I have a 2003 Chevy Cavalier Sport Coupe w/ 94k miles, and at highway speeds I can feel a bumping through my steering wheel like the road wheels are being jostled about. At about 75mph the shaking starts to come through even the upper dashboard so I usually don't surpass that speed. What could be the problem?

>>

Jokes aside just drain it a little and check the oil level. Repeat until you aren't above F anymore.

Too much oil creates too much pressure and can seriously damage your engine. Don't drive until you've done this.

Thoughts on getting a 120k 04 Mitsubishi lancer ralliart? Would be first car, having a mechanic look at it soon, all I know for now is that the A/C is fucked. Decently clean looking car though
>>
I've never done any actual mechanical work on a car in my life, but I recently bought an NA Miata with 134k on the clock and want to start everything pretty fre$h so I know where it's at maintenance-wise. I asked my father to help me out with it and he said he thinks it's a bad idea because I'm "not a mechanic" and "the guys down the street will change your oil and check everything for about $30." He's also concerned about the initial investment because I need a jack, jack stands, torque wrench, appropriate oils, etc. I tried to explain to him it's about the experience and the initial investment wasn't a big deal to me.

This turned into a weird rant, but am I getting in over my head for someone who's never done this stuff before? There's so many detailed guides on the internet for NA Miatas I think messing up would be something I'd have to try to do.
>>
>>15534540
Unbalanced tires? Low tire pressure? Seems like anytime I have this stuff happen its a tire issue. Worst case my rumbleing was once bacause a spark plug boot came loose and there was misfire.

Are second-gen Tundras overvalued in the same way second-gen Tacomas are? I flipped my 2006 5-speed Tacoma for well over KBB/NADA and was surprised to get that, and now I'm looking at getting a 2008 Tundra from a friend.

Are they overvalued to where giving him KBB/NADA would give me room for profit when I go to sell in ~1 year?
>>
>>15534741
That was my guess too (about the tires), considering I felt it starting in the steering wheel and not in my seat. I'll check the tire pressure. If that's ok then I'll ask my mechanic about the tire balance. Thanks anon.
>>
>>15532969
If CTS-V and Z06 have overheating issues, why are they still allowing them to sell it even though it's a potential death-mobile?
>>
>>15534760
GM claims that the automatics only overheat during track usage in hot environments. Most Z06s and Vs rarely see track use. I believe the 2017 Z06 is getting a radiator upgrade over the radiator used in the Z51/old Z06.
>>
>>15534662
My first car was a 99 Miata and with no knowledge, I did a fine job of changing all the fluids and filters. Only thing I can remember being problematic was doing the fuel filter, which I went into under prepared and spilled a decent amount of gas onto myself in the process.

The other option would be a virago they've been making those type bikes since before most of 4chan users were born.

Why would you want a 250cc cruisers? most 600cc+ cruisers aren't that much more powerful.

Forgot to mention that I'm Fr, so EU cars.
So far for DCT I have found
Renault, Alfa, VW Group, BMW M, and it seems Merc AMG.
But most of the time they just put "Auto" in the info, without precision.
>>
>>15540825
Wikipedia would probably help narrow it down.

Typically DCT's won't come anything but the sport models of cars.

However to my knowledge I wasn't familiar with any Mercedes model having DCT, other than their halo cars.

They typically employ torque converter DSG style transmisions.

cvt - constant velocity trans - can not handle much power - only used for fuel economy

One is pump out of the ground and cracked until you get the Oil.

The other is made in a chemical factory.
>>
>>15543877
Chemically, the base of synthetic oil is made from precipitates of natural gas rather than distillates of crude oil. It lubricates better because the hydrocarbon chains in it's molecular structure don't break down under temperature and pressure as easily.
In use, it will lubricate better and last longer, but won't flush contaminates out as well as regular or synthetic blend oil. Also, it will find places to leak out of where regular oil won't.
>>
>>15543610
it's an absolute waste of money on a stock engine. if you're building a turbo charged engine then wrapping the exhaust may help a bit
>>
>>15543930
>>15543933
>>15543877

synthetic is man made (usually a superior product) and non-synthetic (crude) is pumped out of the ground BUT since the term synthetic has no legal definition in the US, most oils sold as synthetic are a crude oil base with some synthetic additives thrown in. Take a carefull look at oil bottles and you will usually see "only for sale in US" because the rest of the world has a legal definition for the term synthetic that those bottles don't meet and cant be sold as synthetic.

Don't worry about it.

Just make sure you don't skimp on something that could save your life (for instance, jack stands).

Also, for quick stuff like oil changes and whatnot, vehicle ramps are usually easier than a jack and jack stands, and are just as safe.

No. Tacomas and 4runners are overvalued because muh offroader.

If anything, Tundras are under-valued. Same engine as the 4runner, same basic drivetrain, but people don't like them because they're 1) kinda ugly, and 2) not American.

Don't buy a Tundra to flip it, you won't make much money unless there's something seriously wrong with it.

I've got a 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL 149,500 miles.

Right now it idles roughly and doesn't go above 3000 RPM without squealing. I don't think all the cylinders are firing. Blue and white smoke are coming from the tailpipe. I don't think its burning coolant as the coolant levels seem fine. It also shifts roughly, from any gear. I'm thinking this might an the vacuum modulator on the trans? Or some kind of vacuum issue?

It was sitting for a good while (3 years I think) and I plan on doing a tune up anyway. I don't see any leaks on the headgaskets or underneath the car.

If I have to take the heads off to replace valve seals, should I replace the timing chain, tensioners, and head gaskets?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really want to keep this car.

Real quick, guys.

I changed the oil and filter on my car for the first time a few months ago, and I've been noticing something strange.

Before the change the car ran fine, after the change the car has been overheating like mad. It runs fine for 30 minutes and then afterwards the heat begins to build.

Is it the oil? I think it's because it's running thin when it gets too hot. This all happened after the oil change. Fans run fine, I put fresh coolant in, changed the radiator cap, checked the system for leaks, and nothing.

1995 Toyota Camry LE. 4 cylinder, 2.2 litres, 108,947 miles.

Oil has very little to do with cooling.

Check your coolant level and top it off, and then check your fan clutch, just becuase the fan is rotating doesn't mean its working properly.

Buddy of mine was moving out of the country and was trying to get rid of a 4th gen Pontiac firebird he bought then put in storage for a couple of years until he could do something with it. Gave me the keys and title and told me it was mine to with as I please, he was probably going to end up junking it anyway. I looked at the title, and it has the previous owner's name and the registration expired under him from like 2014. The seller's portion is filled out on the back, but the buyer's portion wasn't filled out, so I have no idea if my buddy selling the car to me is legal. He's already gone, so he can't really go to the DMV and get a new title for it, so is my only option to just fill my name in as the buyer and tell the DMV I had it in storage the last 2 years? I live in Delaware, and there's no official form needed to notify a bill of sale, but you need some type of bill of sale for it

In a used car, how big of a deal is a rusty undercarriage?
I'm looking at a used Accord with a little over 100k miles on it, and the calipers were mostly clean in the front, but really rusty in the back, and the rotors are really rusty too, so that tipped me off. Under the car, it's pretty rusted. Not to the extent of being gross, but there was a thin layer of brownish red over a fair amount of it.

I live in New England, so there's bound to be snowy roads every year, and I don't have a garage to park in yet, so I'm wondering if I should just walk away since it will probably get more rusted, or if rust isn't really a big deal.

tried looking into that. the city doesn't pay for it anymore. some local lawyer says they can help file something, but most of their cases get rejected. other local news saying city is a cunt and doesn't pay. chasing after them would likely waste as much time and money as just getting a new wheel myself.

at least 3 people in front of me hit the hole too, none of them attempted to avoid it (1/3 of the lane, no where to swerve). one day later it was partially filled with tar, few days later and the highway section was blocked off for repair at night, so they definitely knew about it

Unless your car is air-cooled it it's a minor part of cooling the engine overall and in and of itself will not cause overheating of the engine if low.

For fuel efficiency, small turbocharged in most cases.
For the driving experience, I'd say the bigger NA because of better sound and better throttle response (unless you love turbo sounds and don't mind turbo lag).
>>
>>15559899
Could of gone and checked it yourself if you were seriously considering it. Just go there, write down the vin, and remember the make and year of the car. Then post in a vin check thread here.
>>
Whats the point of the bottom of the nose cone having that bit that sits vertical? Ive seen "Sports" bumpers/cones with similar things on them
>>

I have a feeling if the guy didn't wanna provide a VIN then hes done something bad or doesn't wanna reveal the car history or some shit

Is it just me or does that CTS-V in the picture look like its made out of plastic?
>>

my car start quickly when cold
but takes way more time when hot
it's fuel injected
i have a CEL because of the EGR valve could that be the reason ?
>>

Should I do it? Thinking about offering $500. Could be really easy or really hard to fix.

Probably, but going there, looking at the car, and checking the vin yourself wpuld eliminate most of those possibilities. If youre a first time buyer, you might not know/be able to check stuff like exhaust, cat converters etc. But thats why you ask in these threads. "Hey it looks like this guy literally put a soda can for his exhaust, thats not legal right?"
But that is a decent bit of effort, only worth it if you really like and want the car IMO
>>

I have a 2014 civic EX-L

Is there any advantage what so ever to using higher octane than regular?
>>
>>15560797
that looks like it needs a lot of work for 500

have you seen it yet? does it even run? does it make any knocks and shit?

Really sounds like you're gonna blow a lot more than 500 dollars into it.
>>
>>15561383
also with that the transmission and clutch are probably fucked and who knows have the fluids been changed at all?
>>

having a hard time getting flared metal brake line nuts loose?
Pour brake fluid on them (like a capful)
wait for it to penetrate the threads
and wa la, loose nuts!
>paying it forward
>>
>>15561739
pretty neat but I already have a can of PB blaster and shit

should I put lock-tite on my brake nuts when I go to put them back on?
>>
>>15561800
>should I loc-tite that shit?
not if you want to remove them without stripping the bolt.
>just did it dry at first, started rounding the bolt, then did the brake fluid trick, got them off without more rounding
the fitting threads are so small that there's no way they'll back out under normal operating conditions, they don't need extra help to stay stuck
>just hand tighten

What's the best way to learn about cars? I'm on my first car (2000 Grand Marquis) and am pretty smart and handy, and know more than a normalfag, but I still don't know all that much. Is there like a book or something that can give me a decent head start?

I'll keep reading and watching and hopefully I'm adept someday. Thanks anon.

Should I buy the nissan sentra 2013 or 2007? The price tags around here for each one in average are around 7k and 3k dollars respectively, used. I'm interested in fuel economy, how long they'll last and to have as less problems as possible. I live in a city and am a student. Is there any detail I should know of these cars? thanks
>>
I've been looking at a 2003 audi tt that's for sale locally for $3500, seller says all it needs is a clutch plate which my dad and I could do the work on, this would be my first car would it be a good buy?

>inb4 underage
The only reason I haven't jumped on this is because I've got so much student debt it's hard to justify a car that could potential be a huge money pit
>>
What are some questions that I need to ask before deciding if a car's worth going to look at?
It's an '86 Supra for $600, and the ad doesn't give very many details what so ever. But I haven't seen any Supras this cheap, even just rolling shells are over $1k here. I'd just go look at it, but it's a 2 hour drive, and not having a vehicle at the moment to get there (both bikes are unavailable to ride), I'd have to ask someone to go up with me.

>Inb4 Poopra
I like the way it looks, not like I'm taking it to the track or anything like that. I just want a fun daily ride that I can get a bit hektik with on occasion, and figured a cheap Mk.III like this would be perfect for that, and to work on as a project.

What's a reliable hatchback I can find on the cheap?

Want to pick up a shitbox for DD.
>>
>>15563381
Geo Metro, Toyota Yaris, Chevrolet Spark, Honda Fit(my best choice).
>>
>>15563402

Ok when I said cheap I meant like $1.5-2k (and yes I accept they won't be very reliable, but trying to find the most reliable one I guess)

I like the Fit, but yeah can't afford it.
>>
>>15563445
Well in that range a Geo Metro is the best choice to go for.

0% chance. I've done it many times as a buyer and seller; I used to put "ask for _____" in the Craigslist ads when I'd sell a car to avoid titling it and the buyer never had an issue.

>>
>>15554601
here on the east coast any amount of rust is bad news, my dad taught me to bring a large flathead screwdriver and a hammer and try and punch a hole through the frame, if you can then the car would have been undrivable by the next spring, if the frame is solid you make sure to undercoat the hell out of it if you need it to last. If you do put a hole through it then get the fuck out of there fast

>>15542284
Everything on the car will disintegrate before you ever have problems with a Mercedes engine, let alone an AMG.
>>
>>15564540

You might have fried the actual lighter port (whatever it's called). They're usually cheap to replace and depending on the car easy to get in and out.

>>15564613
Thank you for the input, anon. Will try to get it replaced and see if it works again.

My Registration is getting suspended on the 25th of this month, and I am moving out of state on the 12th.

Am I still supposed to pay for new registration and insurance even if I just submitted a form for moving out of state?

If subies get their unique exhaust note from uneven headers, will having uneven lengths on a straight pipe axle back cause any difference in sound? I'm meaning I have an inline 4 single pipe exhaust that splits to duals behind the axle, if one of those pipes after the split was longer/shorter than the other would it cause any sort of exhaust note modification (if there is no mufflers in the system)?

Anyone know of problems or can make a recommendation for a 2007 Volvo XC70 or something else AWD? In toronto there's very few and my boss is selling his which goes for about $5000-$6000 on kijiji and autotrader.

Also can anyone attest to the reliability of the Haldex AWD system?
