5-3 gallons of E85 and top off the rest with 91. It's not something you always have to run either, you'd be fine filling up with regular 91 at any time after adding in the ethanol.

You'll definitely notice some more power and doesn't have any negative effects on the vehicle (other than slightly worse gas mileage).
>>
>>15580080
so what better choices for hot hatches do i have around the $10,000 in US? All I've seen is the MK6 GTI with ~100,000 miles. Having driven the GTI, I didn't really like how boring it felt. Sure its fast, but to me it lacks character like the abarth or fist. having said that, the fist would be a nice option but the cheapest i've seen them for is ~$15k, which is 50% more than what i was looking to spend.

Why drive these pieces of shit?
>>

They sound like sex on wheels but I can't imagine actually driving one of them for any extended period of time. I'd rent one for a week on vacation thats it desu
>>
hey, does anyone know if I can remove the top timing belt cover on my focus svt? I have a chilton manual now and it seems like there isn't a quick way to just CHECK if the timing belt is newer or an old & busted, ready to break piece of shit

but yeah, there is no rust in the floorpan of mine.

i ended up having the tranny rebuilt with a diesel 5th gear.

oh my god the stock gearing of these cars sucks balls.
>>
>>15582913
Not straight E85, but it sees some nice power gains over 91 when you blend in a few gallons for a e25 mix or so.

1.8T and better suspension maybe. the Fiesta is 1.6 so I can't see them going below that if they want to compete, plus the civic is a bigger car.

is there more than just ford in this market for all of NA? as far as stock models go

Honda has a few fun models, I think.
Hyundai has the Veloster Turbo, but that's pretty mediocre compared to its competition.

And there's always

are used volks cheaper post-scandal?

colleague of mine rented a brand new jetta literally one week before the news came out and says that people get his car for like 80 bucks less a month now. poor guy
>>
>>15583600
GTI, veloster turbo, chevy spark 2LT (lol), used mazdaspeed3s, used WRX hatches (why did they kill the hatch ;_;)

maybe missed a few others.

>Tfw all we get is the Clarity with it's trying-hard-to-be-modern styling

Fuck your perceived futurism, Honda. I want a god damn electric Civic.
>>
>>15583632
VWs should be cheaper than before, even though the scandal never affected the GTIs (or any of the non-diesel versions for that matter).
>>
>>15583649
hm, thanks for the tips. fiesta it is. hopefully ST if I can afford it.
>>
>>15583638
also forgot the mini cooper, though I think they are overpriced for what you get
>>
>>15583669
a completely base model ST can be had for around 20k new after tax. Add 2-2.5k for recaro seats. Used FiSTs are harder to come by, and in my area always listed overpriced
>>
>>15583693
>>15583693
I'm going to sound like a clueless cunt, but is this an irresponsible choice for a first car? or should I get something slow and easy to handle first?
>>
>>15583711
how old are you? It's a 200HP FWD car which means it's very easy to handle. Mustangs are much more dangerous. It's even slower from 0-60 than a few small SUVs out there.

If you're a dumb teenager you'll probably do dumb things whether in a fiesta ST or a 10 year old civic.
>>
>>15583748
I'm 24 with a decent paying job. Never felt the need to own a car because I could bike to work and shit. I'm pretty sure I can afford a new Fiesta ST if I stick to the 20% rule but it's hard to justify spending that much. Insurance costs shouldn't fuck me over too hard, which is a plus.

also, why the recaro seats? are the stock ones so terrible that they have to be replaced?
>>
>>15583791
The Recaro seats are worth their price, that's really all there is to it. They're genuinely 2k better.
>>
>>15583791
the stock seats are pretty bad. The recaros are pretty godlike. Honestly, some of the best seats this side of $40k. You'll have to sit in them yourself to see. They hug pretty tight and keep you in place which I enjoy while driving, but if you're a bigger guy they may be too small foryou. That option also includes heated seats which is nice for the winter
>>
>>15583823
I can get behind that. the kind of luxury you'd never consider until you tried it. then you can't do without. perhaps it's for the best if I stay away.

>but if you're a bigger guy they may be too small foryou.
although it doesn't look like I have a choice

Insurance on the Fiesta is pretty cheap, since they see it as 'just a Fiesta' and not some hyped-up version. Stock you should have no issues at all, and quite a bit of fun.

If you need any tips for negotiating or questions about a price feel free to ask here, will try to help or give insight where I can.
