Try to talk him into one of the leather ones you stitch on. The cheap ones are around $20.

I have them on both my cars, but they honestly take like 3 hours to stitch on, and almost impossible to do it in the car.

I just go to my parents house, remove the wheel, and have my mom stitch it on. She's sews good.
