SJCAM SJ5000+ if you want to spend a few more bux for a camera that takes bretty good videos.

ride around in an empty parking lot for a while first so both of you can get used to riding 2-up

tell her (him?) to hold onto you and ALWAYS lean with you -- if he (she?) suddenly moves or sits up when you're doing a maneuver it will cause the bike to not handle properly and you may drop it or run wide in a corner

tell them to either move with you or don't move at all, jack up the preload a few notches obviously and remember that the person on the back is a wobbling moving shifting weight in the first place and some simple things like low speed control will be trickier simply because of that somewhat destabilizing influence.

UK Rider (21) on an A2 restricted license. (Full license, just restricted to 47hp)
Looking to go to Florida next year and wish to hire a bike for the week or so I go for.

What sort of bike will I be restricted to?
How hard will it be to get insurance?

so ever since i got my klr650 ive been learning offroad stuff and about a month ago i saw some enduro riding and started watching. i quickly learned how to get the front end up without adding much speed to hop logs on my klr. a week or two ago i started watching moto-trials and fell in love.
ive learned how to stand on a dead stop without dabbing on my klr650 for about 5 seconds in about a half hour of practice, and i can go in a straight line at half idle speed (i dont know the speed, but its slower than 2mph) for easily 100 feet, and now know i want a trials bike. but ive got some issues.
1. im poor, i cant afford 7500 for a new bike
2. i cand find any used (the best ive found 1 on cl from 30 years ago and the last 30-year-old bike i got died in about 5 months)
3. ive got no where to ride. i live on an acre and a half of land so i could probably set up some big logs, cement blocks, etc and make a small course

so here is where this is going
can i build a small dirt bike into a trials bike?
the vintage trials bike look like they were ust regular dirtbikes fitted with minimalistic seats and smaller tanks, and just cut back.

>tldr
>buy klr650
>learn offroad stuff
>learn about trials
>practice what i can on klr
>want real trials bike
>cant afford new, cant find used
>can i build one from dirtbike?

Why are motorcycles such fucking scams? How are consumers still putting up with all this bullshit?

Daily reminder that "break in" periods are complete scams designed to cut production costs. Any modern vehicle is broken in during the production phase before sale

Daily reminder that a "600 mile service" is a complete fucking scam that should be handled during the production phase. When is the last time you saw someone buy a car new and take it back for a "600 mile service"?

Daily reminder that all these meme replacement components in motorcycles (failed rear wheel bearing, failed cam chain tensioner, etc...) are intentional and designed to keep fucking the consumer.

I've had a SJ4000 for over a year but I'd go for the SJ5000+ if I was gonna buy another helmet cam today, it has a great sensor and chipset and will do 1080p at true 60fps -- the SJ4000 does 1080p30 and uses "fake 60fps" for its 720p60 mode so you might as well just use 720p30 instead.

The 5000+ has a better chipset and sensor than the 5000x elite but the elite has 4k and gyro stabilization. The 5000+ is much better in low light if that matters to you. I'm not sure how much smoother the videos of the 5000x would be on a motorcycle due to the gyro stabilization, it might make a lot of difference or it might be a minimal improvement.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GH-3BBrsqvE
>>
>>15473254
Also, the 5000+ can only use up to 32GB memory cards while the 5000x elite can use larger cards.

looks like the SJ5000X gyro stabilization makes a good bit of difference in this video

Started riding with in-ear earbuds with music and podcasts on my commute. I'm impressed by how I now shift better than before: I focus more on the feeling - tactile feedback - between my legs rather than sound of the engine which I never put much trust in anyway. I'm also one of those drivers who operates better with audio, and today I proved it applies to bikes as well, I overtook better and split lanes at the only red light I encountered.

Monday 11th I was scheduled for vehicle inspection, dead battery fucked me. Sometime after it did it again, and third time, I suspect a parasite load so I left the battery charged, disconnected from everything, put it in the bike in the morning and FART no ignition, and I can't make my mechanic appointment; where I hoped he'd ID the parasite.

New battery new life.

You don't want to buy someone's half baked, poorly executed project, true. Most dual sport bikes that get modded are just getting quality aftermarket parts bolted onto them.

My DR650 came with protaper bars, corbin seat, bash plate, side case armor, lower & wider footpegs, luggage rack and panniers, stiffer spring on rear suspension, air box mod, aftermarket air filter, it was re jetted to match the improved airflow, seal savers, fork brace, etc.. The guy I bought it from had all the stock parts he took off / replaced in a box along with extra oil, oil filters, a couple of extra tires, service manual, and other shit that he gave me with the bike. Pretty much all the mods he had done to the bike are things that I would've eventually done myself, and looking at the MSRP of the shit he put on the bike there is well over $1500 worth of quality aftermarket parts bolted onto the bike. It saved me the time and money of having to put that shit on there myself.

When we talk about "not buying someone else's project" we mean don't buy someone's CB that they did a shitty job of converting to a "cafe racer", don't buy someone's bobber project, don't buy ANYTHING where the previous owner tried to modify the frame or subframe of the bike.

A dual sport with a lot of quality aftermarket parts that have been bolted on is just fine and will likely save you time and money because a lot of that shit is stuff you'll need / want anyway.

I have a lot of protected right or left turns on my route to work, like a sweeper or u turn under an overpass onto a feeder road or whatever, and sometimes people don't know they're protected and stop to yield to oncoming traffic even though we have our own lane with a solid white line for a good hundred feed after the turn. Is it rude to beep at them / go around? I don't want to be the motorcycle between one dumbass who stopped unnecessarily and another dumbass who assumed everyone kept moving through the turn.

This happens to me at least once a week and I usually beep once or twice when I see them stopping or just go around.

I don't normally ride around people in that situation unless I feel like I really need to for safety. I usually try to keep my bike positioned where I have an emergency exit path to one side or the other of the car in front of me just in case I need to get out of the way of someone coming up behind me. Just do whatever you think you need to do to stay safe.
>>
>>15474159
The first thing that comes to my mind is that it's too vague a question to answer.
>>
>>15474159
Bikes are a lot more fun but have much less utility.

Just want to get out of the house and drive / ride around for a while? I'd rather take the bike

Going grocery shopping? I'd rather take the car

Going over to a friend's house to hang out? I'd rather take the bike

Dropping off someone at the airport? The car is the only feasible option

Others have already said to tell your pillion to lean with the bike. Make sure you shift as smooth as you can, ride that rear break even more than normal at slow speed for stability, you often might need to be a gear lower than usual. Relax and breath, it'll seem strange and unwieldy at first but you'll get used to it.
I once picked my brother up from the airport on my CB1100, he was wearing a big backpackers backpack that weighed about 22kg, he said every time I accelerated away from a stop it felt like it was trying to pull him down and off the back of the bike. That was probably a bad idea.

Couldn't get my bike back without paying so I gave them the money and did a burnout right outside their store shooting a bunch of smoke inside.

Yeah it's a very interesting family of bikes. What you said is completely true. I've been riding around with the valve head leak for a while now because of the mess you've gotta make to reach it. Temp gauge is starting to act up so it's time to have a proper look. Also the idle is weak, god knows how far out I've turned out the idle screw just to reach 1250rpm.

Tell me about the Vulcan 500, is it really that much like the LTD ? I've read about them a lot, but never talked to an owner. Does it also not like going below 4k RPM (except in 1st) ? Also how's the top end ? 7k - 9.5k RPM are like you're on a different bike.

On a side note, ALWAYS double check that the O-rings on the coolant pipes that go into the valve head are seated properly, or you'll be up for another round of wrenching and buying coolant. Just when you think all is finally done and you can take her out for a test spin it's all gonna piss out straight from the valvehead. Those are some hard wrenching lessons right there, hahahaha.

I brought my own tire. The receipt only says 100+ for labour.

I didn't have the tools, I would have bought them if I'd known it was going to be 110. Main reason I didn't was because the quote was lower than I could buy the tools for (about 55).

Just looked and they have a 2 star average review on google with a bunch of other people saying the same thing.

Oh well yeah id be pissed too, thats a $50 job and thats over paying for it.

Take it to consumer affairs then, you were quoted less then they would not give you your bike until you paid their new price.
thats illegal believe it or not.
>>
>>15474884
Their pay is a one time thing. Those tools will more or less be divided over the amount of times you change your own tires. Surely you'll be burning through some more rubber in the future, so you may want to reconsider.

The Vulcan 500 is a pretty good bike, it has pretty impressive cornering ability for a cruiser styled motorcycle. I haven't had any issues with running at lower rpms in higher gears. You're right that the engine really wakes up when you push it into the higher RPM range. I bought it from my cousin for $500, she had let it sit unused for 6 years in her parents garage... The gas tank had started to rust a bit on the inside so I had to deal with that and the low speed circuit of the carbs was completely clogged. I cleaned them out the best I could but I never have got it to cold start or idle very good until it warms up... I'm getting ready to sell it so I'll have to get that sorted beforehand.

A bolt holding the starter clutch on the back of the alternator came loose one day while I was riding (it was supposed to have loctite on it from the factory but none of the 3 bolts did, the other 2 were completely loose as well) and ground into the starter sprocket and crankcase and dumped a bunch of steel shavings into the engine. I shut it off before it did any damage and had to completely take the engine apart and rinse all the shavings out with diesel and then rebuild it. I've put 6k miles on it since then and it's been fine. The rubber on the turn signal stalks has rotted with age so I've also got to replace the turn signals (I just ordered some cheap Chinese turn signals that looked similar off ebay, they'll be good enough to get it sold at least).

It was a great first bike and taught me A LOT about working on bikes what with the engine rebuild and all, I just don't really ride it anymore since I got a DR650 a couple years ago.

Is the dr650 a fun bike?

Spray it down with a degreaser like simple green, let it sit for a bit, and use a long bristled brush to scrub and break the oil up. Rinse it off and repeat until it's mostly clean.
>>
>>15474984
Would wd-40 work? It's a de-greaser, right?

Holy shit man, they charged you $110 just to mount and balance a tire on a wheel that you brought in yourself?

Local dealer around here charges $75 for tire change if you just bring the bike in, $25 if you bring the wheel in.

>>15474988
No, WD40 will just make a mess, just go buy a big jug of simple green or greased lightning, or something similar + a spray bottle in the cleaning section of Home Depot. Mix it 50/50 with water and spray the bike down.
>>
You cunts all get jewed good.

I can buy tyres separately and take them in or buy them at the shop and it only has every cost me about an extra 30 dollarydoos by just taking the bike to the shop and letting them do it.

Sure, it's a good, fun first bike. You can find some in good condition for pretty cheap on craigslist and they're a really simple bike to maintain so it's a good bike to learn how to wrench on.

>>15475007
Eh, I went on a 3k mile trip with my DR650 with no wind screen and it was okay. Holding 75mph for hours on end on the interstate sucked at times but I tried to stay on secondary highways / roads as much as possible.

nono i was saying thats what going slow is on a dirt bike.

In this day and age the only reason to get a trial bike is you want to get into endurocross to improve your trail riding.

Mmm, sounds like they're very similar indeed. Mine was 350 euro's with roughly the same story, plus the guy fucked up the exhausts and used water without anti anti-freeze, clogging up all of the cooling system.

Crazy about those bolts just coming off and actually causing something that serious, that's damn unlucky, but what's crazier is that DR650. That's a funny coincidence, my stepdad bought a DR800 a while ago, was in pretty bad shape. The cilinder head had to be taken off after the cam chain tensioner gave out during the last owner's ride. Really did a number on the engine. I've been riding for exactly a year when I took it out last week after it's 'done' (it's smoking from the engine, most likely burning oil). Got my length working out for me but that thing was something else alright. When you get it going it's really comfortable and doesn't lack in power. It'll probably be up for sale in a while but after the LTD I will certainly be looking for something like a dual sport (KLR, Africa twin, transalp?) after trying it out, just to stay on that sweet spot between sporty and comfortable. The LTD is not very cruiser-like that way, wouldn't see myself on a litre v-twin as a next ride.

Anyway enjoy both the bikes, they're a ton of fun. Safe miles

what tyre is that?

Q3 and yes but the road was damp in the shadows and they had only been on the bike a day so I didn't go too hardcore.

Don't really have anything much to report about them, they're incredibly, incredibly neutral. My old S20 evos had an insane turn in, they barely wanted to go straight, these feel really really stable in comparison. Just...neutral I guess.

I'm gonna go back when all the good tighter corners are dry and I'll get a better impression of what the grip is like further over.
