Mercedes seems to think it is though. When you compare it to the others (BMW 5, Audi A6, Volvo V90) the merc is insanely expensive. For a decently equiped one with a meager 190hp diesel (best seller in yurop) you're looking at at least 60-65k€.

In the 1980's currency exchange rates meant that if you went to Germany, bought a Benz, and privately imported it to America, it was a good $10,000 cheaper than buying the exact same model from an American Mercedes Dealer. In 1984 and 1985 there were more Benz's privately imported than Mercedes themselves imported for the dealers. So instead of lowering their US market prices to a reasonable number, Mercedes lobbied HARD for 3 years and got the 25 year law passed to protect their profits.
