They're still around and competition is more fierce due to china being copycats and OEM units getting better. Car manufacturers were slow to get aboard the train, but it seems they now know that premium car audio can be a profitable car option.

As OEM audio continues to evolve, more and more people are satisfied with OEM premium version headunits and speakers. So they don't feel a need to buy 3rd party gear especially since that gear doesn't fit int he dash very well or integrates control of the car subsystems on the touchscreen. Whether this causes some head unit makers to reduce the variety and number of offerings is another matter.

In the pictured car, you will see that both driver and front passenger have their own touchscreens mounted in the door.

Fry's does installs too. This past week I even saw a boat inside their tallest service bay. It was getting fitted with all kinds of audio systems. Of course, the money was all the company's to begin with, so they are out only the amount that amazon or alibaba skimmed off the top.

Not much if you use drok 2.0 unmatched stereo amps. You are using 4.1 or 6.1 in a car and not 2.0. Even most simple home PC audio setups are 2.1.

Not little 2.0 unmatched amps on a tiny circuit board and undersized heat sink. When cold, drok may be ok, but as it gets hot, clipping occurs as the IC limits power despite the user cranking the pot full open. Overdriving the IC.

You remind me of the amateur radio operators (HAMs) that run QRP rigs instead of the elaborate commercial items or large scale homebrew receiver/amp projects from ARRL publications.

Unfortunately, those days are mostly gone. I've also stopped QRP and "fox" hunting.

I have a special surround sound alcove in my home and largescreen. While the commercial units have plenty of bass, I have one 15-inch sealed port subwoofer (damn a huge cabinet) just for the low frequency air movement type bass effects (cutoff 48 hz). It's not used so much, but when it is, the visceral effect is quite good. A lot of visitors don't suspect it as it serves as an end table. It definitely sounds better than the movie theatre but I still miss having a crowd around me for opening day enthusiasm.

Some people do watch movies in their cars. The enclosed area allows more audio experimentation and volume than a home might allow. One neighbor complained about my movie volume since I have so many windows the sound leaks out. She's an old biddy and always looking for something to complain about though.

The interior of the Chevrolet Malibu has a lot of blue reflected light on the dash and even on the doors. GM found out that the bluish light improves mental awakeness if the driver is fatigued. So I guess the malibu is their experiment to see if it works for them or not. NO getting away from lights in that car. At night, there's enough "disco light" (your words not mine) to make the driver's face visible to other cars.
