Most of the OEM shift knobs I've handled have been surprisingly heavy. From the standpoint of physics, yes it should make a difference, especially to counteract the effect of a short-throw shifter.

I think aftermarket shifters mostly look like garbage. Or maybe I've only seen garbage ones.
