How good are the 944 series from Porsche during the 80s?
I've found a guy who wants to sell me his 1986 944. It's in excellent condition for it's age and from what it felt like when I drove it, handles and sounds amazing.
I've just never really gotten into Porsche's before so I dont know what to expect. It's got the manual 2.5l inline four in it.
Expect shit to break often.
As long as you have a reliable daily and about 1k ready for repairs at any and all times, you should be alright. They're generally not reliable enough to be a daily, but they're great when they work.
Good enough that in this poor area a lot of people are able to maintain them and drive them.
Why have 99 problems when you can have 944 of them?
944s are well known for having mechanical issues, but apparently not enough that poor motherfuckers don't still own them en masse. If you're willing to learn how to take care of it and/or know a mechanic who works on them well, it will be a nice car.

It's the poor man's Porsche in the sense that after a couple years of ownership you actually become poor.
Engine has about 55k on it, but the guy just replaced the alternator, starter, timing belt, water pump, and put brand new tires on it.
He want $3k for it. It's at am age where it doesn't need a sticker to be roadworthy in my state, but he got one from a reputable mechanic and is willing to let me bring it to mine if I want too.

Full disclosure: My first car was a same-platform 924. An automatic 924, at that. So might be biased, but I honestly had more fun in stick-axle Mustang II's and FB RX7's that I bought later in life, than in that 924. Largely because both of those cars actually were reliable.

I was under the impression that the 924's were rather sturdy., at least the 2.0 ones.

Every time i see one of these for sale it always comes with a list of recently replaced parts. Judging by their reputation, they probably break down a lot.

Those 2.0's tend to be stout... in other cars. I don't know if they put a different tune/cam on them for the Porsche or what, but in the 924 they're nothing but trouble.
Mine had an allegedly blown head gasket when I got it, which turned out to be a cracked head. I put a new head on it, but it had a blown head gasket by the time I got rid of it. The valvetrain was clattery the whole time I owned it, no matter how often I adjusted the lash. I didn't end up throwing a rod but I have seen plenty with holes through the block at LeMons races on the west coast. Most of my day-to-day issues were with the K-Jetronic, the mechanical advance in the distrbutor, and the body accessories/wiring, though, not the mechanical innards.
