Just sounds raspy to me, at least on the r32. I've heard a few with cut resonators and I didn't like it. I can see the appeal because it is very loud, but I personally prefer stock. This is on the stock exhaust though. I do prefer some non-res aftermarkets like milltek.

OP, in very similar boat to you I too had an 97' 850 R (FWD) but it cracked its block, I ended borrowing money from my parents and getting a GTI not a base model Golf.
